A great result! Two questions - what does the finished beast weigh and what type of plywood did you use (and where did you get it)? Alex
That's 3 questions But good point, I'll take notes for my potential build
OK, here's my old basses. To the left my Hamer Scarab (and my old Laney rig - just like the advert they used to run). The Hamer sounded like a piano. It was an outstanding sounding bass and the neck was the thinnest I've ever played. I did however look like a dick when I was playing it and it had some serious neck dive issues. I p/x this (and the Laney head) for my existing '79 Precision. Next up, my long departed Travis Bean 2000 series #222 ('where are you sweet baby?'). I think about her every day. You'll notice (if you are a Bean aficionado) that the wings aren't as wide-set as older models. I bought the Travis Bean for £375 in a store in Lewisham in 1980, driven by a review I remember reading in Beat Instrumental and the fact that Mick Karn used one. I removed the frets, then had the board replaced with a fretless ebony one (I had a BadAss 1 put on at the same time). I then had it re-fretted by Dick Knight (the guy who built Chris Glenn's Explorer bass). It weighed a ton. I eventually p/x'd it against an Ibanez Roadster that I destroyed at a gig. Much love P
Cheers man. That Scarab is a beaut - anyone got any ideas where to find one?! Has to be white like this one!

Cool, looking forward to watching this develop, you've been talking about it for a while!
From a technical standpoint the 2510 has higher midrange sensitivity and 147cc displacement versus 102cc for the Beta 10.
OK, Thumper and Bill disagree from a technical (and personal?) standpoint! Sorry Bill, misquoted what I read about a week ago at about 3am on another forum.
Should have compared it to the old Cerwin Vega earthquake drivers that had 2 inches of XMax
2 INCHES? Christ!
I would suggest that you'd be better off posting this question on Finnbass. There are a lot more people on there who have or are in the process of building BFMs. IIRC I read one thread by a guy who had his Omni10.5s built by Thumper and he said that Thumper recommended the Beta 10s because of the smoother midrange compared to the Neos. Unfortunately I can't remember who the thread was by.

But I remember reading a post with Bill recommending the Deltalites over the Beta 10s (may have been on Bill's forum not the Finnbass one).
Thumper and Bill do disagree on this, becasue it's a purely personl choice. So I'd say screw the money consideration, do some research about the sounds of the two and choose because of that!

Gilmour, that looks great. You have really made me catch the BFM bug! Now trying to decide between an Omni 15 Fullrange or a Tallboy like yours... I have the 15" woofer already and I want to build something!! Don't hold yer breath tho, it won't happen til the summer, plus I have a P-bass projec tot play with at some point.
I'd normally be the first to call snake oil on cable issues, but having recently swapped out some of the cheap patch cables on my pedal board with some of OBBM's, there was a glaringly obvious reduction in hiss.
+1. OBBM's cables have worked wonders on my basic tone, insofar as they don't kill it like my old leads did! Instrument leads, patch cables and speaker cables have all made a difference (to my ears). I've finally managed to persuade our g**tarist to contact Dave for some leads himself, he keeps losing his leads at gigs...

String tree tore itself out of my headstock.
Personally apart from the falling over thing i wouldn't worry about leaning a bass against a wall, mine all hang from the wall which would put far more tension on the neck than leaning against a wall, mine all come off the hangers perfectly in tune. AS for the string tee you probably have enough of a break angle on the b/e without a tee so perhaps could use the Hipshot one which covers 2/3 strings or a fender style one or two if needed.
Hanging basses on a hanger puts tension in the same diretion as the neck is designed for, leaning them against something puts a pressure (albeit small) in a different direction from this, therefore is not necessarily the best idea. Doubt it is a catastrophic thing to do but it won't help! -
These are my main basses: maybe you've seen them before? ..and the new (for me) 5 string A Wonderful bass, that I first thought wasn't any good. Damn that bass have a lot of balls in it!
What didn't you like about the Wal to begin with? It's gorgeous! I'd love to have a Wal. I was playing some jazz (really badly) on Wed night and one of the saxophonists there is also a bassist. He has 2 basses, both Wals, one fretted and one fretless. He honestly had no idea how much they are worth now - he bought them about 15/20 years ago from a shop... Can I have yours?

Just sold my old Trace 2x10 cab, again was a pleasure and easy as pie. Cheers Rob!
Yea, think it may well be an older one. Anyone know how the older ones compare to the newer ones? Shame I can't re-wire it. Might still be ok though, my amp can handle 2.67 ohms and I wouldn't really mind it getting less power than the other cab although it's not ideal.
The black speakers were Celestions, blue ones are Sica. I prefer the Celestions personally, slightly punchier sound in my experience. Last time I played an 8x10 cab was an Ashdown with the blue speakers and it was horrible, destroyed the nice bright sound of the Hartke head used to power it.

I've used one of these at a gig and hated it. I am a Trace man thru and thru, think you may find it a bit "woolly" in comparison (not that it is really, just comparing to Trace tone IMO)
-
I too suffer from this! Status strings are great for staying bright (for me anyway). And reasonable prices too
I feared this may be the case. I don't know what individual impedance the speakers are yet as I haven't bought it as yet and the current owner doesn't know either. Probably won't if he's sure it's 8 ohms. It's a 'touring' Ashdown ABM810. It looks like a normal 810 but has normal black drivers of some sort as opposed to the normal Blueline ones. 1200w as the standard ABM810s.
If it has black speakers it sounds like quite an early Ashdown, or the Blueline ones have been replaced...? That may explain the 8ohms thing too!
no worries!! only really got to know them recentley!! what band you play for now??
I'm mainly in a function band thesedays, in an original poppy/rock band for a giggle and I play a bit of jazz here and there. Say hello from Martin and good luck for the gig to all of ya
