Best bass you can buy has SVT on the headstock
-
Since "the enlightenment" I have burned all the records and CDs I had by artists who coned us by using none SVT amps. I realised as a bass player there are a few of us that have previously been foolish enough to use Pods & the like to get the sound we want (I know there is one member here who only uses a Pod for amp duties!). Worry not a few of us are hard at work on the Dave tribute non solid-state SVT bass pod: B
Now, where do I plug in again ?

You can't beat an all valve head... I'm afraid!
I'd always wondered who was the owner of this.
No, it's still not quite right. Can you just add a bit more to the mids please ? -
That's the thing, I'm trying to get a definitive answer of how heavy the Gotoh's are. If the bare tuner is 64 grams that'll take about 40gram off each tuner, not accounting for the fact the sleeves and screws may be lighter also. Looking just at that, I'd save 160 grams from the headstock. Taking two tuners out saved me 210 grams and was about enough. Would 160 grams do it? Hmmm. If the Hipshot bare tuner weight is 47grams, going by what I can find online, I'd be saving 232 grams from the headstock, again not accounting they may come with lighter sleeves and screws. This would solve the problem. And they are a fair bit cheaper. But as you say, it'd be nice to have standard-look tuners. The hipshots do look dreadful. Plus the Gotoh's come in reverse, to retain originality. You'd never need to take them off again. Thanks dude I think I may do this. Any chance you can do me a huge favour and take one out to see what it weighs? (On it's own, and with sleeves and screws) I'll know for sure how much weight I'll be saving then. No worries if not. If I decide to plump for the Gotoh's, do you want to come in on the order to save on postage essexbasscat?
That's really thoughttful and I appreciate the offer and the opportunity. It's come along at a bit of an awkard time however, as I'm committed elsewhere at the moment. I'd still be very interested to hear how the experiment works out though. Once again, thanks for raising this post, it's certainly given me something to think about. If the Gotoh's do work out, I will invest in some at some point in the near future, 'cos as far as I'm concerned, my RW P is a keeper T
Exact replacement, 64 grams each, although this doesn't state whether they include sleeves, etc. The hipshots come in at 47grams, but that's the bare tuner. Some sources online from the info I've dug around for say the Gotoh's are lighter than the Hipshots, but the Hipshots are so damn small, I wouldn't be surprised if they were a bit lighter. The Gotoh's will fit, exactly, in the place of the Fender tuners, whereas the Hipshots will look a bit crap, but the Hipshots are cheaper, (£90 to £130) and could be lighter. I'd normally just plump for the Hipshots, but I'd really like a set of tuners that don't look crap.
Yes, I'd also like to keep the original appearance (excluding the finish !) of my Roadworn P too. If the Gotoh's are significantly lighter, I'd pay the extra, as the bass is worth it (to me at least) T
My standard tuners are 105 grams each, not including the sleeves, screws etc.
Did you find out what the Gotoh's weight ? are they an exact replacement ? (but just look new!) T

two classic vibe precisions on here at the mo for £200 - very nice for the price would have one myself if I had the money T

I was sure someone would pounce on it !

Chinese (Crafted in China, CIC) Jazz bass. Perhaps the best value for money in this price range, although I'm sure someone will disagree T

Interesting post. I've just checked my Roadworn P for balance and found that the neck on mine is ever so slightly heavier than the body as well. I use a 3" stap, which seems to inhibit the neck in it's creeping tendancy towards horizontal. I do agree that the neck does seem inclined towards level, but my strap does hold it in place. I position the height of my bass to be the same in standing as it would be sitting in a chair with both hips and knees bent close to 90 degrees each. I wasn't aware of this issue until now, as I've yet to gig mine, but I do wonder if the neck pull on the strap will lead to shoulder discomfort on a performance of a few hours or more. All that said, they are fantastic basses, there's hardly a day that goes by when I havn't picked mine up several times. The first time is often before I go to work in the morning, which believe me, is something new. They really are impressive Precisions - mine won't be going anywhere without me T

Been thinking about this one since my last posting. The drummer's behaviour does seem rather extreme. Gareth, do you have any ideas about; - HIS view of what the problems were ? - Was he provoked in any way (however minor the provokations may have been in your eyes) on the last night (i.e. a bit of biting at his edges by other band members for leaving? carry -overs from past differences of opinion ?) I only ask this as from what is written on this thread, his behaviour just doesn't add up when you reflect on it Good luck finding a suitable replacement T
A shame when someone accepts the challenge to act like a professional then behaves like an amateur. A feather in caps though to those who take a 'show must go on' attitude and do the job they were employed to do. Grace under pressure - good on you all.
Couldn't agree more to all of this !! T

Have to agree with sentiments here that it's best to have both, if possible, as they are different animals. I've gigged my Rumour for over ten years and truly loved it as an actve bass. The tonal pallet on offer is hard to match, let alone beat. I've honestly yet to come across an another active bass with such a range of available tones. But it just doesn't produce that genuine passive Jazz sound - Now sorted with a Roadworn Jazz More GAS T

There is a certain 'something' about the black / maple combination...

small fine threads on grub screws + string pressure = potential for the screw to jump a thread, especially if some aspect the engineering is less than the best. The nail varnish option works well. I've been using this trick for securing grub screws in pairs of spectacles for years. Works fine. Just acts like Loctite, but a more commonplace solution to the same problem. T
JC's handle just about anything you can plug in.....I think they were originally designed as a keyboard amp
I remember this as being the case T

I've heard a warwick through a Roland JC 120, an amp that delivers full range acoustic amplification (like a hi-fi amp for your home sound system). Sounded impressive. T

As a bassist - a large garden shed on a set of allotments, Evesham hall (a large Norfolk mansion built on the profits of the sugar cane slave trade) and a list of back gardens with a band. As a brass band member - backs of trucks travelling around town between while I was 12 -15 yrs old, outside tube stations at November every year and wandering around town supporting carol singers playing trumpet. I don't remember being pelted with anything I do remember hearing the 80's band The Christians gigged a Westminster toilet for charity Quality ! T
