Yorkshire Bass Bash 2011,Sunday March 27th 2011 to infinity and beyond
Gust0o replied to yorks5stringer's topic in Events
Lads, are we organising another one? I'm not even fussed about the bass bash, we could just go for a pint in town. -
You might find that if you're using your equipment in any professional capacity (ie do you get paid for your gigs) then suddenly your home insurance won't cover it. Or maybe it won't cover things left in an unattended vehicle. You'd need to read the exclusions carefully.
This is why my old MIM has been a staple of live shows - very cheap on the self-insurance front!
This 'D' profile might be great for you, or anyone else who prefers a big fat neck. If you've never tried one, go and find the nearest metal lamp-post. Grab the post just above the base where it thins out. Now go for a 'fretting' motion with your hand, imagining you were fretting the strings of a neck. The 'hand wrapped around a lamp-post' should give you a fairly accurate idea of what a Warwick 'D' profile is like. I recall on Talkbass, a lot of people didn't like Warwick because of 'the clubby neck'. Clearly, they were referring to the new necks as the old 'C' shape was nothing like clubby! In total, it's one of the worst necks I've ever played on a production bass, and I am a big Warwick fan!
I can't lie, this sounds absolutely horrible! To which models did this neck apply? Is it a limited run? I suspect I'm going to have to really try - as a few others have pointed out - to find out.

Could you be the most beautiful bass in the world?
Gust0o replied to CHRISDABASS's topic in Bass Guitars
Definitely in the eye of the beholder. I haven't seen a single bass in this thread that I like the look of.
I agree with a previous post that it would be dull if we all liked the same things... but blimey, we don't half like some different things! Different strokes for different blokes. I couldn't turn up to rehearsal and escape some banter if I turned up with any of the basses in this thread... not that that's a bad thing. Stay classy, Basschat -
Could You Be the Worst Looking Bass in the World
Gust0o replied to 4 Strings's topic in Bass Guitars
I've always been dubious of the Beast: Maybe you could add a pickguard; some ash trays; a thumbrest; and some relicing, to totally bollox it? -

Eye of the beholder, methinks! -

NOT GREAT NEW BASS DAY - EBMM Ray HH Matching Headstock
I'd be wanting interest on any money paid in advance too. Just out of interest how much did you have to pay up front and how much on delivery for this bass?
This! You've lost a year's worth of interest on that deposit. I think, at the very least, some form of notional recompense would be warranted given the nature of the problem. -
At rehearsal for a covers band: Guitarist - I've learn't the live version with the extra verse and two extended solos in. Rest of Band - Ok, so when we all agreed (last week) to learn the studio version you were actually lying when you said you would? Guitarist - No I meant to learn the studio version but then my mate said the live one is better. and.. When the drummer repeatedly messes up the intro to a song and suggests - 'I think it'll sound better if we all come in together' No it won't, just sort out your drum part.....
Great first post, chief! Welcome in! At least yours tells you... if this thread were called "Depressing things your bandmates do" I would add that one in - when the guitarist has decided to rehearse a different version of a song and it only becomes apparent when the chorus dies a death of mixed notes and expletives. It's even more galling if you wrote the song.
-

I'm looking forward to this. I haven't practicised since we last rehearsed, so it's good to get back into it
I don't think we need to know what we should sound like - just let the songs flow
I can't make rehearsal
We could do a gig right now
I think the EQ is fine
I can hear the bass just fine
You can't hear the bass at all, you bellend, as you insist on being at every audible frequency with your cackhanded guitar playing.

Help! What else is out there that has a simular tone to my grabber and T-40?
Gust0o replied to cocco's topic in Bass Guitars
Nothing sounds quite like the Grabber! It's a hard benchmark. Always been interested in the T40, but I'm told they're made from back-breaking dark matter - and I have the Alder Grabber as my back is made from brittle glass. -
Was in York last week on my way back from portsmouth match ...place was a shambles ....boom tish , its the way i tell them !
Boom boom! In other news, Mika will prove a great bit of business.
Yeah, do love to crank the hell out of it and have a HUGE wall of bass with a really tip top drummer giving it the beans, dont care what the rest is comprised of (assuming they can play) but I do really need a fab drummer to really get off on it properly.
Seconded!
-
I could lend you the world's worst guitarist, if you'd like? They should get on fine, and can safely form a new band away from people who might want to f***ing learn something... ? I'll work out what the shipping is on a live guitarist and give you a quote
-
I gave the rig a crank at rehearsal last night, opting to throw in some more overdrive than usual. It was great to knock the guitarist around for a while, rather than hiding behind his audible mistakes. Two things work for me - when you nail the tone, at volume; and the look and feel of a good, clean bass... made sweeter if you've spent the past hour or so oiling it, adjusting it, polishing it. Can't beat the bass for satisfaction

I'd like to add Paulo Jr from Sepultura, if I may, who has created some very tight lines over the years; as well as the seemingly unknown Mike Dean, for his work with Corrosion Of Conformity. Could I also squeeze in Mike Inez (Alice In Chains) and Scott Reeder... Might take Scott over Nick Oliveri if I'm only allowed one Kyuss bassist

When I googled this the oth
I thought the bridge looked quite cool
When I googled this yesterday, I thought I'd spied it with the three-point bridge - which, yes, does look cool; but is a bit of a dog!
-
Dont do it!, or maybe its for you.... ive owned a couple of each didnt like the warwick necks(too chunky) in general, loved the spector but then it depends on the model i have neither now and am happy.
Jaysus! So what's the solution, then... as I was quite partial to the Spector? Was after more of the same, ideally.
-
Would it have been so difficult to get the headstock right? They've just cobbled on the one on the current SG bass. I won't mention the pickups. A missed opportunity to properly reissue a classic and sought after instrument.
Or the sh*te bridge?
-
I will try and comment in a non-biased way
Haha, if you would please My Spector (I have an NS-2J-RA, for reference) has the biggest neck I could comfortably play for any period. I wouldn't really like to go for anything more chunky, lest I find myself rubbing deep heat into my knuckles of an evening! Chris, that was a brilliant post. I need a bit of time to digest it, I feel.
My toaster rattles when the washing machine is on spin.
Ditto. The dog also resonates on the same frequency, and gets very f***ed off with the washing machine.

I will offer the seeming flattery of saying that you all read as much younger individuals, than your years might suggest - proving there's a lot more to age than just a number Surely age only matters in the manufacture of music - where some form of Neilsen rating has informed the executives that they need 5 foppy-haired teenagers (at least one to be of ethnic origin) for an 'originals' band, backed by all the cynicism which the rise of X-factor et al has engendered in the modern pop industry? For the rest there's only yourself and your limits. Surely?
