I just bought an amp that said it was 600w I never thought to check if it was rms or peak. It’s never really occurred to do so but It was pretty loud at the gig when I plugged it in and played it. That’s sufficient proof for me. Folks are getting tied up in knots over a sub £300 amp because of an expectation or misrepresentation of the 2000w figure. What does your instinct say? We can defend the noob in a minute but what does your gut feeling lead you to think? Now I’ll ask have you played one at a gig? What’s your experience using this kit or is it simply postulation because...? Personally I look at the manual of new gear when I can. I’ve read manuals of gear I’ve never owned to get a feel for gear but I was very poor and very aspirational in terms of what I wanted to own and play😀Folks who know me on here can attest to that. I’m not one to believe marketing and I can ‘kinda’ figure out what an eq might do from the frequencies/features etc...kinda. Ten pages in and there’s still all this wasted energy on what it might do. I think the folk who own these heads state that they work on the gig? For those with the means buy one and test it on a gig and send it back for a refund if you don’t like it. If you just want to argue over the things a company might put in an advert well then you’re probably wasting your own time.

I’ve a p with a single t bird pick up more or less in the classic p position and a tone styler. It’s a cracking sounding bass!

You try testing a 500w amp at full pelt in the family home in a Sunday. I dare ya 😀

No it wouldn’t 😂😉 You’re severely overthinking it @Al Krow its a decent sub £300 head which will do the job most gigging bassists require of it. Does it do 2000w? I doubt it but few amps do without near perfect conditions. Go back and read the TC electronic stuff from years about misleading output figures - no different from VW and it’s emissions numbers on paper. Is it loud enough for a gig? The evidence would suggest so. Luckily one could buy three or four as rolling back ups over the years and probably have little to worry about.

If I may..: how the tone stack interacts in ags mode might we’ll be useful in understanding how the controls on the head are interacting. It might not appear much use on the surface but that post (the bulk of information within is not my own work I was simply pointing someone in the right direction) has a great explanation of the interactivity of the controls and how their function ’alters’ in AGS mode. I’ve not used the TH head but I do have the TH pre amp pedal on my board and the controls do behave differently in AGS mode, actually as described in the information linked above. If you can try out what’s suggested in that link it may help and pay particular attention to how the mids sound. There is a massive difference in the TH pedal ‘clean’ and with AGS engaged. My understanding is the TH head reacts like the TH preamp with the AGS engaged. It’s a good read!

I don’t doubt the quality but I think the 50w ampeg may well be much less expensive...even at full price.

Yes, yes I do!

The 48’s as standard have a p neck and power bucker bridge pick up config under the shiny covers.

The neck profile on these is great for a 5er

Yup it has one knob controlling it but how many parameters to actually tweak and get to grips with. You’ll probably love it after all the derision😀 Pedal board real estate isn’t really a concern for me as I only really use two or three effects as you know.

Indeed ...or recycling old tropes such as technique over compression. As a newly qualified 5 string player you may find compression useful... of course you may not but I hope to never read about it

Lads I already feel bad for regurgitating it all over again. We can all just get along. The new bc rules should be no political chat, no religious chat, no compression chat!

I’d totally try out a the HL comp and if it works ‘ better’ than my Cali I’d consider the possibility of swapping. If a product is noticeably better or adds something to the whole then it makes sense to consider the options especially if it’s important to you to have the latest version of a pedal. I enjoy what my Cali does I like the sound so not actively in the market but if anyone wants to A/B one in Edinburgh with my Cali just let me know 😀 @Al Krow most audiences aren’t going to consciously notice a lot of what you list over and above the singer and the songs. I believe that unless actively out to scrutinise a band rather than just have a few drinks and a dance folks aren’t that bothered. I know we’ll disagree over that but playing a bum note or screwing up a passage might not even get noticed by many let alone some of the other stuff listed. I’ve hit the occasional bum note and no one on the dance floor stopped dead and eyeballed me with contempt for killing their groove... Ok maybe the drummer 😀 Recently doing our Ska ‘7 Nation army’ cover I didn’t bother with the heavy drive on one chorus but did in another and again there wasn’t any noticeable different in the crowds response to the song as they kept on singing along. Generally folks were more interested in their immediate friends and surroundings than my choice of note, technique or effect be it in their face or beyond the realms of their perception. Ive said it before I’m not apathetic to the audience, I love gigging and a bit of banter with folk when playing. I understand that while many of us do understand where and how important a bass works in a mix a lot of the drunken hen parties we see don’t and would be bored to death if we tried to tell them. I’m happy that they remain as oblivious to my gear if it means they kee dancing and singing.

I think the guy who road tested the D Bird played in a very melodic heavy band and he rewired the bass to be the most usable in all positions electronics wise. The bass was initially set up differently but I can't remember exactly what.... it'll be on the net somewhere - maybe that last namm show premier guitar interview?

A combustio has the NG2 route so you could shift one pick up across into the NG2 config (but you'd need a new scratch plate to accommodate the shift). Not played an NG3 so can't comment. The Combustion5 I played had a wonderful neck profile for a 5'er!
