Hi there Some may recognise me, most won't. Been on here for about a year and never really pimped the band but we're on the verge of getting a van and taking this stuff out to the masses. Got some local gig's lined up, the highlight being a Halowe'en show on the 30th October which features some of the best bands in Edinburgh at the minute. I digress..... Here is a link to our home made demo, recorded all around our singers flat including the wardrobe...or the vocal booth as it was known for the duration! The tunes are 'Angry-Pop' and we have some killer new things in the pipeline a 7/8 latin groove with a suitably chunky chorus and break down? Oh yeah we went there! Add comments as you see fit - constructive is always better than one word slam dunks but most of all I hope you enjoy it. nice to see Ronson has got a new haircut, new band and doing the vampire weekend/ two step/80's retro thing....not! Nice Hellborg rig though! Jools has hit a difficult point over the last few years as newer bands are trying out lots of different sounds - and not what the mass audience would like to hear. Its good to see bands getting some airplay - just a shame so many of them are not what I like but ultimately I'd rather watch a season of Later... (albeit on iPlayer so I can forward what I'm not digging) than not have it on TV. Lets face it we can spotify or youtube any music we like - it's nice to be exposed to music I don't normally listen to - even if I choose to forward it. But Phil Collins!!!!!!!!!

Hey My understanding is that the older cans were 400w and rated at 4ohm. I could be wrong but when I got my SVT Classic I was told it was more desirable at the time due it being the HLN with speakon and an extra 100w power handling than the 'normal' cabs which were 400w. Try the ampeg site in the support or manual section. Good Luck!

Hey! Up for sale is a very well loved (tatty) Trace Elliot combo. While the covering may be a little road-worn its essentially in a 8/10 condition and the internal workings are clean as a whistle - I know this as the amp is as quiet as you'd expect plus I had it given the once over by my tech buddy. I'm adding a link to the OP from a while back that contain picture of a higher quality than I can generate right now - hope you don't mind mr p http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...hl=trace+elliot The cab is available for a try out in Edinburgh if your interested. Don't be fooled by the output - it's plenty loud and I wish I had it at my gig last night ....seriously a 65 watt bass practice amp and not even DI'd (f**king nonsense) to play with two 100watt guitar amps and full drum kit! I digress....... Price is £375 and Im not really after trades unless you have a decent cab - I'm hoping to get a more lightweight modular set up so that should give you an idea of trades. G

Hey chatters and lurkers! **Cab is in Edinburgh** The classic SVT 410 cab - this model was the first to incorporate the speakon connector, hence the HLN (N for neutrik?) and is now more commonly known as the HLF This cab has 500w/1000w peak power output/handling and runs at 4 ohms for maximum output. There is some slight peeling on the tolex covering due in part to natural wear and the removal in and out of the flight case- I'll include pic's later tonight. This cab is, for me, the ideal rock bass cab and delivers! However, having gigged last night and not able to bring my own rig due to the promoter say there was a 'bass rig' I found myself playing through a 65 watt practice amp. I need to get a smaller cab I can bring to gigs so I can hear myself and get a half decent tone out of! It's sad but thats how it goes - it soul destroying playing with a great practice room rig and not being able to take it out to gigs Pic's to follow later today PM question and I'll do my best to answer them. G

My 2 cents I had a '78 P bass a few years back in my old band. Got some really decent growl going thru an Ashdown head but what a neck! It twas big. I have played a Lakland BG or 64 I think they are calling it now but its neck was very 'modern' yet familiar its a Lakland so known for their neck profiles - slimmer yet wider than my current bass - an 08 USA Fender and I have to say the Fender from the 08 upgrades are really nice. For me it feels right sounds great (however I did just put a Nordstrand in mine tho the Fender stock p/u did look to be pretty solidly built, ever so slight overwind, good thick quality wires) The new USA's are well worth a look and well within your budget - after that its basically a matter of personal preference and if you wanna spend £1500 just to spend the money. I know of a 79 P bass, immaculate condition, literally been hiding under a bed in a case for the last 30 years with absolute minimal wear that you could get for about £1300. Its got a big P neck but that same classic tone and oomph. I'd go so far as to say this particular example is commanding! Good luck and keep us posted of you quest G

Seen these on the EBS site and having on of the Valve Drive pedals it appeals to me. With the 65 Amp Apollo, the Ashdown Little Bastard and this are we seeing a new trend for the small power studio bass head? I know I've used a MiniMat for a few years for home jamming and recording but like the idea of something bigger but not huge. Not sure how practical it would be in the grand scheme but I digress..... Any info appreciated and I'm guessing its based on the Fender Bassman circuit?

I've an Eden power amp for sale - buit in '98 and its been solid, reliable and without a hitch since I got it. Fashion dictates what the value of gear is not reliability or performance it would seem unless you're after the best you can get for the money/job. I went Eden as it was Bass power amp by a bass amp builder not a generic (though it would hardly matter I suppose) It has some great features and unlike the SWR power amp I had before it has never let me down. I was very disappointed in the SWR but once companies change hands their initial valuse can becime diluted - big business and all that! So if anyone wants to buy an eden power amp

So who talks to you when you get off stage?
krispn replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
We were setting up before a BOTB thing we entered (needed to try and win money for a van) and all the other bands were saying hi and being friendly except this one other band. They were sat there with their 'manager' being cool - there are 4 ladies in 'my' band and 2 guys and I think they expected they would have to show the girls how to switch on an amp, where the cable plugs in etc - and they made no effort to chat. Once we started to play the went very sombre looking. I made a point of chatting to them and being friendly but left before their sound check..... Come gig time they were ok but their mandatory cover song was Dakota by Stereophonic and I sh*t you not it sounded like each member of the band was playing in a different key! I went over after and suggested it was an interesting version of the song The results came in and guess who didn't win and walked out without saying a word. As for post gig we always gig away cd's after a show so we get people coming to say hi but with 4 ladies in the band I don't get much traffic regardless of how good my tone is -
Yeah at a recent little solo practice was just about to leave the room and noticed that a load of drum gear in the adjoining hall had fallen over due to the vibrations I was very reassured by this. In context I normally run the power amp full and the gain on the pre about 13.00 with the output volume set at 9. It's always got bags of output to spare and bridged Oi Vey!
-
Well spotted and it also states on the back of the amp it's 900w bridged @4 ohm and if I recall 1000@ 2ohm? I have a pic somewhere on my mobile I'll attach to this reply. Thanks for your question and if there is anything else I can help you with just drop me a line. JTUK Buy this instead and you can spend all that extra, non golfing time, not being frustrated and enjoying world class tone OK I found the pic but I'll get a clearer one taken if you would like - just let me know. Just a heads up - my lady ordered me one for my birthday -ahhhh - but due to thomann long wait bought one locally. According to their email yesterday Thomann have gone and dispatched me one after the order was cancelled. If anyone would like to have ot for the going retail price I'm happy to pass it on and I'll cover the postage. It will naturally go up on the appropriate for sale section once it arrives. If its any consolation I do enjoy mine and am tempted to use it at my next band practice for a bit of fun

Compact, light DI box that's great but not too expensive?
krispn replied to gafbass02's topic in Accessories and Misc
My band mates and I were just discussing this recently as we have 2 acoustic guitars and a keyboard to DI and we'd thought of getting our own DI's just to be sure that there will be enough for us at gigs! Interesting topic so thanks for bringing it up -
Stumbled upon this by accident earlier... I'm sure some of you cat's would be keen to have a listen - you can use the link below and follow the info on the site www.mesaboogie.com They are testing and comparing all the cab's in their range and then doing some side by side stuff. Not keen on the guy playing but he does some finger style, some slap with both 4 and 5 string basses. The 4x12" cabs sound good as do the 2x15" to my ears. Enjoy

What about those tiny wee laptop fans - make a a larger square out of 4 tiny ones - if they will fit and reverse two of them for air in air out action - smaller fans = less noise too right? It sounds simplistic but it might just work right? I'd be interested to hear the various way those who are more clever than me shoot this idea down Commence

You make a fair point - wonder if the for sale pages could have a useful guide for newbie and old hands alike stating what people would want in a for sale ad - similar to the way harmony central has a guide to reviews. A guide mean that ppl know what is being asked before they are asked right ? I know it could get right down into the minutiae but might be an idea. It's not something that could 'imposed' but a gentle reminder to 'posters' that there is a guide for advert might mean less to and fro? I'm all about democratic process but it might be interesting to hear the views of others. Might be an idea and areas such as listed below? With a combo things like: Tube/Solid State pre - Combo Output - Output with ext cab - Speakers size and Ohm's - D.I out - D.I. Level - Weight - Additional features:

You make a fair point but I think most people would agree that a degree of caution with any amp/guitar/pedal purchase be exercised and that means doing some background to be confident what you're getting suits your needs. For instance if I'm buying a pedal I'll ask if it is battery or psu only, what voltage psu it will require etc - This may or may not be included in an advert but should be asked right? You're correct it's not school but save yourself some time on wasted searching by contacting the seller and asking them the questions you have - let them do the leg work - if they are eager to sell they will get you the information you requested as best they can more often than not. Trust me having spent an hour last week writing an email giving a really through description of a rig I was selling to have the guy blank me for two days and then opt out of the deal its equally frustrating from the sellers side too - especially as I had included in my ad links to all the manuals etc. I bear no grudge against the guy -it's his right to choose whatever gear he thinks will best suit his needs - but my time was wasted. There are already lots of reviews out there on the gear I was selling, many being far more eloquent than mine. I was only helping the guy out! Bottom line is if I'm gonna drop some money on a product I'll be responsible for getting as much info as I can from as many varied sources as I can. We'd all be wise to be pro-active and then there is less room for disappointment. Rant over

Should/Can I combine capacitors in a P bass?
krispn replied to krispn's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks Hoiho that bit I understand - and Thanks Al for your comprehensive explanation. I guess the mud will kick in quicker with the .1uF and I think i'd like a bit more range with the tone pot so I'll stick to the less extreme. Saved me some extra work for sure Thanks again -
Should/Can I combine capacitors in a P bass?
krispn replied to krispn's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi Al Yeah I was thinking the .1uF would be too much and result in pure mud. Im no physic's major so my basic understanding is all I have to go on. I'll be using them in a p bass so only one output so if I understand you correctly Im not using two outputs- high and low- just one single output. Basically my understanding of what you're saying is that in series it's .032uF (and I could just find a cap rated at this and save me the extra soldering) while in parallel it would be pointless as it would render the tone knob pointless. In conclusion I'd be safe sticking with the .47uF in your view? I guess I'll se what other feedback I get but I'd be inclined to agree with you unless the 0.1uF added anyhting when the tone knob was at 10 (but I guess it wont) Cheers for the feedback G -
Hey there tech heads So I got some big old Russian caps and I'm thinking of trying them out in a P Bass - Im gonna install a recently acquired Nordstrand NP4, and a re-wire, into a VM Squire. While I have the guts exposed I was gonna mess about with some caps to alter the tone a little and was thinking of adding the .1uF to really bring out the low end but fear it might be too much. As I await the arrival of the new pots etc my question is has anyone tried a .1uF in their P bass and more importantly would I be able to combine a Sprague Orange Drop .047 with the .1uF to retain some high but add more bass to the tone or would it not be worth the hassle? If I had all the bits I'd just do it but hopefully someones experience could save me the hassle. Any views great appreciated as alway. I've added a pic of the caps along with a penny for size reference just to make the post look pretty
