1. We are lucky to have an amazing musical chemistry in our band. We play all original material and come up with one or two new songs every rehearsal by jamming. We really had to hold back when we were practicing our material for the upcoming gig... So yes, the basslines are all mine, and some of them pretty much define the song. That´s a good feeling.
 2.
I think it sounds like that because he's playing it on an old precision, and probably with flatwound strings.
+ 1. And: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2uidYRrrUo...feature=related
 3. Don´t know if this has been posted before, but I figure it might be of interest to some of you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WluQwSkm1Tk...re=channel_page Pino Palladino with Simon Phillips and Philippe Saisse. Can´t find any tour dates though...
 4.
Do I want a Precision or a Jazz?
I know. You want a Precision. Fact is, every bass player wants one but some just don´t realise it.
 5.
I always had a soft spot for Talk Talk. They looked crap but certainly delivered on the songwriting and playing front. The last two albums (essentially Mark Hollis and their producer/keyboard player noodling in the studio with session players) were almost permanently in my CD player during the early 90s. Check out the drummer in this video.
*slaps forehead* Of course! How could I forget them, probably my favourite 80s band. "Spirit of Eden", "The Colour of Spring" - brilliant albums. And their music has aged very well, especially compared to other artists from that period.
 6. Damn! I´ve been GAS free for over a year, but I really want that fretless. If it sounds good, that is. Don´t see myself spending that kind of money on an Epiphone though...
 7.
Curiosity Killed The Cat. Yes, really.
Yes, really! Hot House Flowers, anyone? Big Country? Simple Minds ("Sparkle in the Rain")! Heck, even U2 managed to come up with some good stuff in the 80s.
 8. Nice vid. I thought it was funny that the guitarist told Marcus that the chorus of the song went "like (Sly Stone´s) If You Want Me to Stay" and whoever did the subtitles didn´t get the musical reference, tried to make sense of it and translated it to "if you want me to continue..."
 9.
Nor me, i was out of the country, in fact im always out of your country.
+ 1...
 10.
At present EBay haven't withdrawn the seller. Anyone smell a rat with this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Precision-Bas...%3A1%7C294%3A25 Did I hear someone say "Squier"? 4th bass sold in recent weeks having never traded in them before!
Yep, looks like a bog standard Squier Precision Special to me. Mexican Fender Deluxe Precisions have active electronics with four pots, not three, and a plastic "gold anodized" pickguard. They are available in Europe and never ever did they cost 1.200 dollars new.
 11. Hartke LH500 or 3500 + Hartke XL 410. You could do worse than that for slap, and Klangfarbe should have all of these in stock. Oh yeah, and since your bass is rubbish for slap, I´ll trade you my G&L L-2000 for it, ok?
 12.
All "prog" sounds 30 years old, because it is. It should be re-named "regressive rock" now.
+ 1. Vampire Weekend have some fun bass lines.
 13.
Opposite end of the spectrum, I've played through an Ampeg SVT a couple of times recently and I really didn't like it. That's a hanging offence in some places.
I recently got the chance to directly compare an Ampeg SVT-3 Pro /4x10 and a Hartke 3500 / 4x10XL. I really dug the Hartke setup and didn´t like the Ampeg rig at all...
 14. I like these (both the players and the shots):
 15.
The bass player was using a Little Mark II head into a Hartke 4x10 cab, and playing a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass. It sounded fantastic. I'm fairly sure that unless you're a player with specific tonal needs, there is no reason why most gigging bassists need to throw vast amounts of money at a bass when most modern lower end gear is so good.
Definitely. One of the growliest, punchiest live bass sounds I´ve heard recently came out of a Squier Precision Special - that´s the cheapest PJ they make - with replacement pickups (don´t know what make - they had double blades instead of pole pieces). It was played through a GK Diesel Dawg into an Ashdown MAG amp + 4x10. Sounded killer.
 16. I see your Prick (ahem...) and raise you this: http://www.tradetang.com/for-sale/Fender-D...71-1404988.html Of course, it´s neither Fender nor Deluxe. That website is full of wacky fakes.
 17. Ah, the BSW. Took me a while to figure out that gizmo. You´re on the right track with settings 3 and 4. The trick is to avoid triggering the envelope filter (wah effect). To do that, turn the sensitivity (the knob on the very left) off. If the wah still goes off, turn down the volume of your bass. That should give you the fuzzy synth-ness without the annoying "quack". Hope this helps!
 18.
Possibly the affects of a long tour on older bodies?
I wouldn´t want to blame it exclusively on Morrissey & Co. (although the songs were sub-par for the most part IMO). The venue they played (Gasometer, haven´t been there before) has a reputation for horrible sound but just how horrible I had no idea. Muddier than the droppings of a swamp monster on diarrhea. Doll and the Kicks however managed to get a decent sound. Ok, they were just guitar, bass, drums and a singer but still... Well, lesson learned - I´ll never get anywhere near that venue again unless they manage to bring back John Martyn, Jeff Buckley and Miles Davis.
 19.
Were you on medication
Lasagna and beer, nothing I couldn´t handle.
has your partner just left you
Nope. Still going strong after 12 years and despite her dragging me to that shyte gig.
were you just there at a gig for the analysis of the bass sound?
I figured I had to post some gear info to qualify for the "General Bass Discussion" forum. With Morrissey, unfortunately there was no discernible bass sound (or guitar sound, for that matter) to analyse. I did see a fiesta-red Road Worn Fender P and an Ampeg rig though...
 20.
Great stuff, production rather suspect IMHO.
Got to agree with you. They sounded much better live - no gimmicks, no backing tracks, just a honest, tight live band playing their behinds off and enjoying every second of it.
Would much rather see her play...
Do it! She has a great stage presence. And, as my wife pointed out, she´s hot!
...than Morrisey, who's the most over-rated artist of the last 40 years IMO!
I used to like his stuff but there´s some truth to this statement...
 21. Just got back from a really, really disappointing Morrissey concert here in Vienna. Probably the worst live sound I´ve ever experienced (including my own gigs ), uninspired performance, lame songs. Crap, really, sorry to say. But I thoroughly enjoyed the (all too brief) set by the support act, Doll & the Kicks from Bristol. Much better sound and very uplifting, hard driving music. The bassist played a Fender Jazz through a Markbass rig and sounded great. Anybody know them? Kickass live act IMHO, poor old Morrissey didn´t stand a chance...
 22. I think the key word here is musicianship. When the rest of the band view bass solos as a welcome excuse to take a nap there´s not much you can do about it. In my former life as a drummer, I always found a way to support the soloist, no matter what instrument they were playing. For playing behind a bass solo you just have so play softly without losing the groove but that seems to be a lost art these days. Drummers really need to learn to play with brushes FFS! I had the reputation of being the quietest drummer in town and that got me lots of jobs. The bass players loved me.
 23. Well done! You should still go and buy a P. (just kidding! )
 24.
The Roscoe sounds more like a P than a P
But it doesn´t look like one!
 25.
I'll go along tonight, roll the Roscoe onto the neck pup, pluck over that pup and sit right back on it.
Is there a P bass you could borrow? Just so they don´t have any excuse whatsoever ("Well, you know, we´re an old-skool band so it´s got to be a Fender bass")...
