1. I'm on Bilbo's wavelength: My 1x15 combo is about 30kg, my 4x8 is about 42kg now it's got new (heavier!!) speakers and wheels. It's a bugger to lift into the car, but that's the only time I lift it other than to put it on its extension cab and as soon as it's on and making noise I forget about the weight. The extension cabs are both somewherre around the 20-25kg mark I think. I absolutely adore the sounds my current rigs make and couldn't part with them just to find something lighter. Ask me a gain in 10yrs and my attitude may have changed of course
 2. Awesome
 3.
I'm going Friday afternoon. he suggested bring my Trace head to try them out.
Cool, do it. And buy the head for £100!!! Bargain of the year
 4.
ok ok ok...even tho (several years ago) I did my physics A-level I still have a nightmare getting my head around this whole wattage/ohms thing! Broken down: Low ohms = more watts get through = louder. I get that bit, maybe not the why or how, but I get that it happens. Now, the big question...I've got a Hartke HA5500 (so that's max output 500w@4ohms but it's currently running 250w@8ohms) and I've got a VX215 cab thats rated upto 500w@4ohms. So, they're matched, it should all work OK but on the speaker outputs on my head it's saying '8ohms'. Does anyone know how I can get the full 500w@4ohms? Will I need to send it back to the factory, or is there a secret switch I need to flick? Any Ideas?
EDIT: what OBBM said
 5. I might be very wrong here but I don't think the cabs are genuine Trace.... Yes he says they've bene refinished but they don't look like 80s, 90s or modern TE cabs at all, the slot port is all wrong....??
 6. Cheers Nik, sounds good. I'll ask Phil Mulford if he's free and interested in a masterclass thing if you want?
 7.
Status...... every time.....
Yes, wholeheartedly agree. I should've put that in my previous post really
 8.
What's the deal with the fanned frets? Are they weird to play?
The idea is they follow your natural hand position a bit better as well as allowing more even tension across the strings thanks to the multi scale. That said, I've never played one so I could be talking out of my @rse
 9. Can yours fix torn drivers? We haven't figured out how to do that yet...
 10.
I have done lots of cabs with the Aldcrofts Paint and baby each and every one of them beyond words....I only have a tiny Wedgehorn done in the Aldcrofts now, its not so much impact damage, just that it rubs easily and scrapes against other things in the van / car. I would give the carpet another go following the tutorial. If you want to try and sell them they need to look Pro. Paint looks great for while but then starts to look worn very quickly. Just an amp moved about ontop of the cab will start to mark it very quickly. Its nothing like as good as the sprayed on stuff used by the pro cab manufacturers. It also does not take to car body filler well (bondo), I called in to see Julie at Aldcrofts who suggested to me to try coating the filler with some PVA first. I have not tried it yet, but it could be worth while trying that out. Dave
Our function bad PA is black paint and we have a special PA repair kit at all gigs coz they get knocked and scraped all the time. The kit? A black felt marker pen
 11.
and whats with all the def leopard jokes i love def leopard being a sheffield boy my self... one is not amused!!!
Yeah, me too. <sniff> Well, I'm not a Sheffield boy but I'm probably the only Def Lep fan left in existance other than my mate Ben The irony is that Rick Allen lost his arm TWICE. They sewed it back on but it became infected so had to take it off again. Poor bugger. If I lost my right arm I'd cry and then do what that famous one armed bassist does. If I lost my left arm I'd cry, then try to learn left handed and do what that famous one armed bassist does.
 12. Pete, excellent job! Love it
 13.
Fair enough mate, have you tried the Labs stuff, in particular the Mark King head? Sounds like itd be more your bag if you like the old Trace gear, 12 band graphic very hi fi. After all Ashdown is owned by the guy who made trace great in the 80's anyway. To me I cant put my finger on it but the new Trace stuff is just missing something in its sound, not really anything like the good old stuff.
I've used the original Labs cabs (hehe, I'm a poet and i know it!!) and same thoughts apply but not used the MK sig head. In all honesty at the mo I don't care coz I'm very happy with my V-Type Trace stuff but if I ever go buying new gear it'll be of the lightweight variety so I'm more interested in the Little Giant heads vs Shuttles, Markbass etc... I think if I ever get a Trace 12-Band again it'll be a Series 6 or SMX range, nothing else!
 14. Yummy! One of the ones without compression? If so the best GP7 head they did along with the Series 6 IMHO. Enjoy
 15. what did you get in the end?
 16.
Lol, fair play my furry little friend, just said what I thought, didnt say they were bad! After all variety is the spice of life. Hates a strong word by the way, so whats with the Ashdown 'hating' then out of interest? Seems a tad severe!
I guess hate is a bit strong, but apart from a MAG410T cab I used to have (running a Trace 12-band head through it) I have never liked the sound I've gotten out of any Ashdown gear, no matter what I've done with EQ, positioning etc etc. To be honest regarding the Marshall I've heard 50% good and bad reports about them, probably the same as you'd get with most gear as it's all very subjective.... If I were buying a new combo I'd probably aim at a Markbass or new TE range but what I like and everyone else is different
 17.
Im buying a f'king guitar.
Just make sure you use a 2x12 vertically aligned
 18.
I wish you wouldn't bait Mr. Fitzmaurice, because his posts are always worth a read. In your case a little (or should that be no?) knowledge is a dangerous thing.
plus the 1
 19.
They are ok for what they are, but very heavy and the sound isnt really that great to my ear. In my opinion youd be better off looking at the Ashdown MAG or ABM range. Hope this helps!
In your opinion and for the sound you're after I personally hate Ashdown amps so wouldn't recommend them, it's very subjective. I'm pretty sure there's someone on here with either that marshall combo or a head/cab set up similar and he loves it.
 20. Marcus Miller?
 21.
+1 I had a similar tingling fingers problem a couple of years ago. It turned out to be a lower back problem.
+2. I had CT type symptoms, turned out to be my left shoulder.
 22.
18V of Active goodiness every time!!!!
Yup Unless I'm playing my Grooves, in which case it's 9V. And my new bass (see build diary) is gonna be passive. Erm. That makes my arsenal a bit of a mixed bag.
 23.
But surely your 8x8 can't sound good as it suffers from comb filtering issues?? Or is that my point; these things can sound good in spite of the science?
And to a degree that's my point too. They CAN sound good in spite of the science but all Bill, Alex and bassferret are giving is the science. Bill is not stating opinion as fact, he's stating fact as fact. He doens't disagree that things may sound good to certain people's ears but that the general design is flawed for best response.
 24.
I tried to make the point in my last post that there’s a lot of subjectivity when it comes down to “what sounds best”, but either way I don’t think that anyone can reasonably deny or talk down the scientifically proven methods for efficient and effective cab design. Anyone that does is just a bit of an idiot and obviously lacking in any technical understanding of the mechanics of enclosure design.
Well said
 25. Chris, I think you're missing Bill's points. He is merely stating as scientific fact (er, coz it IS!) that traditional cab designs are flawed. He doens't say you shouldn't use them, he just says they MAY cause problems which better designed systems do not experience. End of. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion of what sounds good but Bill is merely pointing out the potential problems which could befall you. I used to run a 2x10 and 1x15 rig and in comparison to my 2x15 or 8x8 rigs I now use it sounded bollox. I've taken Bill's advise onboard, tried it out and discovered that it really does work
