Been playing for about 13 years, but I don't count the first 6 years as I never had a good focus and just plodded the same cr*p. Basically see myself as a solid rock player, in the Cliff Williams/Rick Savage mould; though I do like playing around a bit with funkier bits and so on I don't necessarily incorporate it coz I am sh*te. Play mostly 4 string thesedays but do love my Groove 5 for the function band. "Meat and potatoes" I think sums my playing up nicely

I miss the J-Retro from my MIM 5-string Jazz, should've kept it for my cheap J copy Miss a Dean Edge Q4 I had for about a year, that was a great bass for not a lot of money and I will eventually own another, just coz. I have now made the decision never to sell again unless I *really* must, so I'll just get a big collection instead! Almost sold my fretless Groove a few years back, so glad I chickened out. It may not get loads of use but when it does I remember why it's so good.

So, as some of you may or may not know, I'm looking to buy my first home. Wohoo! Getting lots of details, all is spandulous. Quite a few apartments around my area are 60's/70's build and have hot air heating instead of the far more sensible gas fired central heating with radiators and all. My mum asked a random question yesterday - how does that affect the wood on basses, the necks especially? Any experiences? Should I just not care? See, mother dearest reckons it could dry em out. Personally I reckon as long as I'm sensible and don't sit the basses on top of a vent they'll be OK? Bit like not sitting them right by a radiator really...

Wattage is a difficult one to quantify with "how much is enough?" because it isn't a true reflection on volume, or SPL. I've used a 500W Ashdown head thru a 4x10 cab and not felt I could get an adequate volume level, but my Trace 300W head thru the same cab was fine with the volume on 3. it's to do with effieciency of the amp, of the speakers, voicings of the amp and speaker (a more "middly" amp will cut thru better than a more "bassy" amp, c.f. my Trace and the Ashdown) etc etc.... But, despite all that nonsense, I'd say no less than 150W.

The fingerboard is "Phenolic" which is the bit you're talking about and the neck is a carbon fibre weave, which is graphite? F&*k me, I only play one of them and haven't got a clue....

Is graphite a form of plastic then?

I think "Why Go" off the same album was 8-string tho. "Leash" from Vs was on his 12 string too, lovely tone! I've played a Gelveston 12-er in the States a few years back, it was awful. Also played a Dean 8er and loved it, I'd love to get one for a giggle but can't see me using it much live in my current bands.
