Just turned the amp on to try out some of these fixes, and the noise has gone. At least i have some stuff to try if it comes back again. Thanks guys.

Getting a funny background noise from my amp this evening. It sort of sounds like the hissy crackle you get when you turn a dodgy pot, but i'm not turning anything. It's just there when i play, but not when i stop playing. The amp is a Crate BT100, and it's only had home use while in my ownership, never been turned up over halfway. Any ideas where i should start looking?

Bought a Spector from John, great bloke to deal with, couldn't be any more helpful. Cheers, and hope the gig went well.

Sounds good, might try and get down there tomorrow. How was John Paul Jones?
Im looking to upgrade the bridge on my Squier CV P as i want a different string spacing. I got a set of Vintage saddles but unfortunately they dont fit the Squier bridge. So i need a new bridge. I was going to get the Fender one but i saw this Wilkinson one and its a lot cheaper. As i already have the saddles it doesn't matter that it doesn't come with grooved ones. Ive not heard of Wilkinson before but they seem pretty decent, and cheap. Any comments etc? Wilkinson bridges Cheers.
Here you go mate. I believe all Vintage guitars are fitted with Wilkinson hardware and pick-ups. Anybody know what tuners are fitted to the NS-94 model, i'm guessing at Gotoh gb7's but would like a second (or third, fourth, ect) opinion. There should be a picture here if you hit the link and scroll down. http://www.spectorbass.com/about/headstocks_ssd.html
Cheap basses.... I love 'em too! Recently bought this for £20! 70's Kimbara (produced by Matsumoku). Lovely neck to play, good tone & suprisingly not plywood body - very happy with it.
That has got to be one of the best bargains ever.
I was initally hoping there would be some sort of parts store at the Manchester bass day :-/ One make that crops up regularly is a make called Dr Parts, anyone got any experience with them?
I ordered some Dr Parts machine heads to try on my Encore restoration. Really poor quality IMHO. Gold finish was flaking off them and they just felt...nasty. Avoid at all costs mate. I went with Gotoh's in the end, good quality tuners, they'll cost a bit more but they're worth it.
it was a perfect fit no new holes required ,i had a neck i bought from america which on arrival was warped and i cant beleive after all the grief i had with necks this thing slotted straight in and i love the feel of it quite chunky but i like that
I suspected that may have been the case with the neck fitment, i 'm sure i read somewhere that the earlier Encores were made to the exact specifacations of the Fenders that they were copies of.

That looks nice mate, glad to see you've kept the Encore logo on the headstock too. How well did the Encore neck fit into the Fender body?
That looks a decent bit of wood for a budget instrument. No reason that shouldn't sound fine. Nice job!
Just re-read a review of the bass from the nineties, and it seems that the body is medium/heavyweight Indian ash. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...=ENCORE+NATURAL Just as a footnote, i took delivery of my Squier VM Jaguar this week, a bass that i've been really eager to get my hands on, but after a quick play, it's been put back in it's bag for another day, as the Encore just seems to be so much better in terms of both sound, and build quality. I am so glad that i decided to keep this bass and do something with it.

This thread has been priceless, so funny, and what a cab you've got out of it. Any chance of a video diary on the next build?
The annual Mansons Guitar Show is coming up again, on October 23rd & 24th in Exeter. The list of confirmed artists are: John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin/Them Crooked Vultures) again! Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) Jan Akkerman (Focus) Jerry Donahue (Fairport Convention/ The Hellecasters) Michael Manring Alex Hutchings Walter Trout Jas Morris Alex Bershadsky http://www.mansons.co.uk/news/news-item/73.html I'll give it a go on the Sunday as I'm getting some carpets fitted on the Saturday. Not sure who will there on Sunday but will phone Mansons before hand to find out. JPJ was good 2 years ago. Last year Guy Pratt was great. Michael Manring sounds interesting. I'm going to take our 11 year old son who has started on guitar (I know what you're thinking) and got a great second hand Jackson Performer PS-1 from Mansons a few months ago, even I got a bit excited! Who's up for it or not?
I'm looking at going on one of the days, most probably on the Sunday. I know it sounds a bit starry eyed, but does anybody know if JPJ will be signing stuff?

And it's finished, well, bar adding the thumbrest when i get some gold screws. I had to admit defeat and take her to somebody else to get the nut replaced as it needed a custom made one. My local music shop recommend a chap close to me, and what a great guy he was. Crafted and fitted a custom bone nut, carried out a fret dress and gave her a set up, all for the sum of £25 all in, and the work was first class. I'm really pleased with the the way this has turned out. I started out with a bass that i couldn't stand looking at due to it's abused condition, and ended up with a great looking instrument that i like the sound of and enjoy playing. Not sure how close to a "P" it actually sounds, as my untrained ear isn't as receptive to tones as some, but i like it, so i guess that's all that matters (though it would be interesting to hear from somebody more experienced than me on how it sounds and plays compared to a Fender or Squier, any takers?) Here are the last few photo's, they don't really do it justice, but you'll get the idea.
Picked my tickets up yesterday. Ralph in the shop was saying that JPJ will be there this year - just confirmed.
Will he be there on both days?

Hi, just wondering if there was a comprehensive list anywhere online explaining what all the different types of effect are, how they work, and maybe some song references for checking out the different sounds. I know what some basic ones do, distortion, chorus, ect, but what the hell is an envelope filter and why would i want one?
