1.
Perfect! Cheers. Daft question do you just drill the screws into the bottom of the cab?
Most of the time I have but for anything really heavy I've removed one of the drivers to get access to the inside of the cab and used big penny washers inside to spread the load and nuts & bolts
2. I've only had my Sterling just over a year but the longest I have kept a bass was my Stingray 5 that I bought new in 2000 and kept for 6 years. Coincidentally both basses are/were black, black scratch plate, ceramic pickup and rosewood fretboard I have had about 120 basses in between those two ranging from amazing to dreadful and it wasn't necessarily the expensive ones that were amazing and vice versa.
3. I've been using D'addarios for years - mainly flats but have changed to rounds again. I've been using EXL165 on my Sterling and they are pretty bright and the smoothest roundwound string I've ever used - I've lost count of the number of wasted strings over the years trying to find "my ones" I changed my strings in the middle of December during the Christmas gigs and only changed them again last week. I could've got more out of them but wanted to give the bass a good clean, wax and lemon oil the fretboard.
4. I was having a lot of shoulder trouble towards the end of 2014 so I bought a proper wide neoprene strap and changed my Stingray 5 for a Sterling 4 and added hipshot ultralites. Also, as been said before, move around as much as you can as this shifts the weight from one part of your body to another. I have also found that relatively light weight training with dumbells has helped my posture and I don't get the usual pains that I had been suffering from. As you get older (I'm only 41 but have been playing for 29 years) you have to do as much as you can to make sure that bits don't start seizing up or falling off Everything I gig with combined weighs less than the lightweight 15" cab from my previous rig in this picture
5.
I understand going the DI route for gigs, but surely these little cabs have very little throw and sound quality has to suffer when you're up against a busy drummer.
My bass goes out front to the PA so I don't need a huge powerful cab or cabs like I used to. I find that the One10 has a pretty short throw so that I can have it at ear level as loud as I need but if I step 5 feet away from it, it isn't overpowering the rest of the stage which makes it perfect for me. I stand right next to my drummer and I have both volumes at 3 with the active pad switch engaged - it's really loud! If I went back to the kind of band I was in before with no pa support then I would definitely have big cabs again.
6. I've done more than my fair share of drunk posting, in fact I started the Drunk Thread whilst completely trousered I'd also like to add my name to not receiving a calendar of member's members please
7. I didn't like the 1001RB as I felt I had to really crank it to the get the GK sound. The 700RB was perfect for everything I did with PA or not.
8. I paid £90 to see Jerry Lee Lewis but that was Jerry Lee Lewis, Albert Lee, James Burton and a whole evening of music with minimal breaks in between and I was 4 rows from the front
9.
Any advice on where to buy in UK? I can only find Allparts touting a ridiculous £115. Ebay only listing US outlets with £15 - £18 shipping plus same for import duty. I need BT2 for japanese Geddy Lee Sig JB.
I got mine from Best Bass Gear in the US - fast, free delivery and no extra charges - although that might be the luck of the draw
10. I buy whatever sounds good to me and what I need - active or passive, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 12 strings, fretted or fretless At the moment it's the Musicman Sterling I've had for just coming up to a year at the end of this month. I rarely touch the EQ on the bass now and usually use the controls on the amp to suit the room. When I bought it the first thing I did was fit a new Duracell battery. It still has the same battery in it 11 and a half months later so it's hardly an inconvenience having to change it. I also carry a spare and a battery tester.
11. I briefly owned the GK combo but felt that it wasn't going to be anywhere near as powerful for what I needed. More recently I bought the One10 and have been gas free since - except for selling the MB200 in this picture and going for the MB500. The tophat option is great if you want to use it as a monitor at ear level. Fits in a cajon bag and weighs about 10kgs in total. A far cry from the 46kg Trace 4x12" that I used not that long ago
12. My first bass was a Marlin Slammer and the chrome on the bridge peeled off it. Never ever have I ever heard or experienced this on any musical instrument other than that one. My first proper amp was a Peavey TNT160 which lasted to the end of my first pub gig in1992/3 before being replaced the following weekend with a Trace 7210 Combo. The Peavey just couldn't keep up with the rest of the band and that was a small pub and it was on beer crates. Both combos weighed the same as a small bungalow
13. One of my favourite seups was a GK700RB into 2 Mag 410s. They went stupidly loud which I needed when depping with one particular rock band. Plus it sounded incredible but for most gigs it was complete overkill.
14.
Unless the lids are much deeper than normal I wouldn't consider that rack to be big enough, as for me part of the point of rack mounting amps is so I can have the speaker, mains and any other leads permanently attached to the amp in order to speed up setting up.
I'm with the OP on this. If it's only the amp that will be going into the rack then I can't see having cables connected being much quicker than not. In the past when I had a rack tuner and compressor I had a power strip zip tied to a rack blanking panel in the back with everything connected which did save time then but not for just an amp.
15. Not so much hardest to learn but hardest to play for me is Footloose. It's not that difficult but I have to play it without thinking about it, otherwise it goes all over the place. Same goes for the main riff in Voulez Vous by Abba
16. Not a sleeve but the Gator GR-2S is exactly the correct size for these amps. I had my LH1000 in one and it was perfect
17. I'll take a guess at items damaged in shipping to their warehouse as opposed to damaged by them. They usually have a rake of stuff on ebay - broken acoustic basses etc
18. If the £ / $ exchange rate ever got back anywhere near where it was a few years back it would certainly make an interesting project. Warmoth Jazz body routed for a MM pickup, Lane Poor Legacy MM Pickup, 3 band EQ and a Status Graphite neck
19.
When was the last time any of them had a record in the charts ?
When was the last time there was anything decent in the charts? Ok then - Dark Necessities by the Chilis is new enough
20.
When was the last time you heard slap bass on a contemporary recording on the radio ? In all my years of gigging I've only ever had to play it on one song, that was car wash.
Not a Level 42 fan then? Or Sly & the Family Stone, Fishbone or the Brothers Johnson
21. Isn't it nearly time for Tony Hart to die again? He hasn't died for a few years now
22. As soon as I hear slap I go onto the next video if I'm trying to get an idea of the sound. I wonder what percentage of bass players actually slap live at gigs or on recordings - 5%? less? So to most bass players it's irrelevant. Same goes when I was trying to get an idea of the sound of a Hofner violin bass. Every Youtube video had the reviewer playing with a plectrum as that's what McCartney used. I play with my fingers so, again, the videos were useless to me. As for fretless, don't get me started. I don't want to sound or play like Jaco, I just want to hear what the bass sounds like. Yes you can slide about the place and use vibrato as that's what a fretless allows you to do but I'm not interested in most of the other stuff I'll never use.
23. I agree with nickel being smoother on the fingers. I use D'addario EXLs and they are the smoothest rounds I have ever used which is handy as I have just changed back after using flats for the past 5 or 6 years
24. Brush script is as close as you can get to the Fender logo and the H at the beginning looks a bit like the F in the Fender logo
25. I would either keep the tonepump pots assuming that they are 25k ones or thereabouts the same as the EMGs and solder the pickups to those or forget about it and go with the EMG BQC or BQS system as it is a doddle to connect together
