One thing to note is that the Alien is Korean made and the woods used are laminates as opposed to solid pieces
Whoa, didn´t know that. For that kind of money, they´d better use some solid wood. Warwicks really are the Heidi Klum of the bass world - nicely built, but utterly unsexy and well overpriced.
 2.
Is it on your wish list?
Of all the Warwicks that are not on my wish list, this one probably takes the top spot.
 3. A 2005 Highway 1 should have the truss rod access at the headstock, like Mexican Fenders. Plus the HWs have a matte finish unlike any other Fender basses. Honey Blonde was and still is a stock colour for HWs.
 4. 5-strings are overrated IMHO. For decades bassists have been doing fine with 4-string basses. Thanks to a GAS attack I also own a 5er, and while it sounds good and is nice to play, I find absolutely no use for it to be honest. We don´t play covers, though, so that definitely helps. A good P bass will get you anywhere.
 5.
Monk the the brother of Wes Montgomery was a great swing Electric Bassist, Using a pick and his Jazz bass.
Monk Montgomery started playing electric in 1953, more than seven years before the Jazz Bass was introduced. With Wes, he played a P, plucking with his thumb. Later in his career, he did indeed switch to a J - and it sure sounds like he´s using a pick here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI3lhVYQGXk
 6.
The B2 has an XLR DI output so you can have that going to the desk for your DI, while you're plugged into your amp normally, so if your amp fails it wont matter!
Actually, only the bigger B2.1u has the XLR out, the B2 doesn´t.
 7.
by the time it gets here i'll be selling everything i own (apart from my metro)
I´ll have the white Ray, please. Of the colours you listed, definitely Ice Blue. Personally, I´d go for Transparent Walnut with a black pickguard and a maple fingerboard with pearl blocks. Yummy.
 8. John Davis, the current bass player for Nerve, posts on Talkbass every now and then. His handle is, surprisingly, JohnDavisNYC.
 9. The problem with most jazz standards is not the tune but the players IMHO. Great players can make anything sound good (speaking of Oscar Peterson - he could even pull off "Satisfaction" ). When mediocre musicians play the umpteenth rendition of some jam-session warhorse because that´s really all they know, that´s when it gets lame. "Cantaloupe Island" is a good example. It gets played a lot because "hey, that one´s easy, it has only three chords and a funky backbeat". Wrong. If you don´t have a good idea what you can do with these three chords, it´s going to sound very, very boring. That said, I´ve never heard anyone play "Misty" in a way that made me enjoy that song.
 10. Just chiming in to say that I´ve dealt with AREA before and he´s a top bloke and trustworthy seller. Maruszczyk basses get great reviews on the bassic.ch forum, and a couple of top pros in Germany endorse them. So there.
 11.
the controls seem to have very little effect - using the dial to move bewteen the 2 pickups doesn't appear to do much.
Unless the bass has been modded, it has vol/vol/tone. You´ll find that turning up only one volume knob at a time will make a significant difference in sound. I´m happy with my BB404, with the right setup it has plenty of lows. Maybe a good set of new strings is all your bass needs?
 12. Chris Wolstenholme. He does a great job with Muse - he has a very original style, his sound and lines are an essential part of the band, he has taste and uses his effects to great, erm, effect. On the down side, everyone and their mother now have a Big Muff or some other device that turns their bass into a fart generator and litter Youtube with pathetic renditions of Hysteria. Fuzz used to be a really cool effect but nowadays it´s done to death...
 13.
If you're busking, you'll need as much volume as you can get in order to be heard over an acoustic six string, so I'd go for whichever one has the biggest body. Even then you'll probably still struggle....
+1 I predict you´ll still be needing an amp so I´d rather invest in something like the new Roland Micro Cube Bass - it´s small, lightweight, runs on batteries and is cheaper than a new bass. TBH I can´t really see the point in acoustic bass guitars. Too big, too uncomfortable to play, too fragile, too quiet, too much feedback when plugged in...
 14. I wouldn´t mind buying your M-80 but I´m not going to get rid of my Sansamp BDDI, sorry.
 15. Ahu? Looks more like Uaaah! to me...
 16.
Doesn't he use a metal plecky? If so that would probably make any bass sound bad.
I guess you´re right. It´s a pick made of copper IIRC. Still, he always played electric with a pick and sounded great on those old Scofield records, using what sounds like a P bass with a healthy dose of overdrive.
 17. http://www.thomann.de/gb/warwick_corvette_std_4_nt_bh.htm Nuff said...
 18.
Where did you play it?
At Klangfarbe here in Vienna.
 19. I played one briefly - pretty bass, well made, with a groovy, round, warm vintage-y sound. I´m not sure how it will balance on a strap though, and I didn´t like the neck profile. Similar to a Höfner Violin bass, somehow narrow yet bulky.
 20.
Yo BBC... Sure you aint a closet Jazzer...?
Of course he is! Look at his avatar... the beard, the beret... it´s all there. He even looks a bit like this guy, don´t you think?
 21. Pete Wentz!!!1!1!! *ducks* How about Seasick Steve? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNoPNC3ebYQ Oh yeah, and on bass - Steve Swallow. He keeps upgrading his basses only to downgrade his sound, it seems...
 22. Cheers Jon, I hoped you´d chime in. I´ll send him a link to this thread and let you know when he comes up with better pics. Thanks!
 23. Hi! I thought I´d help out a guy over at the swiss bass forum (bassic.ch) - he bought a semi-hollow, short-scale Made in Japan bass on eBay and is now wondering what it is: http://www.hermann-juppes.de/basssearch.htm All input appreciated - thanks!
 24.
Probably more to do with the sound mushing via youtube/the blokes camera etc etc.
Not in my experience. I just listened to the video again, through quality headphones - as I said before, I´ve played one of these and it sounded exactly the same, including the slightly odd, undefined (IMHO) character of the B-string.
 25.
I just had an email fron John who runs that site and he says the one I'm talking about is very standard fare, japanese pups etc.. Value £200-250 in OK nick.
Yep, spot on. The ones with the truss rod access at the headstock are the cheapest versions (i. e. basswood body, Jap pickups). Still, they are quality instruments, on par with Mexican Fenders (and probably better made).
