1. Jeff Berlin gets a free pass for life for writing 'Take My Breath Away'. I couldn't be bothered going through 7 pages to check if that joke had been made yet so apologies if it has.
2. Very nice. Will get to learning that to increase my tiny repetioire of DB songs.
3.
I got to play Calebs bass once. That was a good day.
I interviewed Steven for a website back a few years ago. I was hoping to meet Caleb but it didn't happen. He'd just started playing a P bass regularly and I didn't get to see the Grabber.
4. This is why I'd like one, even though I reckon it would look daft on me as I play my bass pretty high which wouldn't really work.
5.
Doesn't really feel like 9 minutes
It wasn't, it got turned off at 6. What year do these guys think it is? I though prog was short for progressive. Time to start called them reg rock.
6.
Looking at the prices they are quoting for Epiphone Les Pauls, Jap strats and squier strats, I'd say they look to be a bit on the pricey side. Do they do much trade at these price levels?
I've been in once and wouldn't go back due to the pricing of... well, everything. I'd rather drive the hour to Doncaster and go to Electro Music despite their dwindling stock, and I could walk to Wizard in 15-20 minutes. Never had any run ins with the staff but I've never really spoken with then in any depth. Got some Dunlop straplocks from Academy of Sound back in the day and fancied some more so walked to Wizard to find they were about £6 more than AOS for no discernible reason. The only reasonable thing in there were a couple of D*A*M pedals which were RRP and quickly disappeared after I foolishly pointed them out on the D*A*M forum.
7. That is really nice. Being a fan of Caleb from Cave In, I've always liked the look of Grabbers but play my bass way to high to look cool with them. Nice agressive sound too.
8.
tempted ;o
Do it. Then lend it to me regularly.
9.
I saw maverick harpist Joanna Newsom in Leeds and it was near the end of a loooong tour and she took breaks between songs to superglue the skin on her fingers about half a dozen times in the show. What a trooper.
Which is fine unless you forget to let it dry before you touch the strings again. Waiting round A+E stuck to a harp is an interesting story at its best.
10.
What did you use to fill/stuff the cab?
Maplin sell acoustic wadding for speaker cab stuffing/tuning. I imagine other places sell it too, and probably cheaper.
11. I play guitar in a pretty metal/hardcore type band. I play a sunburst Jazzmaster and as a result, am instantly more awesome than any other guitarist in a similar band. Bassist plays a Thumb.
12. If you'd have put this up 2 and a bit weeks ago, I'd have had it! Good luck with the sale anyway.
13.
charging like ray brown
I don't know who that is. So much to learn....
14. OK, it's been collected and I see what you mean. It's entry level to be sure but it all works. Biggest problem right now is the nut which seems to need some work. The D is raised by some wood shoved into the slot and the A is very close to the fretboard just after the nut, so close I doubt I could get all but the thinnest of plectrums in there. It's also missing the low E which will be sorted once my spirocore arrives. I'm guessing it's a transducer pickup under the bridge as I can't see anything else which is good, as I guess I'm not limited to steel strings. Same control layout as the Palatino (which I'll keep referring to as it's the only other EUB I've played,) volume and tone knobs, headphone jack and instrument out jack, battery compartment and on/off switch. There are marks on the neck from one of the previous owners, presumably to aid with finger positioning although they don't seem to actually relate to anything in the case of the ones nearest the headstock. I'm resisting the urge to mark the frets for myself so I get better at doing it by feel and hearing rather than sight. It's a lot more work on the left hand than I thought at first, especially if I use proper DB fingering but I'm taking it slow to build up strength. Here's a picture:- And here's a very brief soundclip of me attempting to play a bit of 'The Apollo Program Was a Hoax' by Refused to give you an idea of the basic sound. A bit of compression (Reapers Realcomp) and a free amp simulator (Acme Bar Gig Shred set to the bass preset.) Anplugged, it a bit louder than the Palatino thanks to the semi hollow body I guess.
15. Thanks for the advice peeps, I reckon a few lessons will go a long way for me so I'll look into teachers in Sheffield as well as checking out the books mentioned. And I fully plan to get a bow and using it, it was one of the reasons I wanted an EUB with a proper radius. I think I'll get some left hand technique down first before trying to bow, don't want to try and do everything at once and my pizz is alright from playing regular bass so I can concentrate on the fretting hand.
16. I got hold of my first EUB this weekend (the Artisan, there's another thread which I'll update with a proper info once I've put the bass through it's paces) and am so far just enjoying noodling on it. The bass I borrowed before had bits of tape for the fret positions and I was basically treating it like an upright fretless rather than a double bass. I reckon I should probably learn to play this bass like I would a double bass so I can transfer to any other DB type instrument and was wondering how everyone got started on DB? Lessons are tempting but expensive but I think a few might be good, but are there any good books or online resources where I could go and learn the basics, scales, playing positions etc? I'm trying to avoid marking the neck and relying on that for note positions. Thanks Gareth
17. They're all nice. I like Wals, nice, understated design and they sound really good too. Sadly, I remember looking how much one cost when I heard Justin Chancellor played one and knew I'd never own one
18. Fair points, I didn't even consider laptop use.
19.
John Chambers should be able to build what you need, although he's always pretty busy. He may be in the mood to work on a small amp after finishing his 1000w valve amp!
My Matamp could have it.
20. It's missing an E but I've got a spirocore on the way from Ben Bastin on here so I'll see how I get on before I order anymore thanks. I also need to know what kind of pickup configuration it has and what strings I could use but a few weeks of living with the bass should give me a better idea. My guitarist will hate it, he thought the Palatino was ugly and this is more unusual. Picking it up this weekend and will keep my eyes on here and ebay (if I have to) for an alright bow.
21. Nope, a half decent audio interface/card is needed really if you're going to record which makes it slightly redundant. I'm struggling to see the point really.
22. Form your own band? Only really advisable if you're 100% sure what you want to do. Learning theory and general practice for a while sounds like a good idea if you want to relax for a while. No point rushing into a new band you're not happy with. Something will come up, just maybe not straight away.
23.
I beg to differ, I can't think of anything he had the right idea about.
Controversial opinion on a bass forum! Somehow I've been playing bass for 12 years and don't think I've heard any Jaco. Agree with you on the scratchplate issue, Fenders look odd without it IMO.
24. A friend (of small stature as it happens) used to play one of the natural finish ones, it was a really nice playing and sounding (and looking) bass from memory. Think he swapped it for a Curbow after a while but he sang its praises while he had it.
25. You need one tasteful filter sound. Bin the rest. I may be biased though as I don't like filters, or indeed most modulation pedals.
