1.
Hi Si, Can't believe you play The Fox in Palmers Green - that's my old stomping ground from when I was a kid!! Spent many a night in there.. How's it going by the way?? Nik
Hey dude, yeah i'm good cheers, busy putting together my Precision Project (thread in build forum soon). Hows the DJ5? The fox is the worst venue we play, i honestly don't know how they stay open let alone put bands on, literally 50 people or so in that HUGE pub on a saturday night? nuts!. Although its a lot smaller, i prefer Inn On The Green in Palmers Green for crowds. Si p.s. Whos about in Milton Keynes tonight???? Playing in City Limits!
2.
The dumb thing is that if you did the gig once, then the second time she'd probably pay you your normal rate (if I understand what you wrote in your first post correctly).
Or not, theres another post (OBBM was it?) who did a "1st gig" for cheaper, and the landlady told all the surrounding pubs thats what the band charged so no-one would give them more! Si
3. Hey Josh, cheers for the kind words! I'm still glad that we did the swap, its a great bass and was a definite step towards what i'm after compared to the Corvette. I think i can use that typical relationship anecdote here: "Its not the Bass.....ITS ME" lol Cheers Si p.s. Josh is quality to! if anyone ever has to deal with him!
4. Beautiful Lakland, I assume its just a cash sale you want rather then trades?! Just posted my Fender Deluxe up for a possible trade Cheers Si
5. Hey guys So i got this 1998-'99 Deluxe Jazz about 4 months ago, and its a nice bass, light, good nick (one ding on the back, one on the front), but its just not clicking with me, i thought i might drop a J-retro deluxe into it, but it doesn't feel right to me either. I'd hate to spend £200 on a preamp and the bass still not click with me. It comes with Dunlop straplocks and a Fender Hardcase can be included. So I'm putting it out there to see if anyones interested, I'll put up a few pics, i can take more if people want. I'm after another 4 string fretted bass fundamentally, no passive Precisions or MM Subs though, cheers. Brands interested in, but not limited to: Musicman? (Stingray, Sterling) G&L? (USA L2000) Lakland? (JO, DJ or 44-01's/02's (Skylines)) Fender? (Precision Deluxe or USA/Japanese Jazzes) any thoughts/ideas/offers? Cheers Si p.s. its got a new set of Newtone Diamond 40-100's on it, only seen about 4 gigs, and i take care of my strings .

7. I won't do a covers gig for any less then £60 UNLESS: 1) its local 2) i don't have to lug any equipment that isn't mine 3) the others playing are good musicians who i might learn from and have a good time with. 4) I don't have anything else booked I have this policy because i play covers FOR the money, bands generally get treated like poo at these gigs, so i want good payment! I usually get between £60 & £150, and the covers band i work with are great musicians and we all muck in with gear etc, its a good laugh. The band leader always makes sure we're on no less the £60 each and because i live 5 mins from him, i get taken to all the gigs in the van If we're talking originals, then my band is where my heart is and 99% of the gigs i do with First Signs Of Frost none of us take any money. We generally get payed £60-£100 per gig (the whole band) and that goes straight into the kitty for van diesel and merch etc. Other originals i do as a hired bass player i'll generally do for expenses only if i like the material and go from there depending how successful the artist is. If i was going out and doing gigs for next to nothing (£10!!!) then i wouldn't be playing covers, i'd be doing my best to find great original artists and playing for them! Playing covers is a service and as such should be payed accordingly. I know Duos that don't go out for less then £160, let alone full bands, its depressing! Si
8. These are both from a gig we did about 6 months ago at Bar Monsta in Camden. The sound is pretty good for a camera, but make sure you play them through decent speakers or headphones, laptop speakers just aren't gonna handle the low notes. Yes it actually was that dark onstage lol so forgive the odd, as Miles put it, "Opportunity" Enjoy Intro/Finding the Bomb Day Of The Collapse Si p.s. we're actually auditioning for a stand alone singer at the moment, thats why Owen is still playing guitar and doing vocal duties.
9. He was doing a deal a couple of months ago of like two GS112's and a mark bass little mark (250 or 450 i can't remember) for £999 I assume those just went straight out the door! lol Nice rig, will sound awesome i reckon! Si
10. Theres nothing to say you need to tune down for prog, Coheed & Cambria tune to standard i believe. I wouldn't want anything thinner then 45-105 on my C-tuned bass, i was merely highlighting that i could if i chose to because the Newtone high tension strings are so good. I played 5 strings for 3 years or so, both fretted and fretless (matching pair actually), i personally feel that i miss nothing with my 4's, standard or downtuned. Si
11. I'm not sure if my friends Ric is stock or retro-defretted, i'll ask him and see what kinda pics and clips i can get! Si
12. I wish i could grow a beard! I'd have a massive one if i could At the age of 24, i shave often, nothing grows lol anyway Edward, you're more then welcome to watch me play some prog/tech on my 4 Just tune down! And if you are tuning down, its not all about guage, its about the string core size. I use 45-105 on my C,F,Bb,Eb tuned bass, i use Newtone strings and they are able to increase the tension of the string by making the core size bigger. AS a result i play the guages i want (could probly go thinner if i wanted), in a low tuning, with an action similar to a standard tuned bass! Si
13. Early 70's? Can you be any more specific on the year? Si
14. Its definitely between Japanese and USA, i know a lot of people prefer the Japanese, but don't rule out the US ones, there are some really nice ones out there. I got a USA beauty! Si
15.
^ yes - what he said (is there an echo here ?) It wasn't clear from your original question that you had mini-pots already (I'd assumed it was a Fender which would have full size pots). It would certainly be less work to replace like with like.
Yes i wasn't aware that the originals were mini pots to be honest, it didn't really register. It became quite obvious when i saw the replacements at Allparts but thought i'd try them anyway, but they didn't fit in the cavity. So yesterday i went and exchanged the large pots for mini ones, this time i went for log-volume & lin-tone. So everything's ready to be fitted, just waiting for the neck!! Cheers Si
16. Regarding the Proplugs, i use the medium sized non-vented ones and find them just fine! Obviously when i have the money i'll be going for the custom moulded ones, but until then the Proplugs are an alrite fit for my ears, although i do know that some people have real issues with them. Si
17.
i put down a warwick and pick up a rickenbacker!! (hmm, fretless ricky... that's something ive never seen...
My friend has a fretless Ric, i'll see if i can get some pics Yeah cool review! The filter sounds wicked, although i do get scared of loads of controls, its all i can do to convince myself to put a j-retro into my fender deluxe, and this has more knobs then that lol Si
18. So if theres no quality difference, then it would be prudent of me to just exchange the full pots i brought for mini pots to save having to increase the size of the cavity rout! Cheers guys! Si
19. My band is kinda techy, not to much, but enough to be fun and still flow well! I play on a 4 string no problem, but because its heavier music (as is most 'prog') we tune down to C. Most of the techy part of it is different time signatures, sometimes changing every bar etc, lots of unison lines. I do a tiny bit of tapping, in like two songs for 1 verse or something, but because my band has 2 guitars, then theres not much room for stuff like that, so i try and keep my playing supportive and musical (the tapping parts i wrote are when the singer's guitar drops out anyway). We've never done any reading with this band, we learn and write stuff together by jamming, although theres a fair amount of counting while we're getting new passages learnt. Go have a listen at www.myspace.com/firstsignsoffrost Every band is different, just practice the stuff you like and if when you get to uni and find a band whose songs speak to you, then it'll be easy!
Glad to see I'm not the only one who plays like this.
I'm sure 99% of finger players play like this Heres pictures of the 4 string and the 5 string pickups side by side: You're right in that the pickups look the same size on the 4 and 5, but my point is that because theres more space on the 4 string (ie one less string) the overal distance between the top of the pickup where you might anchor your thumb at the E string is quite large. I played an Ibanez Ergodyne a few years ago that had the same problem, felt really weird and basically unplayable to me cos i'm used to the Jazz distance between Pickup and E. Having said that, if you just play with a Pick, u can ignore all that! Si
21. Played with Sikth, Enter Shikari a loada times, Devil Sold His Soul, toured with Exit Ten all with FSOF, again, not top flight stuff, but i've barely started Played with the Bluetones with my old band Tin Soldier. I'm playing on the TV program 'Jimmys Farm' in October, i'll be sure to let you know when it airs lol. Its something to do with Jamie Oliver apparently. A good bass player friend of mine plays for Steve Harley and has just come back off their European tour where they supported the Rolling Stones on two of the gigs. He said Daryl and the guys are really nice! Si
