no such luck I'm afraid - brand new set of D'addario XLs were put on it. TBH I didn't think to make sure that the pickups were working before changing the strings. I've never had a faulty pickup before - faulty preamp but never a faulty pickup

£1600 eh? If I get on with the Jazz I've just bought then I can see me buying one of those depending on how this Fender pickup sounds. I'm guessing that this is a mock up based on the fact that the neck plate look to be the wrong shape, or the heel is or semething

It's an easy mistake to make - you're getting mixed up with the new Fender China Confucius bass 😀

Been using my G30 for several years and haven;t encountered any issues that would want me to change to something else. I change batteries before every gig so that I'm not caught short during the night. I use Duracell Industrials which work out at around 26p a gig

My favourite band name is a local band called Richard Stilgoe's Wheelbarrow Full of MIlk 😀 I was in a Black Sabbath tribute band, being Scottish we went under the name of Mac Sabbath - easily about 100 tonnes of PA and lights, wigs, the whole shooting match Quite possibly uniquely, we were our own warm up act as we also went out as Das Rainbow - our singer, affectionately known as Baldy Jim was of similar stature to Ronnie James Dio

After a couple of days with these magnets attached and checking every so often the result is that they've done exactly nothing I've decided to replace both pickups and get myself a new wiring loom while I'm at it as one of the volumes is a touch scratchy. BTW there was no magnet attached underneath so assume that the poles themselves are magnetic I've gone for a '62 neck pickup and '75 bridge pickup - both are Fender parts

In a wedding/function band there's no such thing as a ridiculous request. I've played some right rubbish over the years that I'd never heard of - luckily our keyboard player has a huge repertoire of forgotten classics so I just follow him. A few weeks back it was the other way around - we got asked for Wishing Well by Free and me and the guitarist had played it years ago in a rock band. The singer did a really good job of it as he'd never sung it before and had to look up the lyrics.

I managed to find a couple of rare earth magnets I already had in the house and put them on the poles about 5pm last night. I've just checked them and there does seem to be a bit of magnetism in the poles now so I'm going to leave them on the for the rest of the day and see how they are tonight

The NYXLs are slightly lower tension than the normal nickels. My usual XL165 strings are - 42.52, 48.35, 45.34, 38.08 (G,D,A,E) The equivalent NYXLs are - 40.28, 47.06, 44.58, 36.96 At this time of year I am not surprised at the rate that your strings are dying - we've played some really hot gigs and almost had a set go on me after 1 pretty short gig but putting it into perspective, I bought 8 sets in December 2016 and I am on set number 7 now. That is using the same bass for rehearsals and wedding/function gigs.

I have a strange one and a first for me in 31 years of playing: I have a jazz bass and on the A string of the bridge pickup there is no sound. There is something but it sounds like an extreme envelope filter, as in the really squashed sound. When I touch the pickup with a screwdriver the poles on the A only don't seem to be magnetic, the others appear normal. Is this a replacement job or can anything be done to salvage it?

The 1153 & 2103 are the most common of the smaller cabs - occasionally you may find a 2103X which also has 2x5" drivers in it as well. I'd completely forgotten about those 1x10" BLX cabs

I've never done this before but I've just received a rather nice Fender Jazz bass and thought I'd share it. It's a Fender Japan '75 reissue and the headstock serial number dates it as 1985-86 but don't get your cheque books out yet - on removal of the neck, the date on both body and neck is March '99. It still has a decent amount of age to it but this is clearly an example of how the Fender Japan serial numbers can go all over the place from time to time. There's one thing I am uncertain about though: On the neck it has JB-75M which I am guessing is Jazz Bass, 1975, maple fretboard but on the body it has JB-72M/EX. I'm guessing that means Jazz Bass, maple body, export model but can someone tell me what the 72 signifies? The brochure from 1998 also states that it has an ash body Anyway, there ain't no bass without pictures:

The graphite neck was the reason I heard as well but there is also a video somewhere deep in Youtube land where Flea is using a Precision live but I can't find it. When CLF Research, who made Musicman instruments initially, were binned in the early 80s due to an arguments over quality it was Grover Jackson who built Musicman basses so there's your connection with Leo Fender

Would it not be the two bolts nearest the headstock that take most of the tension? Personally I would prefer the 5 of my Sterling or 6 on a Stingray but the Stingray began life with 3 bolts then 4 and onto the 6 that we have now. I've just got myself a MIJ '75 Jazz and it has the 3 bolt neck but I'd take an educated guess that it was better made than most, if not all, of the 3 bolt US Jazzes on the 70s so I'm not concerned

The finger noise issue is usually due to having too much treble. I suppose I have a lot of that but when playing it isn't noticable. Just like Woodinblack says - because you have the option to add or remove 10dB of bass and treble doesn't mean that you need to. I set the controls on my bass when I bought it 2 years ago and have never touched them since. I'm happy with what comes out of the bass and the amp EQ is used according to the room I'm playing in

I agree - Player Series sounds much more inviting than Standard and warrants the higher price tag just for the clever marketing alone 😃 There used to be a MIC Player series a few years ago

I used to use a clean beer towel to do that years ago - I guess a small microfibre cloth would do the trick as well although this is a lot more compact
