whats the best way to play 5 string bass?
Delberthot replied to hagguy's topic in Theory and Technique
I played 6 string for a while but only had 1 5 string briefly strung E-C The only song I could think off right away to use it for was the chorus of Wishing Well by Free after the key change I found I used the C much more on a 6 string than on that 5 -
fingers 1, 2 & 4 for me too although when I play octaves my middle finger tends to straighten up and it looks like I'm giving the audience 'the bird'. I do get pain sometimes on the fourth knuckle of my top hand

I may have made this up but wasn't it Mo Foster that played on this? Him of Minder theme fame

Do you have a specific type of band that you are looking to get in? eg covers or originals, rock, jazz, funk or blues etc.

a bump to let anyone interested know that this is only available here until someone puts a bid in or hits the BIN button on my Egay auction Also for anyone worried about the weight - I am no muscle man. I can easily get this in and out of the car and the wheels make it a breeze to move about and if there are too many stairs then its a walk in the park with a 2 man lift and remember, if you are collecting I can include the stairclimber trolley for much cheapness. The weight is well worth it for the sound you get from it.

I could tell you all about myself, what bands I;ve been in etc but I won;t. Why not take a break, give your gear a good clean and pack it away for a bit and see how you feel. If you throw in the towel and sell your gear you may regret it in a few months if you begin to feel the urge to play again. Ok, I lied, I will talk about myself: I began playing bass at age 12. practiced every every minute of every day that I had free. About 8 years ago I suddenly found myself in the position where I never pick up my bass between gigs unless it is to learn a specific song. That's still the case today but I still feel the same buzz when playing. If I didn;t enjoy it then I wouldn;t do it. I;m the opposite to you in that I;ve always played in covers bands and always enjoyed putting my signature on every song I play unless it already has what I would consider to be the perfect bassline. I'm rambling now. The bottom line is - do what you feel is right for you and don;t have any regrets about it. You could always dust off the bass in a few weeks/months/years if you feel the urge to play again. No one is going to judge you because you want to jack it in for a bit and really, who cares what other people think as long as you are happy that you are making the right decision? If it feels right to you then it is right.

Removing cigarette reek from a cab
Delberthot replied to Delberthot's topic in Repairs and Technical
I have some foam cleaner that I am going to try first. It has 4 front ports but I'm not entirely sure that Trace lined the inside of their cabs. If it is then I'll probably pick a quiet time for the band, take the old wadding out and recover it as well -

Bonsoir Fantastic as my new / old Trace 2x15" is, it does reek of Sir Walter Raleigh's finest tobaccy, presumably from years of gigs in smoky pubs and possibly a smoky owner to boot. I've tried Febreze on it but since its really for fabrics its done absolutely hee haw to remove the smell and its giving me the dry boak Any suggestions on how to remove the smell - soapy water, recover the cab?

it weighs about 45kg apparently but doesn't feel it. The only difficulty I've had lifting it is the width of it. Its wider than a normal bass cab but once you get your arms round it its fine. I had to lift my 2x15" myself on Saturday up 30 large metal twisty stairs - now that was a challenge. For collection only I would include a brand new, unused stair climbing trolley. It has 3 wheels to negotiate stairs. The footplate is about normal size but it has a second footplate that drops down to take deeper stuff such as this cab. So for anyone who isn't Popeye and doesn't like the song Tequila I would include this for and extra £30 Monster is exactly how I would describe it and to think that these were designed to be used with another 1248 or the matching 2x15". For someone looking for a 1 cab rig that you can use with or without PA support in most venues then this is it.

I did have this in the Ebay listings sub-forum but thought I'd bring it into the main section. To give you a bit of a background, I had wanted one of these for years and when the opportunity came up to get one from a forum member I jumped at the chance. This is one of the rare cabs that were specifically designed to complement the Trace valve gear. PRICEDROP - I am now able to deliver this to mainland UK for £250 including courier or £200 collected. I'd also prefer bank transfer or cash if collecting, otherwise I'd have to charge extra to cover the Paypal fees Condition wise, the carpet covering is bobbled as would be expected for a well gigged Trace cab. Structurally it is solid and everything works as it should. Unusually it has a cloth grill but underneath this is the traditional Trace metal grill to protect the drivers from over exuberant musucians/punters. The cab is rated at 800w at 8ohms and also has a horn tweeter with attenuator on the back. Connections are usual trace 1/4" jack and XLRs. I have fitted wheels to this to make it easier to move. Soundwise, this cab is an absolute beast. Very deep yet clear. Some would categorise it as a classic rock cab but I used it equally as well in my wedding band. The only reason I am selling it is that I managed to find a 1524 that I have been looking for equally as long as I had been looking for this and it suits my sound better.

Unfortunately there are few places to even play, let alone meet other musicians in Falkirk. I would say to put a flyer into The Bunker practice studio in Bonnybridge. There are loads of bands playing there. Speak to Panda who usually runs it to see if there are any bands he know of looking for bass players. We used to have the Cottages jam session every sunday but that's closed down. They did try to revive it at a pub round from Polmont YOI but don't know if that ever took off or not. As far as playing goes in Falkirk you have Behind the Wall, Full Stop have started putting bands on and The Brightons Inn. My rock band plays maybe once or twice a month as we all have other stuff on but if we played any more then we'd have to start looking at gigs in Galashiels, Peebles and Inverness etc like we used to do when we played more. Try getting an ad sorted out and get it round the practice places and into the 2 music shops in Falkirk. I've tried the online ads and got nowhere when I was looking at alternatives to current bands a few years ago.
