Buy some ER-20 musicians' earplugs whilst you're still young enough to save your hearing! Without buying a bass rig the size of a small car you will never win the volume war. Instead, turn it into a dialogue where you all listen to each other and thus the guitarists learn that the volume knob turns in both directions. Play with each other, don't fight to be heard. If I was in your position I'd track down a used Peavey head and a couple of used cabs (2x10", 1x15" or a mix of the two). Or a single 4x10" (add casters if they're missing) and work on your lifting technique (visits to gym may help...) Peavey gear is really reliable and when you've been playing some years and really know what your ideal rig is (which will only come with time and experience) you'll be able to sell it for what you paid in the first place. If you really do want to spend £500 on a cab, which strikes me as a hell of a lot for a newbie, then check out the DR Bass cabs that Robbie @ RIM Custom is importing, I doubt you can do better. Alex
+1 to all of that. Listen to Alex, he speaketh sense

More often than not I use a 1x15 combo on its own against two Marshall Mode 4 stacks. That is doing about 180W. Just becasue your guitarists are using stacks doesn't mean you have to. What about the Eden Nemesis speaker cabs? Those cabs are pretty light and they're the cheaper Eden range. Re. jack-jack cables, do not use a standard guitar lead as a speaker cable. Bad idea (no doubt explained in the wiki). Get Dave (OBBM around these parts) to make you some nice jack-jack speaker cables.

Haven't cranked it yet, but i think the neighbours may complain when I do. That's be tomorrow night
If it had been this weekend I'd have never made it to Jct 8 to meet you, I couldn't get my car out of Nic's driveway!

Nik, good to see you again yesterday and nice playing! I thought the bass sounded grand and no matter what you kept saying about being rusty, Ben and I were saying on the way back that seeing you in full swing must be something special Oh, and I think I have a plan for the cab story should I ever need it...
-
Well, I got the 4x8 cab - thanx again to John for the pointer So, the full monstrosity: I'll more than likely use these two configs tho: 8x8, hooray! It sounds amazing This one sounds hooooooooge
lol I must admit they do feel kinda... ...its wierd how to explain, I can only substitue and say they feel "plastic-like" against the usual crunch you get with any new string(s) but I believe Mertons right & Ive never bought roto's online I guess I have to give them more chance But first, I've gotta get thru 7 packs of Elites strings, what a score from ebay for £50
Hah! See, I don't like Elites... but I can see why that's a bloody good deal. Similar to my 5 sets of TE strings for £35...
To be honest....They Suck!
Not stictly true. In your opinion! The thing is, most people who by Rotos buy them from a shop wher ethey have probably been on the shelf for months. If you get them direct from Roto (as I did when I had an endorsement with them) then they are fresher and last a helluva lot longer. I like Rotos - if I ever have a string emergency again (unlikely with the qty I have at home!) then I'd go to a shop and get Rotos. But I use Status strings coz I like them too, and they're cheaper. Must try one of the many sets of TE strings which I recently bought....

Hopefully one of the Vigiers
-
Haha! Nice and easy and free then, hooray!
-
When you rationalise can I have the Status then?
-
Maybes it was loose in the cabinet, you've unmounted and remounted it tighter and gotten rid of the loose bit, or at least made it less loose. If you see what I mean..

My Status Retroactive J. Yummy yummy. Sounded bloody good yesterday thru Luke's rig
What a great day. Highpoints were playing Merton's Retroactive and G77s Streamliner plus realising that I could lift Dood's Epi UL610 on my own.
Cheers Dave! Like I said, i'm glad it got a chance to be played properly today and glad everyone liked it You reminded me of my other highlights - the Streamliner (I want one sooo much now!) and your little pink Precision copy
Hello all, im new here, the names rich, from essex! i have been playing about 25 years, and work p/t at the bass merchant , and have a little duo www.bsharpduo.co.uk Any way i have two bases a steinberger sprit, which sounds great but give me a sever cramp in the left shoulder when playing it live, (any idea why? ) im not tall 5 6 and the strech to the f is a long way away, unyet when playing my 6 with a huge wide neck, i had no problems. I have just bought a levinson b1 tetra standerd. Oh my god, i have owend about 30 basses in my time, and have to say that this blows them all away! even the posh hand made jobs (imop) I urge anyone looking for a jazz type bass to try one of these, they are simply the best for playability sound, and the quality and action is darn near perfect as they come. At the bass merchant he has a cool white five string, that i just could not stretch to, £599 but the 4 string i have is fast and has the best slap sound. I have to take my hat off to levinson to come up with a bass under £500 which is just so so sweet! well done!!
Love the parrot! My gf has a little green and yellow parrot, buggered if I can remember what model number it is tho. She wants an African Grey like yours too.... Pics of the Levinson please

Big thanks to Ped, CK and Machines (and anyone else I've forgotten, sorry!) for sorting such a fantastic day. I left under no illusions about how much practice i need to do (not enough hours in the day), having fallen in love with about 5 basses and realised that my Retroactive sounds EVEN BETTER when played properly (i.e. by you 'orrible lot!) Bass highlights: Alex's RIM custom Luke's Vigier (still can't get over how perfectly it sat on the strap, amazing) Doctorbass's blue Vigier Rich's Shuker Amp highlights: Thunderfunk + DR Bass combination was awesome Sunn!! (Reminds me - Nash, I didn't get to say goodbye, was good to see you again!) Good to put more faces to names. Al - cheers for driving!

Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty with cream binding, block inlays, three pickups (black with cream surrounds). Just like Steve Clark:

Doesn't Eude have a 33" scale 5-string Shuker?

Two and a half at the moment, with the possibility of another one: 1. Function band 2. Original pop/rock band 1/2. Sometimes play jazz for a couple of bands, rehersals only normally but have a gig on Thurs in Wallington (yay!) Potential new original soul/rock band but doubt it'll happen. If I could, I'd rehearse or gig every night of the week

Couldn't live without the one I have on my Retroactive J, love it to bits.
Now that must be heavy! My wenge/ash thru-neck 36" scale RIM Custom 5 weighs almost exactly 9lbs, an ounce or two lighter than my '87 Warwick Streamer 4. Alex
My Groove 5 is no heavier than my Retroactive 4 I think. Never actually weighed them come to think of it, I just play em!! Can't wait to see your RIM Custom on Sunday, but I fear I may then get ideas....
