1. Fender had the earliest model I think, the Bass V but Im pretty sure it was either Yamaha or Ibanez who had the first mass produced five string (early 80´s)-if i remeber my tech´s history lecture rightly
2. Hi, I had one of these for ages. Lovely little things, though if I remember correctly, they are only 65w. I used mine for small pub gigs and it seemed to cope just fine, though most of what we were doing at the time was acoustic guitar-driven. But if you are using a DI and the PA system, it should be more than enough I reckon. I wouldn´t rate them for bigger venues though-definately not enough power.
3. My favourite bass sound is a P bass loaded with Seymour Duncan SPB-3´s! It makes for a really ballsy sound-loads of mid and bottom end, but with plenty of clank. Great if you are playing in a trio!
4. That seems a fairly decent price for a US-built 410HLF, good job I haven´t looked into the availability of secondhand 7PRO´s, but I´m guessing there aren´t too many around, seeing as how they are pretty new to market. Dont give up though, from what I gather, they are well worth it!
5. Why would there be a loss of tone? If anything, it might be slightly better-higher build quality. buy second cabs to keep the cost down (Ampeg have increased in price again recently) and buy USA Ampeg everytime! (eventually the USA made stuff will dry up and become more sought after)
6. Im a total snob. It has to be either Fender or Gibson Seriously though, I´ve tried a few others, Musicman Rays, a SUB, a Daisy Rock (I loved it!), Epiphones, a few Schecters (some great, some awful), a pair of Rickenbackers (not a fan at all-though they look great) and a G&L (l2000). There are loads I´d love to try too though-Shuker, Roscoe, Alleva etc though more so because they come so highly recommended on here. Oh and a Sadowsky Jazz V-have to try one those! Most of what I have wasn´t the cheapest, but all thats really on my GAS list are much cheaper basses: Aria Pro II Cardinal CSB 300/380 (red), Dean Stylist ´Cabbie´, Eastwood Rocket (Any colour) Gretsch Junior Jet, Eastwood classic 4 (White) Hmm, maybe i should´ve started with those instead of all the Fenders.
7. a 70´s black on black maple P Bass? my dream bass! Price seems very good, provided that she´s all original and in good overall condition. I have three 78´s and am currently considering one in New Zealand-my mate´s looking into it for me. Its been refinished in LBP and has Duncan SPB-3´s in it (my favourite pickups!) guy wants around 650 pounds for it (original pups and case included) I think thats about right (and if I go through with it, I wont have to go through bringing one with me!) edit: Cheers Clarky!
8. The 7 PRO and 410hLF would be my top pick from that list. This is due to the fact that I really dislike 3PRO´s-you´re right, they are massively underpowered, or at least they seem to fall well short of their suggested ratings. From the few reviews I´ve read of the 7 PRO, it seems to be great. Very Ampeg sound, loud and lighter than most of the PRO series-what´s not to love? The 410HLF is a gem of a cab! One of the best 410´s on the market IMO. Has everything you need power wise and looks class too! Good luck with your choice man and let us know what you go for, Cheers
9. Thomann already have em for sale. And as far as I can see, most online retailers have listed today as the day of arrival. Anyone been lucky enough to get their mits on one yet?!
10. I did the same with my Fender 400Pro head with the Fender ract tuner that came supplied with it-seeing as I had to swap out the transformer (she was a Yank). My tech spliced in the tuner to the amp and I ran a dual kettle lead. Poifect!

OldGit

I only just got talking to him a few weeks ago (via pm) about shipping and his love of jap fenders. Oldgit only in username, a gent to converse with. A truly lovely guy, really helpful and friendly. My thoughts are with his family, close friends and those BC'ers who had the pleasure of knowing him much better than I did. We'll miss you man
12. I´m pretty sure you´d get a letter in the post from a lawyer asking you to either pay costs or cease performing under the name, considering the original Bazooka Joe (by that, I mean the one from the 70´s) had Adam Ant as the bass player and judging by the fact that he MUST be skint by now, I reckon he´d come after you for a few quid
13. If you fel like selling it on this time next year, let me know Gorgeous looking and sounding amps these. Best thing Ampeg have done in 15years! Let us know how it sounds
14. This thread is brillant. I have always wanted to know more about warwicks but the only place I can try any is 2hours away and I´ve not been that pushed before. One came up locally for what I gather is a pretty ok price- a bolt on corvette active, under 400 pounds Missed it unfortunately but it seemed pretty alright. May consider one in the future.
15. For my money, it´s gotta be either an Ampeg or a Marshall. Ampeg valve monster like an SVT Cl with 610HLF should do enough damage! Failing that, the SVT 4PRO has some seriously thumping sounds in there-perfect for old school and loud, especially run mon-bridged! The Marshall VBA400 is the baddest and most rock-looking amp there is, especially if you use a pair of VBC 412´s as I do! pure thunder with a P Bass and even more so with a T Bird!!! RAWK heaven!
16. To me, the Fender catalogue has always been something of beauty and nostalgia, whereas any of the Gibson ads I´ve seen look boring. Going back to the late 50´s/early 60´s I´m sure pictures of beach parties and surfers holding Strats and P Basses (modern/contemporary designs in keeping with the style of cars etc of the time) were much more appealing to younger generations of musicians than Gibsons ads, showing old blueshawks sitting down noodling on old archtops. And yes, Fender using more machinery, standardised parts and mass production (in different countries) is key to their success story. I think up untill a few years ago, Gibson could command premium prices because of their pedigree-expensive, carefully handcrafted instruments, but they can no longer do so as they too have had to get with the times and begin using more modern building techniques and more cost effective materals etc.It is a shame that Gibson quality has taken such a dive in the last few years, but that is the way of the world. I still think that without Fender or Gibson, the world would be a far less interesting place!
17. After many combos and many more stacks, I have to say I do prefer the stack set-up. In terms of combos, I loved the Fender Rumble 100 I had-buckets of headroom and plenty loud down the back! I also had a Trace Elliot GP11 8x10 combo- pain in the backside, but excellent sounding. But nothing beats An Ampeg or Marshall stack-they just move so much more air. The bass should be felt aswell as heard! I just prefer the overall sound of 10´s and 12´s. Even my practise/small gig amp is a stack now! (Micro VR) Like Mani says of the VBA400, it´s trouser-flappin´!

Knobs

They look a bit like Ampeg SVT PRO series knobs Maybe try LOUD Technologies?
19. I used to always bring a second bass as back-up, but have never needed it, So now I just bring a Precsion with me and hope I dont pop a string or something like that. I dont see the need to switch between basses at a small/local gig. I think thats more of a Stadium-type thing when guys have roadies and racks of basses to choose from, e.g. Mark Hoppus from Blink182/+44 switches basses after every song or 2- crazy!
20. Cool. was just wondering which drivers you used. The micro is fantastic. amazing sounding little thing. serious amp! Cheers Drew, Col
21. It is either one of two things IMO: 1) The weight of the car on top and pressing down on the bass has caused the intonation to go out. It is possible that the bridge saddles may have been pulled further forward, as well as the increased pressure on the tuning machines, thus causing serious strain. but a setup and possibly new strings may see it working again 2) As above, but the weight has bowed/warped the neck a fair bit. Either way, you will know for sure when the tech has a good look at her. I really hope its just a bridge issue man, honestly. Best of luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too!
22. Just don´t try it would be my advice, best not risk your health and the health of your equipment. Invest in a headphone amp (samson or behringer have offerings in the 30quid bracket) and take a line out from your DI output (one of the reasons it´s there in the first place) You should only use headphones in dedicated headphone outputs.
23. Halloween night 2000. My first ever gig. We had 3 songs: Screamager by Therapy? Song 2 by Blur Something Against You by Pixies Remember being more nervous than I've ever been in my life (but I still die of nerves before EVERY show) It was over in 10 mins, but playing it felt like an hour! One of the weirdest but happiest nights of my life
24.
I assume you've had it set up properly for this? The tension on the truss rod will be a lot different which could be part of the problem
+1! Get the bridge and truss rod sorted and all sould be ok, though I always prefer something active or very bright/hot in the pickup department when down tuning, as my passive P basses tend to just sound muddy and confused. Mind you I´ve only had to do it (drop c) twice and both times were in the studio only, so had the bass set up specifically for that purpose.
