I've always resisted going with what I consider the flavour of the month brands - you know the ones that get talked about at great length about how great they are and then suddenly the marketplace is full of them and people are on to the next one. The Rumble combo I currently have was exactly what I needed at the time but is now too big, loud and heavy for what I need. I would have considered that a flavour of the month product but exactly what I needed. Barefaced were at one point what I would consider to be the flavour of the month but I think things have settled down a bit (yes a bit) to the point that they can be talked about with other manufacturers constructively rather than this is the best and everything else is rubbish. I've always went for what I needed at the time rather than the next big thing. It has taken until now for me to come to the conclusion that a One 10 is exactly what I need at this moment in time and am incredibly grateful that Alex has come up with a cab like this. None of the other ones in the range fit in with what I am looking for but this one ticks all of the boxes. Time will tell if it is the one but I am only a couple of weeks away (hopefully) from getting it. I think that anyone who decided to go into business themselves and punch above all the big players in the marketplace and succeed should be applauded. I certainly don't have the idea, drive or ambition to carry off anything like that. Barefaced have created a product that probably most of us either didn't realise we needed or didn't think we'd ever be able to buy. It's not a one size fits all and may not suit what you are doing but it gives you an extra option over and above all of the big box manufacturers. I've kind of rambled but hopefully you get the gist of what I am trying to say.

That's an insane price for that. If it was closer I'd buy it myself

Like the OP I only ever go through the PA so I've ordered a single One 10 with the top hat mount as it's all I'm going to need. I've already bought a good speaker stand and amp to go with the cab. It's due in the next couple of weeks. I had planned on keeping my Rumble 500 combo but when I bought the Rumble I had said that I'd buy a Rumble extension cab for bigger gigs but have never needed one. Worst case scenario I could pick up an Ashdown 4x10" for much cheapness if anything big came up. Personally, if it sounds the same through the pa regardless of what you use then I'd go with whatever sounded the best to me. My stage sound is secondary only to how it sounds out the front and I'd rather have the best sound I could on stage than whatever is easier to carry. The better I sound the more I enjoy it

Also, the insurance isn't valid unless the bass is in a hard case

Strings Direct do single D'addario Chromes. I'm using 45, 60, 80, 110 on my Sterling But if you're new to flats then, yes, as with rounds it's all trial and error to get the right sound, tension and feel. I've been using Chromes for about the past 5 or 6 years in different gauges

Now if it was a most bored looking drummer award then it would be a first place tie between Charlie Watts and Nick Mason. Both of them look like they'd rather be somewhere else

I'm finding my Rumble 500 combo, fantastic that it is, to be hard to get a decent sound when it's quiet so I'm going even smaller. I have the input gain on 1 and the master on 2 and it's still really loud for my band I know the cab I'm getting will probably go as loud, if not louder, than the Rumble but the amp is a lot lower powered so I should get a decent sound at lower levels.

If you have a local TV shop that does installs - they usually have to dispose of the boxes themselves and if you get one for a 50"+ you only have to cut down the height of them

Once I get my Barefaced One 10 then I will carry my amp, cab, wireless receiver all velcroed together in a cajon bag with speaker cable in the accessory pocket. My bass is in a gig bag and in the pocket is my strap with wireless transmitter attached, cable for connecting the bass and spare strings & 9v battery for the bass + sweatband & microfibre cloth for wiping the neck. My cab has a top hat so I have a bag with a Gorilla speaker stand with a 6 gang surge protected power supply zip tied to it as well as the power cable. My bass stand is also in this bag. Lastly, I have a laptop bag containing a 10m extension reel, batteries for the wireless, wireless power supply and spare strap, cables, spanner for tightening my straplocks & tuners and screwdriver.

I remember when I was about 15 reading an article I think about Jack Bruce and he said he went days or weeks without picking up his bass and I thought at the time that would be my idea of hell. I wanted to play every day and did for years. These days I pick up my bass if I have something to learn, have a rehearsal or a gig. It helps keep my carpal tunnel under control and I'm playing as good or better than I ever have done in the past. I never practiced scales and have no idea what they are, I get mixed up with what is a major and a minor scale yet I don't feel that it has ever held me back. I don't read etc, I just love playing live.

I got mine from Best Bass Gear in the US

I wanted to go back from a 5 to a 4 so got one with the double stop lever and detune the E to D and B. Once you get them set up they're pretty much set and forget. You just need to remember to tune them as per the video on the website. I use Chromes and have a 110 for an E string it took me about 45 minutes to set both lower tunings but that's it set now

BTW after tonight's gig I'm pretty much sold on the idea of the One 10 and Minimax. Despite the relatively light weight the Rumble combo started getting heavy during the 100 yard carry to the gig. It could have been 2 miles for all I know. It was long enough that I want something lighter. Plus the One 10 fits in a cajon bag

You should be able to but I would rather use an A/B box to kill the volume of one while I use the other. Depending on the bass, the one in the active input might be a lot quieter than the one in the passive input.

It's the unending lure of the smallest, lightest yet still giggable setup. It's the thought of everything I carry into a gig, including my bass, weighing less than 20kg in total It's not gas as such it's more laziness the older I get 10 years ago I thought nothing of carting around 45kg Trace cabs every weekend but that just ain't going to happen anymore

Whatever I get would be replacing the Rumble so I'd still get a good amount of money back from that but I wouldn't sell it until I was completely happy with what I had. The band is starting to get really busy so I'm looking for the best of gear rather than whatever is on offer. I've got a really good bass, I've just ordered a Radial JDI to replace my cheapy DI box and if I can find an amp/cab/combo more suited to the band than what I have now then I wouldn't even think about the money.

As it would effectively just be a monitor, it doesn't matter how it sounds in the mix as long as I can hear it clearly on stage and with a Sterling it's hard to get a bad sound, even through the big muddy Ashdown cabs at the rehearsal studio. I've just ordered a Radial JDI for my FOH sound so anything that I do with the amp will only be heard on stage.

[/quote] Damn I was hoping that you'd say that it was pants compared to the Rumble. I'm finding that the super loud Rumble is too loud on stage and to get a decent volume level I have to turn it down past the point where it sounds rank rotten. I discovered the One 10 and Minimax separately but together they seem the ideal solution. I like to have my cab/combo up at ear level so I'll need to look for an even higher stand than the one I use just now. Ah well I'm going to see if the piggy bank has the requisite funds. edit - I've just emailed Alex a few questions

I bought Chromes singles 45, 60, 80, 110. Considering the different gauges they're pretty balanced. The 110 is so that I can drop the E to B using the HIpshot double stop. I've tried to get back into using rounds but I tended to go from one brand to another but with these I know they're good and don't need to try anything else. They give me the sound I want. I have a tendency to play too hard so at this time of year where I could be playing 3 gig weekends, the smooth feel means that they're a lot kinder on my fingers than rounds

Incredible - in the space of about 48 hours Meatloaf collapses, Rick Parfitt has a heart attack & Ian Paice has a mini stroke. At least they're all still alive, that's the main thing

Hahaha) [/quote] I use my Sterling in a wedding/function/corporate band and could be playing Etta James one minute and Justin Timberlake the next so I need something that can do it all. MIght sound cheesy and it has been said before but the sound really is in the fingers or rather where you position your right hand, how hard you hit the strings, if you pluck with your thumb or use your other fingers and so on. I get a wide variety of sounds just by doing this. I don't use effects and I don't touch the EQ after the sound check. I've always disagreed that you need a multitude of basses to get the job done, certainly when playing live - in my type of work changing basses mid set isn't an option so I have had to learn to adjust my sound in another way as explained above

Lordy lordy what a lot of fun this is. I have mine tuned to drop to D then down to B. Got it on Saturday morning and gigged with it on Saturday night. Took maybe 90 minutes to get it 100% but worth it as I didn't have to adjust anything during the gig except give the bass a tune up as normal I sold the 5 string at the end of last year and have been using an OC-2 since to add something to the sound for stuff that I was used to playing on the B string but couldn't get a good sound out of it so sold it and bought this. Quick run over the songs I'd be using it on during the day then off to the gig. Treated myself to single Chromes rather than a made up set so I could get what I wanted. I've got 45, 60, 80, 110. Sounds like it would be a bit uneven but pretty close as far as tension goes and the heavy E means that I can drop the E to B without it turning into a piece of spaghetti and flopping all over the place. Buying singles actually wound up £1 cheaper than buying a set from Strings Direct. Tuning to B is more straight forward to me than going for C as I'm used to a 5 string. I've used drop D on and off for years so that wasn't such a shock either. If you have a detuner or are thinking about it it is well worth going for the double stop purely for the show off value of dropping down during a song, never mind the convenience of being able to play lower notes on a 4 string.
