1. That´s definitely a completely standard Mexican Jazz, most likely from the early 90s. They came stock with the one-piece pickguard/control plate, Strat-style knobs and the all-black Fender logo. All rather ugly features IMHO but maybe a lovely bass. Starting bid is not unreasonable at all.
2. I´d love to have the law-suit Jazz copy (black, maple board, block inlays) I came across in a second hand shop for 150,- when I was looking for my first bass. Clueless as I was I didn´t buy it because the neck had a slight backbow. Duh...
3.
WoT is it you love about that 1971 P-Bass?
Fixed it for you.
4. I don´t think "conservative" is the right term. It´s like mocking a violinist for playing an instrument that hasn´t had a design change in centuries. If it does the job, why bother? I´m not playing a Precision because I´m conservative but because it sounds great, is comfortable to play and fits in any musical situation. It just works perfectly for me (plus I love the look). Don´t blame me for Leo Fender getting it right the first time.
5.
Are you sure that the "serious mistakes" aren't just edits in the clip? (there are many)
+ 1. Sounds like "camera hiccup" to me. Cool idea and fun video though.
6. Maria Schneider is great. I also love pretty much everything Gil Evans ever did. Also recommended for left-of-center big band stuff: Colin Towns Mask Orchestra (yes, THAT Colin Towns of Ian Gillan fame) George Gruntz Concert Jazz Big Band Geir Lysne Listening Ensemble and - of course, coming from me - the Vienna Art Orchestra (although they sound a bit stiff and formulaic these days. I much prefer the earlier material).
7. Darn, for a minute I thought there was a new Fagen album out. "Morph" is from 2006. Quality album though, great arrangements and grooves. BTW - the bass player is Freddie Washington (not Jackson).
8. Ahem... Rock´n´Roll enough for Bill Black, Marshall Lytle and lots of others...
9. BTW, just spotted a BB415 in the classifieds: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=43240
10. Eden made cabinets featuring speakers with coaxial tweeters. I think they came in 1x10" and 1x12". May be worth a shot on the ´bay...
11.
Thanks for that but that looks like a 10 hole jobby wheras mine has 13 holes - I expect they won't align properly.
AFAIK they all line up ok except for the one hole on the lower edge between the pots. You´d have to drill the body for that but that´s an easy job.
12.
And the award for inevitable BDDI comparison goes to Soulfinger (with an honourable mention to dood)
Actually, it was EskimoBassist who first brought up the Sansamp. The great thing about the MXR is that it doesn´t colour your sound (unless you want to). The great thing about the BDDI is that it colours your sound. Ok, i´ll get my coat now...
13. I prefer passive basses and have owned the BB414 and tried the BB415 - both excellent sounding, well made, gig-worthy basses (great B string on the fiver as well). Whoever looks down on Yamaha basses is not a "real" bass player anyway.
14.
Never underestimate the importance of sounding generic. That dude saying he wants players who have something unique is funny, immediately followed by a classic "LA Session"-sounding track.
So true. Nathan East is the epitome of "sounding generic" to me. He always makes me wonder how a talented musician of his caliber can sound so uninspiring.
15. Lovely P there - good move! Re. pickguard: Is it the gold anodized thingy you want? Thomann has them in stock: http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_pckg57p.htm
16. I bought mine from Dood (hi, Dood! ) and it´s great. The distortion feature is perfect for a nice, crunchy rock sound. I also have a Sansamp BDDI and they are completely different beasts tonewise. I can´t really say which I prefer, both are excellent IMO. Actually, the M-80 in distortion mode into the BDDI with the Drive cranked makes for some killer sounds!
17. ESP had a nice spelling mistake on their website a couple of months ago, announcing - in huge letters, lined with photos of evil-looking, tatooed, chain-wielding metal bass players - their new line of VITNAGE basses.
18. The basses do nothing for me I´m afraid but that archtop g*itar is making me drool...
19.
Try out the Yamaha BB414. I use one for the more intimate stage size gigs and it's rather spiffing. The P+J pickup arrangement will suit pretty much anything and the neck is really comfortable.
+ 1. Superb bass for the money, better than all the Squiers IMHO (and I´m a Fender fanboi). Of course if you can find a Japan Fender for less than 300 quid, get it!
20.
THIS IS NOT CORRECT! the Fender Jazz 24 has an active /passive pull switching...not the toggle..Believe me i have owned one..
Oops... my mistake, sorry. Just looked at the current specs - Fender must have upgraded these basses recently. When the Jazz 24 first came out, it was active only - I know because I´ve tried a couple and would have bought one if there had been a passive option. There also was a review in Bass Guitar mag where they told a Fender rep how much they would like to have a passive switch on that bass. Who would have thought that Fender actually listened to them? Oh yeah, I forgot - to the OP: If you can find one (discontinued), a Yamaha BB404 is a very nice 24-fret passive J-style bass. A bit more "modern" sounding than your standard Fender but a quality bass. Very affordable too.
21.
Is there a passive option on the Jazz 24? I thought it was active only?
Correct - the Jazz 24 is active only. The toggle switch is for a mid scoop/"slap" preset. Speaking of Music Man, there were passive basses in the SUB range as well but they are quite rare. Sandberg makes very nice basses, all of them can be switched to passive and most have 24 frets (except for the Fender-style California Series, obviously).
22. Will Lee had found a way to do this - I can´t remember exactly but he tapped the line with both hands, one on the E string and one on the G, starting with the double-stop (root/VII) and sliding down on the E and up on the G string to the respective target notes. It does take some practice but it´s not too difficult really and sounds very nice. Hope this helps!
