1. i'd say playability for me, there are many toys you can get that will adjust your tone to suit, but you can only adjust a bass so much to make it perfectly playable.
 2.
Remember, when I'm talking about gigging, I'm talking about gigging every week. Not the occasional gig that comes along or gigging once a month.
well actually you said "Most start up bands don't stay together long enough to see they're first gig". regardless, some people are happy to gig once a month. if you are implying that an originals band that plays a gig once a month and are happy with it are some how less of a band than a covers band that plays week in week out, then you are looking at music from totally the wrong angle imo.
 3.
Easily do-able if the band members are all sufficiently motivated. The Terrortones went from being just an idea of Mr Venom's to playing our first gig with a set of new songs written specifically for the band in 8 weeks. We had a demo of 7 songs recorded the following month, and a few weeks after that we were supporting The Meteors.
indeed, and i think in a lot of cases it turns out to be the case... but some of the comments here would have us think that only a special few ever get anywhere
 4.
Your the exception, good news just the same. Blue
all but one of my start up bands have played shows, one in fact had a full set written, cd recorded and gig performed in the space of 2 months... does this make me some miracle worker?
 5.
Getting paid is an important part of being a musician.
yes.... if you are doing it to make a living...
 6.
I know, it's just my take on his statements. It's uppity. Blue
to be fair, one could take your "My band is working and getting paid. I'm musically fulfilled" comment as "i am playing music and being paid therefore i am better than those who have a job" musicians be they full time or part time are equal.
 7.
work at it whenever I get chance - even the odd 10 minutes here and there).
this, i have a hectic life but if i have half hour or so spare, i focus on getting things done and making the most of the time. sometimes its better to have less time to spend on something as the pressure forces you to work smarter.
 8. i go through phases like this regularly, i get to a stage where i am not fulfilled by what i am doing but do it just to keep playing music, the lack of fulfilment then doesn't give me the mojo to go out and find something else. that's the curse of music i guess. it's worse when you are in originals, like you my tastes will vary from week to week, which is why my solo stuff varies so much. it comes and goes, but if we didn't have the lows then the highs wouldn't be worth it.
 9. i've done gigs like this before, some have been in front of good crowds at good venues or supporting touring bands so have made the most of it. i wouldn't do it if it was a pub, but as one off gigs sometimes its fun to pretend to be a rock star.
 10. having read through this, whilst i can see why they have cancelled the slot, they knew football was on so should have cancelled well in advance of the date, their facebook response is very poor form indeed. id make a post about on your own facebook and name and shame, their comment which says you could play 10-midnight.... which is at odds with their own email. im sure if 10-midnight was all you could do you would have done it as you were there.
 11. i do it on a 4 with heavy gauge strings
 12. its ok, my band used to agree to dates then tell me the day before they now couldn't do the gig.... that's awkward
 13.
There have been times when "you're headlining, you're on at midnight!" has made me inwardly tut as I'd like to be in my bed by then.
me too and im only 32. who even shows up to a gig at midnight unless its new years?
 14.
Thanks for the replies. I was the oldest in my previous band by about 15 years and so it never occurred to me that age might be an issue. I'm not interested in 'making it' any more, just getting out and doing the occasional gig. Perhaps the people I've spoken to are just rude and it has nothing to with my age!
you would be best advertising yourself than responding to adds, as most bands on there will either want to be gigging regularly or trying to make it, and if you want to do neither of those that may be more the turn off than your age imo. if you are upfront in your own ad saying "im 53, i don't want to make it, i just want to do occasional gigs" that will attract more people looking to do similar, you approaching a band that wants to go for it saying that is not going to end in the ideal outcome.
 15. you are only too old when you are dead. with join my band, i guess it depends who you are communicating with, a 20 year old will view 53 year old in a different way than a 40 year old might for example. i now consider myself too old at 32 to be considered by bands looking to "make it". when i was younger i didn't look for older musicians because rightly or wrongly i wanted someone who was at my level in terms of mentality and perceived drive to succeed. i never considered that older people were bad by any means, but i always wanted someone in my own age range, now I'm older i am less fussed by it. there are suitable bands out there, but filtering through the sh*t on join my bands takes time.
 16. i hate the bullshit lyrics first line - "so no one told you life was gonna be this way".... then later in the song "your mumma told you there'd be days like this"..... how can she have done if no one told you. pety i know but it drives me nuts
 17. the man who keeps sending emails telling you that you have inherited $6,000,000 from a "relative" in Nigeria?
 18. well as you are both thin lizzy tributes, cant you put on another gig somewhere and insist limehouse lizzy cancel their slot as it is too close to yours? im sure it was a management decision, but its not on by them really
 19. would "brave new world" by iron maiden count? it wasn't a reformation as such but did mark the return of adrian smith and bruce dickinson and turned out to be a pretty darn good album
 20.
Best to listen first if you can - a while back I visited the production room in Leeds to check out headphones, the sales staff were very keen to sell me some KRK cans, I wondered how much crack they'd been smoking to consider such a monstrously hyped voicing as 'neutral' or remotely useful for use in a studio. I hated them, but some people swear by them, so depends greatly on individual taste and the genre(s) of music you want to listen to and work on.
my plan is to go in and listen to as many as i can, unfortunatly the area i live in is void of decent music shops. if worst comes to worst, ill just buy new versions of the ones i already have, at least i know what they sound like.
 21.
I have a pair of Rokit RP-6 Many say they colour the sound but I love mine.
i was looking at the 5s, but have heard mixed reviews, some hate them some rate them really highly
 22. I have been using the same M-Audio AV40's for some 6 years, but last night they gave up the ghost and the left powered amp speaker is now a considerably lower volume than the right hand side. It seems like it is possibly something on the circuit board, but with no confidence in diagnosing or fixing it myself, it would be cheaper or more practical to replace them. They have served me well and given me good results, and a i could do a straight replacement for under 100 quid, but apparently the issue i have is common in the model so i'm considering upgrading to better options. I'm happy to spend around the 200-250 so this is putting me in the options of: KRK RP5s Yamaha HS5s M-Audio BX6s Obviously speaker performance will differ greatly depending on room, but does anyone have any opinions or experience with any of the above and can recommend them. TA!
 23.
In theory, it should sound better on your hifi than it does on your monitors (not sure how true that holds though).
we'll see, ive got a seperates system with yamaha amp and cambridge audio speakers so hopefully should sound ok. i'll try them tonight... or just go out tomorrow and buy new monitors. the M-Audio ones lasted me 6 years, may get some KRK's this time
 24.
Don't use your monitors as an excuse. You're a better composer than that!
i know, but im also the kind of person who can lose confidence in a song or mix if i don't like the sound of it
 25.
I do all my production through cans. Then I listen to it through earbuds on my phone, through the dock in the bedroom & through the car speakers so I can hear if any changes need to be made. I have an EDM composer friend that I send a soundcloud link to as well for him to listen to & get feedback from.
ive done it before, but i've spent the past 6 years using these monitors for everything, so it will be adjustment until i get some new ones.
