1. Just wondering if anyone has tried potting the exposed sections of instrument cable (ie. inside the jack) in wax to further reduce noise, microphonics etc. If it works for PUPs then it might be worth a shot.
2. VMJ's are great basses for few £s.
3. I've noticed a dip in quality over the last few years. I'm still playing a TW1000CE 12string that's years old and it puts a lot of the new models to shame. Two lads who come to a local jam night both use different models from the Evolution Exotic range. When that range came out they were priced at around £500 - £600 and both had crappy electronics and a dodgy output jack. Their higher end instruments don't come close to similarly priced guitars from the likes of Taylor, Martin, Ibanez and Freshman (if you can find one).
4. Never leave home without it. I use it to keep the Chromes from going too dull and to keep the rounds as bright as possible for as long as possible. The only content listed is White Mineral Oil so its a refined Hydrocarbon. That could mean anything from laxative fluid to the fluid found in electrical heaters.
5.
I am really dubious when people compare the the sound of one cab to another without a/bing within a full band setting. In reality that is impossible therefore most comparisons are on the unreliable side of subjective.
Sorry lad but that's utter nonsense. I play in a few bands and do a Hell of a lot of dep work. I know damn well when a cab will work in a given situation just by listening to it, as would a lot of other members.
6. They're both great amps. I'd suggest the HA because of its versatility but having said that I haven't touched my HA since I picked up the LH500. It just nailed the sound I was looking for right out of the box. The fan didn't really bother me in recording situations BTW so I wouldn't really worry about it.
7.
I think we're all missing the point here. With a Terror head and SP cab it looks the bollox! I'm a bit OCD when it comes to non matching heads and cabs
I'm a bit CDO about alphabetical order...... Anyhu, Been trying the Terror and the SP210 and it just ain't for me. Would be great for Classic Rock and the like but I'm too stuck in my ways so it's back to Hartke I go.........for now!
8.
Just me, or does anyone else have problems with using the 'quote' option ( no longer lets me) and incredible lag when t.................yp...ing a reply?
Switch the editing mode (top left of the reply box) and you'll have no problems.
9. Paz is a fantastic player and vocalist. Should add to the band IMO. Thought they might have tried to nab Auf der Maur TBH.
10. You should be able to pick up a secondhand Bass Muff for £30 - £40. Should get you to the new year easily enough.
11. Just a quick update. Picked up a SP210 "on trial" and have been trying it out at some smaller gigs and at practice sessions. Cant fault the build quality/construction but so far the tone ain't for me. Tried it with the LH500 and the Reidmar and in both cases the cab was lacking a lot of low-mid definition to my ears. Gonna grab a mates Terror head for practice this evening and see how that goes.
12. The only sound I cant get from my LH is that horrible "inverted smiley eq" sound. Everything else from reggae to funk is possible. For general use I usually set the eq to: Bass: 6 Mid: 6 Treble: 5 (or neighbour of the beast as I call it) Bright switch is off, limiter is on.
13. I'm in a few so here's a basic pubrock set we use. These isn't in order, we usually let the room dictate what's played next. Two singers so plenty of options. 14. I have regular GAS for a LPB Precision with a maple board Best thing to do is a straight A/B. You'll know which one is or you after paying few.
15. I use a Russian Muff and kick in a MXR M80 for the heavier riffs. Gets damn close.
16. In the grand scheme of things diameter really wont make too much of a difference. Someone taking up guitar will always have to go through the process of building up calluses and finger strength. The string tension, action and neck width/radius are probably more important factors to consider.
17.
Massive DT fan but I agree with the sentiments running through this thread. Since Scenes From A Memory they seem to have lost the charm that they had. There's no sense of fun anymore and it's all very dry and cold. Totally over-produced! I really wish they'd just stop trying to be a heavy band, it's weird and I don't like it. Truckstop
+1. I thought Portnoy was to blame for the shred metal infatuation but the last album was just more of the same. I reckon Rudess changed the dynamic when he joined. Moore and Sherinian were less eager to harmonise note for note with Petrucci. I still put Awake ahead of anything else they've released.
18. Haven't really taken to the newest album. It's a lot better than the folk music they've been releasing over the last decade though. Gossard needs to get more involved in the song writing IMO. He was definitely the driving force on the earlier albums.
19. Big fan of Dimarzio pups. Never had a bad one TBH. The DP122 is IMO the finest P upgrage available. Seriously thinking about sticking a set of 123's into my VMJ for some added punch.
20.
Nope, only with my head I'm afraid. I can't help but feel if you don't like the Terror head there is every chance the cab may not quite be to you tastes either... but I could be wrong.
Finest, I'm thinking I might just bite the bullet and pick up an SP210. If I don't get on with it after a few weekends I can move it on or donate it to the local venue. Cheers again for the replies.
21. Brahms - Violin Concerto Dmaj, Op77. Will be playing enough tripe at a session later tonight so I'm pre-empting that with something decent.
22. Cheers for all the replies lads, appreciate it. @BurritoBass & Phil, essentially I'd be looking at using these for most of my dep/session work for at least the next two years. Have you tried the cabs with other heads (I never got on well with the Terror head)? How versatile are the boxes with respect to tonal variations. FWIW, I'd be using anything from an EHX 44 Magnum to a LH500 to power the cabs depending on the gig and venue.
