1. Been the lucky owner for a few months of a fantastic Shuker P - bit of a twist, it is a five string fretless with a real old school vibe - amarello fingerboard to look like maple but not wear out too quickly. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/173985-nbd-shuker-5-string-fretless-p-style/page__fromsearch__1 I love this bass to bits, don't even have a back-up. Does everything I want and more - slighly grungey versions of Dylan but also backs off nicely for "acoustic" sets. Also got it for what I considered a very fair price.
My Gibson Les Paul Buckethead Signature (2010 model)...I dont expect many to like this Owned a few high end guitars, but I really feel for this one. Larger chambered body, ebony fretboard just played and sounded so good ..and kill switches for madeness.
That fretboard looks lovely and I like the idea of chambered - just not sure about the couple of boils
 3. Does a cover have to be a slavish copy of the original - i.e. are Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends or EWF's Got to Get You Into My Life or The Byrds Mr Tambourine Man, Manfred Mann's Mighty Quinn covers? In my book they are, and what my band does with mainly Bob Dylan repertoire are covers, but like Dylan himself, we never play them the same way twice!!
 4.
I thought that was pretty inspired. BTW is it the use of Europe or Nirvana that you object to? I was going to post Abigail's house cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" that uses Leftfield's "Open Up" as the backing but I couldn't find it on YouTube.

To quote Louis Armstrong "If you have to ask, you'll never know"
Both I'd hope?
Playing with a jazz workshop band, loads of horn players plus rhythm section - I used a Henriksen Jazzamp 110 with a lead from the line out into a small Ashdown combo for a bit more bottom end. No problem with volume (was actually asked to turn down!) and a nice big warm sound. Most of the bassplayers I've seen with Jazz outfits (Kurt Rosenwinkel's trio and quartet, Jonathan Kreisberg's quartet, Ari Hoenig's band), all using upright bass, have all used small GK combo's. Maybe it's a New York thing........ Anyway, if it's real jazz, as opposed to noisy fusion stuff, then you won't need volume, just clarity. (No value judgement intended in saying "real jazz" - just trying to differentiate).
Yep, the DB player in the 18 piece big band I used to play rhythm guitar in used the little GK (MB1 I think). Always sounded very natural and always loud enough in that context.
 6. Lyrically melancholic but sung/produced in a really uplifting (almost cheesey) way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN3GbF9Bx6E
 7.
Hi, its rainy, its a bank holiday and I have to work. What music do you find brings you "down" so much that it hurts? I'll start us off with one that I find hard to handle. 1st up Johnny cash. I find it so depressing but I love it and can only bear to listen to it occasionally. I would love to hear more music to add to my mysery
I had a wierd experience with the Johnny Cash track - loved the album and had it in the car. Gave my very poorly (now departed) mum a lift while she was in a very bad way both physically and mentally. The album came on and I suddenly realised it probably wasn't the most appropriate and went to switch it off but my mum said leave it on - she really liked it. When we got to her home she asked me for a copy and listened to it regularly!! Must have freaked out the care workers frm time to time
 8. Should have asked him for the Bollywood gig - would be fun!
 9.
You cannot be serious our Tom's never as bad as that it is such a catchy song though
Agreed, it is a great song, would just like to hear a happy cover of it some time
 10. And not a mobility scooter in sight!! I'd really like this song - it should be as uplifting as the video, but why does he have to always try and out-miserable Morrissey all the time?!
 11. Do have a look at any Godins out there - seriously great guitars for the money and loads of versatility with the HSS pick-up configuration.
 12. No problem, and if you're in to cars, come and see me at the Sustainable Transport Expo at the town hall - pre-cursor to a planned alternative powered street race next year (not very rock & roll I know but itr pays the wages)!
 13. If you don't get anyone to help you sooner, I'll be there on the weekend of 8th/9th September. Used to have my own guitar shop, done lots of truss rod tweaking, happy to have a look then if you still need help. Mike
 14.
"Dolly Parton's Tits" by Roy 'Chubby' Brown. At some benefit gig for Lichfield feminists. Funnily enough, the only heckler was a bloke.
Thought that was by MacLean & MacLean - taken from the album "Taking the O out of Country"!
 15. Rehearsed with it last night - what a joy! Easily got the sound I wanted, plenty of volume, plenty of low end and yet still plenty of (and I use my words advisedly knowing Discreet is on this thread) penetration. And the get in at our rehearsal space is up a narrow staircase - bliss
 16.
They're just samples, not the full songs - as one reviewer put it:
Yes, sorry, posted before I had done anything more than a quick play fast forward through some of the tracks. Shame, Amazon have had some nice proper giveaways in the past.
 17. Thought I'd flag this up - interesting 50 Years of VP Records Sampler free to download on Amazon, unfortunately, unlike previous Amazon giveaways, it is only shortened sample tracks : http://www.amazon.co...WAU/ref=lh_ni_t p.s. I have no connection to this deal, just spotted it this morning and felt it was worth sharing.
 18.
I think Phil would us one of these as his first choice gigging amp based on what he was saying to me recently. Pretty impressive given he's had a lot of choice of much more expensive kit!
Yes, he was telling me that he was using this more and more over the Aguilar Tonehammer. Looking forwrad to rehearsing tonight (and getting up the stairs ).
 19. Picked up a Carvin BX500 from Phil at BassGear in Twyford yeasterday. Had tried it previously with several thousand pounds worth of his stock basses but wanted to double check it with my own bass. What a great amp - does the sound that I have been carting 25kg of valves around for the last year or so to get in a tiny little class D box with a 12AX7 pre amp valve - big, warm, deep bass but full of clarity and definition. The amp has loads of bells and whistles should you need them but also works brilliantly with just the basic tone controls. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that it only cost £359 for a US built 500 watt amp. Highly recommended as of course is Phil and Vic's service if you haven't already experienced it!
 20. Just sold my Peavey valve rig (power amp, pre amp and rack case) to Grahame - really easy deal, Grahame arranged collection, great to deal with, highly recommended.
 21.
Might help your health to stop worrying on the details (he said this did that etc) as they just go around in your head forever, and just decide what you want as an outcome Can he can change if asked ? No I'd guess Can you work with him ? No I'd guess Do the rest of the band like him/want him ? If not then encourage them to act for the right reasons If they do, state your case, even plead if you love the project, but if no success save your yourself the trouble and find a new band
Excellent post Lojo. Also, a conversation with the drummer rather than a text or email may well be a better option. Good luck, hope it works out for you.
 22.
At the moment, because of the exchange rate, it was lots cheaper from Thomann. I have just purchased a Martin from the local shop so they are happy with me. :-)
But after the repair charge, probably getting close to the £765 that is being asked for by a lot of UK retailers. Trouble will be in a few more years, when everyone is buying online from the cheapest supplier and there will be no local shops left to do the repair. p.s. glad to see you do support yours, there are lots of people that are driven by price alone.
 23. Could the local music shop not have supplied it in the first place?
 24.
I love playing my fretless bass. It just feels more natural to me. I suppose its because I started off playing a double bass a long time ago. "Home" is playing an unlined, fret free neck. Who needs 'em? Well that would be me when I see a P bass that catches my eye! Enjoy.
Pretty sure that's where I get it from as well - started learning double bass at the age of 13, 27 years later got back into bassw playing and now exclusively play 5 string fretless. Does everything I want it to.
