1.
Well okay it is! Okay boys and girls of the basschat world, I'm not looking for a definitive answer, I'm looking for inspiration. I recently sold my beloved Genz Benz rig, hope you're loving it as much as I did bramleyapple because I wasn't in a band and didn't really have the space to store it. As always seems to happen, I got home from delivering the amp to find myself in a band, D'oh! I have decided on my head and will hopefully be getting it in the next week or two. I've opted to go for a Genz Benz Shuttlemax 12.2. So here's where you lovely folks come in to inspire me with cab ideas. What I'm looking for is a multi cab, flexible solution that's good for some really nice deep rumbling lows (Drop D tuning rather than Low with nice mellow, smooth mids for playing lead bass melodies in the more ballad anthemic songs. If it can do crisp highs it would be a bonus but not essential. So we're looking for either four 8ohm cabs or two 4ohm cabs, 2x600W @ 4 ohms power amps to play with. I'm not in a rush to get the cabs as the rehearsal room provides cabs and storage space is still going to be an issue for the next 3-6 months. As such I'm going to say that this is a "money no object" situation although don't discount the cheaper solutions. Weight and size are a factor as our rehearsal room is on the 4th floor of a building with no lift and I want to be able to carry my full rig by myself. An example for weight reference, I have an old Ashdown 4x10 combo that I would deem to buy a comfortable carry. So come on people, inspire me in to giving someone some money for the rig I'll never want to part with. Cheers Dave
If you're going to buy a barefaced cab(s) I would order it now because you may be in for a long wait (mine took 3 months). Hartke Hydrive cabs are both loud and light and you can order them today and get them within a couple of days.
2. My main Jazz Is a Silver Squier with a Precision neck. The pickups sound deeper than most Jazzes. They were made between 1992 and 1994 in Japan and go for about £200 normally. I forked out £250 for mine but that's because I really, really wanted one after playing a friends Silver Squier and really liking the sound.
3. Didn't he used to play with Creme Brulee?
4. I doubt it needs new pickups. It's more likely that the earth wiring has loosened or corroded. Are you any good with a soldering iron? If not take it to a local guitar tech and they'll sort it for about £50.
5. I really like Led Zep but I thought they were a bit dodgy at the 2007 reunion - especially Jimmy Page. Page has done eff all for the last 5 years so I expect he'll be even less up to speed this time around. But I know JPJ and Page were chomping at the bit to go out and play after the last reunion so who am I or anyone else to say they shouldn't go for it. They've been sitting in their moated manor houses watching Cash in the Attic and Jeremy Kyle for far too long they need to get out there for one last swansong while they've still got it in them. Would I buy a ticket? f*** yeah!
6. I've owned two (Unfortunately had to sell to finance a new amp). Fantastic FAT Stingray sound at a silly price. I will buy another when finances allow but until that time have a bump on me.
7.
Just started with a band with great musicians and the remit is to do a smattering of songs that people know and then a bunch songs that we can get our rocks off to. Its a funky kind of vibe....I've suggested to start. Any other suggestions of great bass tracks that I can put to the lads..... Cheers
I like it, but it's good to know even Pino can bollocks it up sometimes - at 2.41 he forgets to change.
8. A venue I play in provides one of these for the band along with an Ampeg classic SVT 410. First time I used it I wasn't sure about the sound but the second time I played through it the EQ had been set perfectly ( by the previous bass player who used it) and it sounded great! A very nice little amp and ridiculously cheap as well. Edit : Oh by the way I own the MiBAss and I have nothing but good things to say about that as well.
9.
Anyone got any tips on telling export from non ?
Nope! If there is a way I'd like to know though. Your bridge pickup is in the 60s position. Which is par for the course as most Japanese 70s Jazzes are made like that.
10.
Really enjoyed it. Not usually a fan of Mick Hucknall but thought his was a great performance. Stereophonics great, although horrid drumming. Like Lozz said, that Beverley Knight can certainly sing but for me, she overdid it. Vocal equivalent of a tooo widdly guitar solo All in all though, good T.V.
Interestingly the sterophonics drummer was using sticks while Ralph Salmins, the drummer for the rest of the session, stuck to brushes and canes. Ralph is a great session drummer and obviously felt the occasion merited a more subtle approach.
11. The only reason why record companies got into the business of making records was because of the introduction of mass media (records, CDs, etc). Businessmen realised money could be made from this new product and moved in. Record companies now realise that there is no longer the market there once was for selling mass media so are having to downsize. Although technology has been the downfall of the 'Music Business', ironically, access to technology for musicians means there is now more music being made than ever before and smaller acts can market and sell their music directly to their audiences without the patronage of a record company. It also means that acts that could once rely on record sales to keep the money rolling in, now have to get out and gig if they want to have a decent income. Which I think is good for music in the long run.
12. It depends on how high your action is. If you have a low action you may need to give the trussrod a tweak anti clockwise. If you're not sure how to do it there's plenty of info on basschat or youtube. Edit: You don't even need to detune your bass to tweak the trussrod (something I recently learned from resident experts on basschat).
13. I've seen them but haven't bought any. I know Trevor Wilkinson makes a range of higher quality guitars and basses which get quite good reviews. I'm assuming he uses his own pickups in them.
14. My definition is the same as yours. The same notes played by different players can sound very different.
15. A nice one went on ebay recently for £581, with an Audere preamp, which I thought was a bit on the low side. Somebody got a good deal. http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1438.l2649
16. I've bought a couple of scratchplates from them. Pretty good service and good quality.
17.
I think this bassline (by Paul Martinez) pretty much sums up what I consider to be "good bass playing": Minimal, essential playing, occasional well-chosen drop-ins, superb groove. Do NOT be distracted by the rubbish miming! It's not a technically challenging line (I can play it, after all) but it contains everything you need, and nothing else.
Never a truer word spoken. A less confident bassist would have tried to jazz it up and made it crap. Edit: this is the crap version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqEQKgxKo_0
18. You don't need to be a virtuoso to be a good bass player. A bass player that plays for the song (instead of for himself) is a good player. A bass player who makes the band sound better (rather than draw attention to his expert, if totally inappropriate, slapping technique) is a good player. A bass player who inserts subtleties into basslines, that makes it interesting for him/her to play and also adds something to the music being played (rather than a flurry of pointless twiddles) is a good player. I draw parallels with my bands search for a drummer. We've had many drummers play with us over the last few months but we didn't pick the Simon Phillips wannabes, we picked the one who had the most sympathy with the type of music we play. In my opinion he was the best and he's a GOOD drummer . And we sound 100% better for making that decision.
19.
Oh sorry I didn't realise everyone was aware of this one already, just thought y'know ... Begs the question why the bastards still allowed to do it on eBay though doesn't it? Not good really
It's back http://www.ebay.co.u...=item43b8cde899 His address on ebay is, Field Of Dreams, Olympus Court, Swansea Vale Swansea SA7 0AQ, and is, according to google maps , an actual field off a business park in Swansea.
20.
I have read on one forum that someone replaced their speaker with a Eminence Kappa 450watts and got good results. May be an option.
That was me, and I have to say I got a bargain. It was an Eminence Kappa 4 ohm speaker B stock from Blue Aran which cost me £40. I've played trough it quite a few times and heard other bassists play through it at volume too. Although it doesn't have the high frequency response of speakers like the Kappalite etc, it sounds excellent to my ears (not everyone wants to sound like Marcus Miller). And of course it should fit fine into your Mag combo as my cab is of a similar size. I used to own a Barefaced compact, which many people on basschat say is one of the best 1x15 cabs you can buy. It cost me £540 and personally I don't think it sounded £500 better than the cab I own now.
21.
Haha, that's funny, but where's it from? I realise i may have just made myself a social outcast.
Your education begins http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V3SqxUomwk
22.
I've got dibs on "Milton"... so don't use that one, alright? are we all in agreement? Ok, cool.
'What iz your name?' 'Don't tell him Pike!'
23.
I agree - modern bass sounds leave me cold. A background 'thump' with no definition is not bass. Melody, and adding to the song is! I did some recording recently, and TBH, was unhappy with the results. After much pushing, the bass was more defined in the mix than at first, but was still nowhere enough for me. I didn't want it out front, but clear enough to hear the lines, not just a deep thud - it's what it sounds like to me, anyway!
My theory is that the engineers are mixing with hi end monitors that can handle very low frequencies easily. But most hi fi speakers, that the track will be listened to at home, can't reproduce those lows. There was a time when studios had a speakers set up to replicate the 'home hi fi experience' and if the track didn't sound good on those it was remixed until it did.
