1.
Good stuff, would have been better had Bowie not been singing!!
More important for me is that Freddie Mercury isn´t singing. His pseudo-opera approach was such a turn-off for me that I never realized what a good song that is. Killer singing and playing by Ms. Dorsey. Need to replay that one more time (at the risk of developing serious Stingray GAS).
2. Stunning! Beautiful grain on that body. Please tell me it´s heavy as hell or I´ll go antigua with envy.
3. On my two P-Basses (one with maple fretboard, one with rosewood), I tried both rounds and flats. To begin with, the maple board P (Fender MIJ) does have a brighter, more aggressive sound with a slight mid scoop while the rosewood one (Fender HW 1) has a rounder, warmer sound with more prominent lower mids. I found that rounds were just too zingy on the MIJ while the Chromes complement the bass perfectly - it now goes from a dirty, growly 70s funk sound (think Paul Jackson) to a fat, soulful thump (think Duck Dunn) by a turn of the tone knob. The HW1, while a great Motown machine with flats, really comes alive with rounds. It now has that classic, cutting, in-your-face rock sound that goes so well with an Ampeg stack but still does a convincing Jamerson job with the highs rolled off. So for me it´s maple + flats and rosewood + rounds.
4.
I always wondered what "RC" stood for in the name of these current products. Does it stand for "Republic of China", by any chance?
Reduced Costs -> Rather Crappy, Really Cheap Rotten Components -> Ridiculous Craftsmanship -> Result: Chaos, Repair Costly. Then again, maybe it really stands for Republic of China...
5. Hm... sounds about right... Ok, forget about my idea then...
6.
I remember Tina Weymouth used to play a short-scale Hofner
I´ve only ever seen her with a Fender Mustang - which happens to be my recommendation. Yes, it´s 30", not 32", but it sounds very solid and is fun to play. Depending on the strings I put on, mine can sound from really fat and thumpy to funky and aggressive. Great little bass.
7. Could be a simple setup issue. What´s the distance between strings and pickups?
8. Steely Dan? Freddie Washington? I´m envious. They´ll never make it my way. Any particular highlights?
9.
I didnt know that OLP were liscenced by spector - Is this a new thing? it looks just as good as the low end spectors
AFAIK, the OLP Spectors were introduced a couple of years ago and are already discontinued. I have tried one, and I can see why. While it was well made, very comfortable and lightweight, it sounded rather dull and lifeless. Plus it cost almost as much as the low end Spectors (which, unlike the OLPs, have active electronics and are probably much closer to the "real" Spector sound). YMMV, of course.
10. Hi! I know how you feel about that Jazz - I can´t bring myself to sell mine either. I don´t use it much, but it´s so nice to have around. Good deal on the Esh!
11.
you certainly know how to take great photos of basses!
+ 1. You can be sure it´s really porn with Alan´s photos. Good thing Rays are so prohibitively expensive (to me, anyway) or else I´d have another GAS attack. P. S. Alan - don´t you ever wish you still had a P? You had some stunningly nice examples, and I for one am addicted to them...
12. Ugh... I´d like to see what the routing looks like underneath the pickguard. Then again, maybe not... In any case, like WoT said, that´s not a custom job by Fender, and the price should reflect that. I´d love to try one of the original Elite IIs, though - I`m beginning to like the look.
13.
It might just be me but IMHO play what you think is right. Don't get hung up on every precise passing note or slide.
+ 1. It´s good to have a bunch of licks under your belt, but IMHO it´s rarely necessary to copy basslines note for note (although it can be a valuable learning experience). BTW, I always rely on my ears rather than tabs or notation. You´d be surprised how many wrong notes and wrong or at least awkward fingerings you´ll find in books and magazines. Just yesterday I sat down to play McCartney´s bass line to "Something" according to the transcription in Bass Player, and there are a couple of wrong notes and even more faulty tabs.
14. Thanks for your suggestions.
Acoustic Image Focus SA.
3,5 lbs - now we´re talking. I was hoping for something less expensive, though. I guess Dood is spot on - there will be more of these in the near future, and probably more affordable too.
15. Ok, so Markbass manages to fit a pre and power amp into a tiny little 500W bass head weighing less than three kilograms. Surely someone must be manufacturing similarly small, lightweight and powerful power amps? I seem to recall that Dood had one, but that was a couple of websites ago...
16. ...put the cabs on top of the amp? I´d get my coat, but it´s just too hot today...
17.
Sunburst? Ah.. can't help you there. Sorry! It's to balance out my collection. I don't like odd numbers.
*gulp* *drool* WOT - Wow. Of all those bass collections I´ve seen on Talkbass, Basschat, Bass-whatever-mania, yours is the most desirable - for me, anyway. Pure class. BTW, the studio where I´m rehearsing has a ´76 P that is absolutely fantastic. Very light and THAT sound. I have to ask if they are willing to sell it - it´s been refinished (rather crudely), so I might get a decent price...
18. Well, I´ve only ever tried one, and that was a disappointment. Well made, typical CIJ quality, very good looking. Terrible setup, but that´s not the fault of the bass. Lots of sounds, but none of them inspired me. The electronics were very noisy, loud hissing and humming no matter what I did - active and passive mode, with one and both pickups, with treble on or off, different amps and leads... Personally, I´d take any standard Jazz over the Jag (even without the hiss). BTW, it´s still in the shop and has been for months, so others obviously feel the same about it...
19. Hello Dave, hi Dave, as previously seen on BW: White/tort does it for me.
20. Get this. Punchy, loud, portable. I love mine.
21.
Anyone else use a Tony Levin OLP?
I have one. Mine does it only slightly, and only when I turn up the volume on the bass all the way (which I never do anyway, much too hard on the amp gain). On another forum I read that the problem is the onboard electronics, something like the pickup overdriving the internal pre-amp, resulting in a distorted signal. I just keep the volume on the bass down and don´t worry about it.
