1.
Ive been out of touch with Fender for a while so ill believe what ever anyone tells me ;-)
According to some, it doesn´t matter whether it´s MIM or MIA - the craftsmen will be Mexicans anyway.
im hoping the HW-one neck will be a bit easier to play.
For sure.
2.
I believe they are put together in the corona factory in the states but some of the parts like the bodies come from elsewhere so they aren't strictly 100% MIA but who cares if they play and sound well.
From what has been posted by the Fender experts on Talkbass, all the Fender bodies and necks are actually manufactured in the US. Those for the MIM instruments are shipped across the border and assembled and finished there. HW1s are 100% MIA, with less options and cheaper hardware than the Standard series.
3. FWIW - I paid 240 pounds for my ´99 MIM Jazz in immaculate condition, and that was at a music store. Worth every penny BTW...
4.
Glad im now going for the HW-one. Not a great bass
I wouldn´t bet on that. Mine keeps getting better and better and plays and sounds sweeter than all the American Standards I´ve tried (partly because it is set up and strung the way I like it, but still...). So don´t be disappointed if you happen to get a great bass.
5.
I like these basses a lot and would buy one as a back up for my 70's P if it wasn't for that hideous bat thing on the body.
+ 1. IHMO it would be a smart move by Squier to offer that bass with traditional 12th fret dots and supply the red bat as a sticker for those who absolutely have to mimick that Wentz look. I wouldn´t mind the lack of a tone knob personally - I always have the tone wide open on my Ps anyway (and I don´t even play punk).
6. I have a HW1 (2004, first series) Precision and it´s my main bass. Great sound, superb craftsmanship (certainly above most US Fenders I ´ve seen), killer neck - nothing not to like. I´ve played updated HWs and they were brilliant as well. The finish is considered the weak point by some - the coating is rather thin and supposed to wear quickly. I don´t notice anything on mine, but then I´m taking good care of my instruments.
7. Whoa, I like that P. A lot. I recently played a 76´ in the very same colour. Great bass, not for sale unfortunately...
8. That... is... stunning! What a beauty. And you look really comfortable with it - looks like a perfect match. Great shots BTW.
9.
Ive just recieved my MIM from Thomann. It looks really nice. Its a bugger to play at the moment. Action is all over the place. It could just be im not used to the wide neck.
You will get used to the neck in no time. I did, and I have laughably short fingers. Other than that, maybe it needs a setup?
My biggest complaint is there is a gap down one side of the neck pocket. Should this be anything to worry about?
No. That´s the Mojo Compartment. It fills up with Mojo over the years and makes your bass even cooler. Really, that gap can be found on a lot of Fenders (except those made in Japan ) and is nothing to worry about.
10. Won´t get much cheaper than this: http://www.thomann.de/gb/search_dir.html?sw=jamlab I have one (couldn´t resist at that price) and it works a treat. Dead simple to use and no latency issues. The included software is rubbish though, better download something like Audacity mentioned above.
11. When I was fooling around with my Yamaha BB414 recently, I found that the pickup selector switch didn´t let me solo the neck pickup. I opened the electrics compartment and found that one of the two plastic clamps that hold the top and bottom parts of the switch together had broken - no contact in the neck position. Got a piece of coated wire and strung the damn thing together again - works perfectly. Not a very elegant solution but certainly more solid than the original design.
12. Being a certified P-nut, I´ve played dozens of Fenders and ended up with a Highway 1 (first series), a 1996 MIJ (alder body, maple fretboard) and a 2005 CIJ with US pickups and a rosewood board. I haven´t yet played an American P (Standard, Vintage, Custom Shop even) that I preferred to my Ps in sound, playability and workmanship. The Highway 1 is the way to go if you have to have a MIA P. If you want maximum bang for buck, nothing beats Fender Japan. All strictly IMHO, of course. Edit: Forgot about the 50s Classic MIMs - these are cool basses, well worth their money. Although I still prefer my MIJ.
13. Wow, that IS some porn. No wonder the sheets are in a mess. BTW, one more vote for black on black.
14.
It came with the pickup cover and the 'ashtray', as '62 P's used to be, but there's no ready made holes in the body for them. I'd love to put them on, but I'm not so sure should I start drilling holes on this beauty... What do you think? Leave it as it is or start drilling and put the covers on?
Hi! That´s a lovely pair (yes, I´m ignoring the guitars ). My opinion: Don´t put any holes in that P unless you are absolutely sure that the ashtrays will work for you. You could tape them in place and see what they do to your playing. I found them to seriously limit the choice of tones on my P - for me, the sweet spot for plucking is directly over the pickup and you can´t play there with the chrome cover on. The bridge cover makes palm muting impossible. So unless you´re dead set on cloning Jamersons´s bass (don´t forget the foam mute at the bridge) I wouldn´t do it.
15. You might enjoy the Bass Player interview with Watts: http://www.bassplayer.com/article/nathan-w...ul/Mar-06/18890 To think he played "Sir Duke" with his P-Bass tuned down a half step, thus having to bend the highest note up...
16. Just curious - why do you want to replace an entry level bass with another one? Don´t you want to treat yourself to an upgrade? On topic: The Yamaha BB414 is a great bass. I like OLP Stingrays. And judging from your avatar you should definitely try a Squier Vintage Modified Precision.
17. Well, what would you expect from an "Expert Village" video? Famous for their ultimate "String Stretching" exercise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k7igz-Pmkw
18. When I saw the thread title, I thought: "Jaco in reverse? You mean - no talent, no chops, no groove? I guess I qualify." I did have a chuckle when I read Dan Erlewine´s column in a recent Bass Player magazine where he got back a P bass he had defretted (the procedure was featured in a previous issue). The customer wanted him to re-install the frets because he found out he couldn´t play fretless. Erlewine´s comment was something like: "This is why it´s good to have a backup bass."
19. That colour is HOT. I´m sure it´ll look gorgeous with the gold hardware. Your wife has great taste. In basses, anyway.
20. Got started on piano at 6 by my parents, took revenge by getting heavily into drums at 12, taught myself trumpet at 18 and finally took up the bass two years ago. Played semi-pro as a drummer and lots of gigs on trumpet. I retired my horns some time ago but pick up a pair of sticks or brushes every now and then.
21. I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) - Cake. Incredibly cool version.
22.
Do the new Highway Ones have graphite rods?
Yes.
23. Oh yeah, I forgot: Wonderwall (Oasis) - The Mike Flowers Pops. Sheer class. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy1ueZf1WMQ
24.
Sorry but you're too late - the Stingray funded the Lakland!!
Oh yeah, I should have known. Never have any luck with the ´Rays. Re. Darryl Hannah - wouldn´t the preamp of choice be a Fishman? Ba-da-boom-splash!
25.
Totally down with Frank Bello
Anyone who has a signature bass is not underrated in my book.
