Warwick - Give me the good, the bad and the ugly.
basshead56 replied to merello's topic in Bass Guitars
This thread is brillant. I have always wanted to know more about warwicks but the only place I can try any is 2hours away and I´ve not been that pushed before. One came up locally for what I gather is a pretty ok price- a bolt on corvette active, under 400 pounds Missed it unfortunately but it seemed pretty alright. May consider one in the future. -
For my money, it´s gotta be either an Ampeg or a Marshall. Ampeg valve monster like an SVT Cl with 610HLF should do enough damage! Failing that, the SVT 4PRO has some seriously thumping sounds in there-perfect for old school and loud, especially run mon-bridged! The Marshall VBA400 is the baddest and most rock-looking amp there is, especially if you use a pair of VBC 412´s as I do! pure thunder with a P Bass and even more so with a T Bird!!! RAWK heaven!

The reason Fenders became so popular...
basshead56 replied to Telebass's topic in General Discussion
To me, the Fender catalogue has always been something of beauty and nostalgia, whereas any of the Gibson ads I´ve seen look boring. Going back to the late 50´s/early 60´s I´m sure pictures of beach parties and surfers holding Strats and P Basses (modern/contemporary designs in keeping with the style of cars etc of the time) were much more appealing to younger generations of musicians than Gibsons ads, showing old blueshawks sitting down noodling on old archtops. And yes, Fender using more machinery, standardised parts and mass production (in different countries) is key to their success story. I think up untill a few years ago, Gibson could command premium prices because of their pedigree-expensive, carefully handcrafted instruments, but they can no longer do so as they too have had to get with the times and begin using more modern building techniques and more cost effective materals etc.It is a shame that Gibson quality has taken such a dive in the last few years, but that is the way of the world. I still think that without Fender or Gibson, the world would be a far less interesting place! -
After many combos and many more stacks, I have to say I do prefer the stack set-up. In terms of combos, I loved the Fender Rumble 100 I had-buckets of headroom and plenty loud down the back! I also had a Trace Elliot GP11 8x10 combo- pain in the backside, but excellent sounding. But nothing beats An Ampeg or Marshall stack-they just move so much more air. The bass should be felt aswell as heard! I just prefer the overall sound of 10´s and 12´s. Even my practise/small gig amp is a stack now! (Micro VR) Like Mani says of the VBA400, it´s trouser-flappin´!

They look a bit like Ampeg SVT PRO series knobs Maybe try LOUD Technologies?

I used to always bring a second bass as back-up, but have never needed it, So now I just bring a Precsion with me and hope I dont pop a string or something like that. I dont see the need to switch between basses at a small/local gig. I think thats more of a Stadium-type thing when guys have roadies and racks of basses to choose from, e.g. Mark Hoppus from Blink182/+44 switches basses after every song or 2- crazy!

Cool. was just wondering which drivers you used. The micro is fantastic. amazing sounding little thing. serious amp! Cheers Drew, Col

My brother drove over my brand new L2000. Help!!!
basshead56 replied to mashup's topic in Bass Guitars
It is either one of two things IMO: 1) The weight of the car on top and pressing down on the bass has caused the intonation to go out. It is possible that the bridge saddles may have been pulled further forward, as well as the increased pressure on the tuning machines, thus causing serious strain. but a setup and possibly new strings may see it working again 2) As above, but the weight has bowed/warped the neck a fair bit. Either way, you will know for sure when the tech has a good look at her. I really hope its just a bridge issue man, honestly. Best of luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too! -
Just don´t try it would be my advice, best not risk your health and the health of your equipment. Invest in a headphone amp (samson or behringer have offerings in the 30quid bracket) and take a line out from your DI output (one of the reasons it´s there in the first place) You should only use headphones in dedicated headphone outputs.

what was the first number you gigged on a bass ?
basshead56 replied to essexbasscat's topic in General Discussion
Halloween night 2000. My first ever gig. We had 3 songs: Screamager by Therapy? Song 2 by Blur Something Against You by Pixies Remember being more nervous than I've ever been in my life (but I still die of nerves before EVERY show) It was over in 10 mins, but playing it felt like an hour! One of the weirdest but happiest nights of my life -
I assume you've had it set up properly for this? The tension on the truss rod will be a lot different which could be part of the problem
+1! Get the bridge and truss rod sorted and all sould be ok, though I always prefer something active or very bright/hot in the pickup department when down tuning, as my passive P basses tend to just sound muddy and confused. Mind you I´ve only had to do it (drop c) twice and both times were in the studio only, so had the bass set up specifically for that purpose.

lets get it on-marvin gaye. its simple, sexy and loads of fun to play.

depending on working condition and cosmetic condition it could be worth anything from 425 to 900 (going by ones I've seen sell on eBay) Hope that helps. PS they are lovely sounding amps! If they had the power of the VBA400, they would be perfect!

Haven´t really owned a bad one. But my first proper bass (a yamaha rbx170-which I still have) was never set up. The intonation was fine, but the action was massively high! Not knowing any better, that´s how I learned to play. That´s really helped with building up my finger strength and db/eub playing though! Still have the original strings on it and its still in the same state iit was when it left the factory, just dustier! I did have an Epiphone EBO for a week, but couldn´t get on with it. It would never hold tuning and sounded very lightweight, so moved it on.

Nice one Drew! Sounds like lke you´re onto a winner there. Thats a bargain, even with the work that needed doing. Are the the drivers 6 or 6.5 inch?
Yes, because I don't like stingrays
+1 Hence why I had my only Stingray for sale/trade within a fortnight of getting it. Pity, cause they look amazing, just not a fan of the sound. Now, if I had the opportunity to trade it for a Black, maple-boarded Sadowsky jazz 5, ala Mr Newsted, I would in a heartbeat! But from looking at the Sadowsky above, I think I would for that too!

Hi guys, a friend of mine is considering moving on his 1976 Fender Jazz. It was oly white, more faded cream now, tort guard. It has the typical bound and blocked rw board, bullet-truss and 3 bolt neck plate. It has had one mod-the pups were swapped out for EMG actives some years ago and so it has had a battery box fitted (looks very well done) The stock pups have vanished. There is no original hardcase either A few chips and dings (eg tiny corner of the pickguard has chipped off where it meets the control plate) and wear marks- fairly common for a bass of this age that´s been gigged week in-week out. Seems to play fine. In terms of weight, its not the lightest (but weighs far less than my ´SID´ 78 Precision!) So what´s a fair price for this lovely bit of lumber? I am not really a fan of Jazzes and know more about P basses, so will leave this to the relevant BC authorities EDIT: description updated

Thinking of trying a new amp (micro/small amp) - From MB to?
basshead56 replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
Ampeg SVT Micro rig? Some great tonal possibilities, really does the SVT sound too and weighs nowt! 200watts using two cabs and has all the ins outs etc you mentioned (headphone out, aux in etc). No mute switch though. Definately the best small rig I have owned or used. -
I have a black 3 ply P-type pckguard lying about u can have Pretty sure there are some spare cables and a tuner lying about too. pm me if you want em
