1.
A lakland Darryl Hannah 4 with J-Retro and Hipshot Detuner thingy....go on Soulfinger - be the first
Well... Congrats!!! I recently tried one of these (stock passive Skyline), and damn if it wasn´t the nicest Jazz I´ve ever played! If you happen to let your Stingray go, let me know.
2. + 1 on the hard foam thingy. Mine is a Rok Sak - pretty sturdy and lightweight. But - inquiring minds need to know: What bass did you get?
3. Hurt (Nine Inch Nails) - Johnny Cash Midnight at the Oasis (Maria Muldaur) - Brand New Heavies, Pleasure Old Town (Phil Lynott) - The Corrs Oh My God (Kaiser Chiefs) - Mark Ronson
4.
Whoever played bass on the soundtrack to the film version of "Hair" - as fast and groovy as anything!
Great choice - that was the great, criminally overlooked Wilbur Bascomb. "Hair" is jaw-dropping stuff. Jamaaladeen Tacuma never gets mentioned anywhere. And I think that Paul S. Denman is doing a terriffic job with Sade - tasteful lines, flawless time, wonderful sound.
5. Stievie Wonder, "Boogie On Reggae Woman". No way I´ll ever cop that feel, I´m afraid...
6.
Just about anything by Peter Gabriel, I think.
+1! The girl singers in the band I was in wanted to cover "In Your Eyes". I refused. Playing covers is one thing, desecrating masterpieces is another. I´d have to add Blur´s "Song 2".
7. A friend of mine has pretty much the same bass as pictured, only the 5-string version. These are very well made and lovely to play, very comfortable. To my ears, they sound more mellow and less aggressive than, say, a typical Fender or Stingray. A bit more "civilised," if you will. I really like the California PM. It´s Sandberg, BTW.
8. Sansamp + poweramp? The Sansamp does a pretty good Bassman impersonation IMHO, don´t know how close it will get to your Vox. Also bear in mind that a 2x12" will sound different than a single 10".
9.
The most intelligent thing i've read on here.
Oh yeah? Didn´t like my post then, ey? I tell ya, if this kind of snobbery continues, I will stop contributing to this thread.
10.
Personally, I play for a hobby and would love to go and play with a band etc. Sadly I have other commitments and like my wife and kids and a job and could not dedicate the hours I would need to rehearse/gig.
Not playing gigs does not make anyone a lesser musician IMHO. I know several killer musicians who quit playing in public because they feel it´s no longer worth the hassle. I have hundreds of gigs under my belt myself (as a drummer and as a trumpet player) and I know the feeling. I don´t need a stage, but I need the interaction with other musicians, jamming etc. It´s just too much fun. I have a wife and two kids and ever changing work hours, but I did join my first band as a bass player recently and having a blast. Not gigging yet, but we´ll see...
11. Since it hasn´t been mentioned yet - the Sterling also has a slimmer neck than the Stingray (think Jazz vs. Precision).
12. Is it just me or has the actual comparison chart in that Bass Player link gone AWOL?
13. Regarding the Tony Levin Sig - I have one, and although it doesn´t get much playing time these days (I prefer 4 strings), it´s a cracking bass for the money. Mine is the natural finish/maple board version, and it sounds good, feels good and has a really nice neck. I filed down two protruding fret ends, but other than that, the fret job is great. Tony Levin himself wanted the Signature to be an OLP so more people could afford it. And yes, he does use it occasionally (on his latest CD, for instance). Not long ago I tried an OLP 4-string - as it happens, in the exact same finish as my TL - and I liked it a lot. Very growly, funky sound, well made too. I almost bought it because my wife would have never noticed there was a new bass in the house.
14. 27 years or not... Father says NO!
15. Considering that the original 1951 P-Bass was designed for through-body-stringing and only flats were available at the time, I´d say go for it.
16.
Well i've never adjusted the action before but one of my best mates is a life long guitarist and has loads of experience messing around with string heights and truss rods etc so i am going to run it by him.
Do yourself a favour and teach yourself how to set up your gear yourself. It´s not rocket science and will come in handy in the future. Here´s the Willis link BTW: http://garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/setupmanual.html
I just wasn't sure weather the E & A should be sounding like they do...ie like a fretted?
You should get "mwaah" on all strings (unless played open as mentioned before). Before you start tinkering with the setup, I´d recommend you put a set of quality strings on your bass - good strings can make a lot of difference. I personally like nickel-plated roundwounds like Fender 7250s and D´Addario XLs for fretless.
17. Looks like a passive 5-string P-Bass to me - cool stuff, exactly what´s missing in the current Fender line-up. You could always try http://www.ishibashi.co.jp - they have a great reputation and ship internationally.
18.
The controls (on the 2000/2500/ASAT) are; Volume Pan Bass Treble with toggle switches for Series / Parallel, Active passive ( I think!), and a slap contour of sorts.
You might want to count the knobs again. The controls from neck to bridge are: Pots for - Volume - Treble - Bass Switches for - pickup selection (neck/both/bridge) - parallel/series - passive/active/active with boosted highs and lows
19. Two combos that haven´t been mentioned: - Crate BT15. I bought mine two years ago, and it sounds good, is lightweight and reliable. - Marshall MB15. Tried one in the shop - punchy, full-bodied sound you wouldn´t expect from an amp that small. Both have 8" speakers and aux-in for play-along practice.
20. Aria Sinsonido. These are for real, BTW. I played a fretless and it sounded lovely.
21.
Very Heather Small (M People)
Of course! Thanks Paul - I knew her voice reminded me of someone but I couldn´t tell...
22.
Go to www.showmehowtoplay.com and watch him playin "straight no chaser". Hes on a Live session thing at the bottom of the page. (Me on drums btw)
Hey, that´s some fine drumming there. Very tasty. The trumpet player´s not half bad either - steered clear of clichés with some very original lines. What´s his name BTW? Makes me want to pick up my horn again (and my sticks as well).
23.
And just for SOulfinger, some more Stingray GAS inducing footage of Ms Dorsey with many close ups
Oh, thanks, you´re too kind... I think... Good thing that was a 5er, not my thing.
24. Yeah, yeah, rub it in... Congrats!
