Hi Golder, I have never played one of the hybrid V-types but I have an all valve V type which I think has the same pre-amp? If it has 7 valves in it then it is the same anyway... Mine is called the V4 because it has the V pre and 4 power valves. Kiwi has a V8, with 8 power valves. Always wants more, that boy. I have never heard a sweeter sounding amplifier in all my dayz. Regarding cabinets, they come up every now and then on eBay to match this head. I am always looking for a cloth grilled and vinyl sided cab to match my V type so I will keep an eye out for your perfect cab too.
The V4 / V8 preamp is a different beasty altogether, redesigned for that series. The V-Type series is a dual 12AX7 preamp.
Ah! I spent too long on getting the text and you beat me to the answer! Ok, so I have two people suggesting the 2x2x10 option now. This does intrigue me because I have the 2x10, and have tried it, and I don't prefer it's bottom end to my 1x15 combo (and I can't imagine that the larger 1x15 cabinet is going to be worse than the combo). Perhaps we just have different ideas of what constitutes a 'nice' bottom end. I love the sound of fifteens, at least with my precision sound. I can imagine preferring all tens for a jazz sound (which I shall have soon, thanks to Champion Badger), but of course it's all speculation, and as bass ferret rightly noted, theory is useful, but it's what you hear that matters. All in all I'm looking for a warm rounded tone more than I am a really punchy one, so the 1153T seems a good option for now. It's also the safest option given that I do love my current tone, and this step is essentially that of least difference. I'd also like to at least try out the bi-amping facility on the new head, and the fifteen really should be more suitable for that (the Trace Elliot manual actually suggests this configuration for bi-amping, specifically in stereo, but it also applies to mono). Dan.
Hehe. Whereabouts in London are you? Do you wanna come try my 1153 before you buy the one you've seen? I'm about 30mins from central London on the train...
Why on earth would you want to block the ports?
The USP of the old TRrace range! Both unplugged for xHz, one plugged for yHz and both plugged for sealed. Never bothered plugging mine, mind. Dan, I think you'll be surprised about the 1153 cab (that's the one you're looking at getting). IME the 2x10 had a better bottom end than the 1x15. It's a nice Trace-sounding cab, don't get me wrong, but the 2x10 is "nicer" and kinda support bass_ferret's argument that another 2x10 offers the best solution.
Really, that easy? I'm googling to see if there avaliable in Aus. Edit, and they are, $141 each. Is it a simple job to replace? i'm pretty handy with a soldering iron.
Yup
Yup it does sound nice
Good good (I'd go as far to say it sounds BETTER with the Eminences...) Sorry I never saw ya last time you were in London, hopefully next time!
Personally I think it would be great with a BFC.
That's a mighty fine idea

I used an Ashdown MAG410T with mine or a TE 1153. Personally I didn't like the Ashdown with it but the 1x15 was nice. My current rig is any combination of 1x15, 2x15, 4x8, 8x8, 4x8 and 1x15... But any speakers will be OK, just make sure they make the sound you want!
-
I put 2 Eminence Beta 10s in my old TE 2x10 cab, that's 500W @ 8 ohms handling. Sounded nice!

Rare-ish, yes. I sold one a few years ago for over £300, so £100 is a bloody bargain. I have two of the combos now, and love 'em to bits
This is the place for Trace: http://www.britishaudioservice.com/trace_manuals_bass.shtml Go fetch!!
Hmm, last time I looked there it wasn't on the list Cheers!
Correct about the F1-X. I have the schematics for the F1-X, Trace V-series, Fender Bassman, BBE-BMAX-T, Trace V8(yes it's different) and they are all much the same component for component. I'm just about to have a look into a Peavey Max pre-amp valve section which at a glance again looks very similar. The Alembic F2-B is quite different.
Dave, could I be cheeky and ask you to send me a copy of the V-Type schematic? I had it years ago but carelessly lost it when moving computers... Cheers!
The topic of 2x8 Cabinet implies it is the cabinet. I've seen them in a couple of shops but not dared to ask to plug into one... maybe I will soon, am curious as to how such a small cab will perform.
Same here, so much so that I'm thinking of building a 2x8 combo later this year... Whoop

It's all about Status neck with Alder body. At least it is for my Retroactive.
I seem to remember the V-series TE's are based on the Bassman circuitry, at least the pre-amp.
Indeed the pre-amp is based on the Bassman circuit, a nice simple passive tone stack. Mmm. I like.
So the question is "Should I mod the cab to make it 2 x 8-ohms" and then try and sell it?
I suspect that may make it easier to shift (well, sell, not easier to move, for that you need to sell a couple of roadies too) unless someone once bought the AH1000-12 and forgot to get the matching cab..!

Er, exactly what Alex has just said!!
ah ok. seems like a bit of a waste getting the neo speakers if the amp can only go up to 450W, unless i can find a good used deal. anyway i read on the wiki that if you use very powerful speakers with a not very powerful head, you can damadge the speakers. and if you use the rig at really low volumes for long periods, the speakers will also break cos they require movement to cool down, and at low volumes they arnt moving hardly.
Stop getting so hung up on the power ratings! Damage occurs just as bass_fereet says - if you hear unwanted distortion, THAT's when you have a problem. Simply using cabs with a higher thermal rating does f**k all. My Trace 8x8 rig is a power section of 280W RMS, the internal combo speakers are rated 600W overall, the extension cab a further 240W. I wouldn't be using that set up if there a danger in doing so!
IMPORTANT NOTE: it is quite possible to damage high powered speakers by driving them with a lower powered amplifier that is being driven at full volume. Although this seems counter-intuitive the physics of sound make this possible. For this reason, you should avoid driving your amplifier at full volume to the point where is starts to distort badly (some mild “musical” distortion is acceptable). If you cannot get enough clean volume from your amplifier you need a more powerful amplifier. thats what it says in the wiki, thats where i read it from
Yeah, but just the fact you're using and amp which is less powerful isn't the problem. The problem is if you overdrive the amp, you *may* cause damage. If it sounds bad, turn down.
good point, well presented
Ta!
-
i've read somewhere that using a powerful cab with a not so powerful head can damage the cab. will this be a problem with that speaker, cos it will be like 1200W at 4ohms, and the amp will only be putting out 450W at 4ohms
Complete bollocks. If you hear unwanted distortion, turn down. Other than that, read the wiki!!

Not sure on the full ins and outs of the GK system but biamping essentially splits the low and high frequency bands so separate amps (and hence speaker systems) reproduce smaller frequency bands which they are more suited to.
-
Um. ? Nothing else will take advantage of the head's ability to biamp.
Wot 'e said! Still confused why you're convinced two 2x10 cabs or similar won't be "loud" enough coz if you get the right ones you won't have a problem, lots of people have been telling you that on your other thread. But like Kiwi says, if youwanna bi-amp, you need a GK cab like that!

Lovely! I prefer the pearloid scratchplate too Any news on your other little project?!
I swear I read somewhere he was 15 and his folks were paying for this. Maybe in the previous thread - the one about Marshall v Ashdown?
I read that too, you're not going mad. Or we both are. Anyhoo, to the OP: All I can add to the debate is you're asking lots of people's opinions who have decades of experience between them and then you're ignoring or completely misinterpreting it. It really would be a shame to buy the Hartke just coz of the specs, then go and hear another rig somewhere which is a better sound for you which you could have bought but now you can't coz you have zero money and a rig worth half what you paid new. 2nd hand is really really really your friend. All my amplification, even now when I could quite happily by new, is 2nd hand and is all fantastic. No-one else knows, or gives a sh*t where it came from or how much it cost or what the specs are, they just like it coz it sounds good.
oh i've just realised. if i get the LH1000 head, thats 1000W at 4ohms. The 4x10 speaker is 1000W at 8ohms. if i only have one attached, could this be bad? i'd probably only be getting about 500W to the amp right? it wouldnt overheat the head or cab or anything would it? thanks
read the wiki and the stickies!
