That Jazz through that rig sounds the beans... As for which cabs.... love that 610, but 2 110' sounds a great idea. It will stack higher and be a true mini-stack but 250 might be running out of steam..it would for me, anyway...so even though I always favour 10's...I think I'd go 2x112 for your purposes. for that little bit extra. Seems a nice little problem though.

WoT have I done? New bass arrives this Thursday...

?? ...it ain't a Fender -
Personally, I don't think a 112 is enough for anything but quiet practices myself... and they wouldn't work for me, so I am always prepared to run two. since you don't drive.... man-handling 2 x 112's doesn't seems a good idea to me so you may be forced to go 212. You may be lucky in that your situation might work with a 112 and it would be a cheaper entry with the choice to add another later. If you don't gig atm..then this route makes sense. 2 12's are better but your options of moving them don't make this easy

The real smoothie in that band was the drummer Phil Gould, I lost count how many really good drummers..IMO...always rated his understated approach. I like Mark King's fingerstyle.. again, much underrated.

On board Bass preamps with switchable Bass frequencies?
JTUK replied to Dood's topic in Accessories and Misc
[sup]Shack used to do one where you could reset almost anything you like....right across the range, but you would have to have the back off ..and not something you could/would do mid song so not a sweep as such[/sup] [sup]tbh...It was too much choice and it could get confusing unless you were VERY methodical about your settings.[/sup] [sup]I wouldn't say this was a drop in pre either...[/sup] -
Couldn't recommend any particular make myself but I think the bass needs to be really well put together for it to sing well in the higher register and especially on the lower strings. It shouldn't be beyond makers of decent basses..but it sometimes actually is..IMO.. so it is going to be a bit of leg work for you to find one, I'm afraid. Maybe you can cut down the choices somewhat if you decide whether you MUST have 24 frets.. You will certainly have to get out there and play them... It is like 5 strings and their B's... you can't take much for granted, IMV

To be really comfortable on it..everything has to all to hand and be in the right place. The neck isn't a problem being wider,, AFAIC, it is the spacing between strings at the RH....with the type of things that you just do..rather than have to think about. It is all about accuracy and speed and that takes the time to set yourself up. I sat in on a guys 4 st fretless the other day and I HATED it with a passion... Forget whether the bass was any good..it just didn't suit and I couldn't wait to put the thing down ..and that was just a run ofthe mile jam type sit-in.. I wished I hadn't bothered but got goaded into it, tbf. For that reason alone, I wouldn't contemplate going back...and 4 strings don't seem right to me anymore. I don't care what other peoples preferences are, they can answer for that themselves.

[sup]Hmmm.... I have yet to come across any cab which I didn't think I could break ( the speaker) if I allowed things to get out of hand.[/sup] [sup]I have two amps here, rated at 400 and 550 watts... anyone want to send me a couple to 'test'.. ????[/sup]

I would hope I would have a pretty good idea about the condition before I got in the car...and I would be very suspicous if there were no pics. If I couldn't satisfy myseff that this was a good idea,..and 2 hour drive is no fun for a wild goose chase... I would quickly loose interest and let it go. Sympathise with you for getting a couple of time-wasters.
-
It is ALL about the low B...if that is average then the bass is pretty much a write-off AFAIC... You'll need a decent budget or will have to know exactly what you are looking for... or get very lucky as a decent B isn't a given on more that a few respected makers, IME.. Also, unless you are hearing things that you could do on a 5 and it is a must-have....the change-over can take a very long time to feel really comfortable.

We play a local Beer and Music fest and the camping part is a lot of fun..if the weather is good and the tents are properly sorted. But also, it isn't too far to pop home either... If you do the gig and treat it as audition in front of a decent amount of people and agents, and then are prepared for the follow-up..which may well be that your gigs come from all-over, I can see that it is worth it as a loss-leader. If you aren't prepared to do that..then there seems little point. Depending how far it is for you to travel...you should at least get/ask petrol exes..
-
Put it down to experience that you dealt with an idiot packing-wise. Tell the story in feedback and walk away thinking it could have been a whole lot worse dealing with a guy like that.
-
I don't get this.... they charge those sort of prices and you don't get paid..?? I can't believe the entire bill is not paid... but don't know what the bill is likely to be either.. You need to sit down and decide what you can/might get out of it and then decide if it is worth it to you.
are we talking original bands ? Never been asked this with any covers band I've played with
Cover bands. When we first formed we were asked a lot. Most of the units I was out with before, I never gave gigs a second thought, if I was available, I'd do them, so actually hassling for gigs was completely alien. Once you get a foot in and do well enough, you have pubs coming to you, but getting gigs in 2011 is a completely different set of rules, venues, landlords.

hmmm. . I hate these corporate moves... and if bean counters get near production, then..????? Oh well, Things have moved on since Eden were top of the pile, anyway. Ditto SWR.

I don't need anything. Very happy with the basses and no 1 rig. Might swap out a few things ( cabs) for no 2... but only if the right thing at the right price appears.

The answer to back pain/back ache from gigging/bass guitars?!
JTUK replied to Musicman20's topic in General Discussion
Well, I am over weight and unfit I have had two operations on my spine and two on my right knee. At rehearsal last week, after three hours of standing, playing the bass (not forgetting I have been an acoustic guitarist for many years!) my back was on fire! I think that I should loose some weight and get fitter if I am going to gig a 10lb bass!
You've had that medical attention and no one has pointed out how you can manage your back for the future..?? I am not sure I would want to be in their care, tbh...!! -
Looks very clean to me... looks like exactly what you are after..??

The answer to back pain/back ache from gigging/bass guitars?!
JTUK replied to Musicman20's topic in General Discussion
It is all about the core.... keeping that in shape is a must. You might want to help yourself with a decent mattress, lighter kit, not gigging for more that 2 hrs etc but it will amount to not much at all, if you don't work on keeping your core exercised. I've 'managed' 2 prolapsed discs for over 20 years with few relapses because a very good physio retrained my core. She said that most peoples backs have lost the strenght and agility though daily living..pretty much. I don't go looking for heavy lifts but neither do I feel the need to shy away from them. My heavier cabs are 60 plus lbs and they are no problem if approached properly. If you don't work on this, then you are an incident waiting to happen, IMO. -
My reasoning is the magnet position is fixed and the coil and cone will 'travel'..if the coil overheated or does not travel back and forth on line, then either the cone suspension is shot and distorts the travel or the coil has fried or ruptured or however you wish to describe it..and therefore rubs up against the magnet.
I've never had a pub ask if we have an audience when I'm talking to them about bookings.... unless you are on about original material.... in which case it's probably more relevant
When was the last time you tried to sell a new band venture to a pub that might not have heard of you...? I'd think it is quite a pertinent question. Basically, the LL will want you to fill his pub... he will have his regulars but he will want a band to bring 20-30.

HELP PLEASE! Best small lightweight cab to go with an Ampeg SVT III Pro
JTUK replied to nickhuge's topic in Amps and Cabs
I am pairing the 10's I have now against a variety of 12's.... and I include Vanderkly, Epi, GB and a few others in the 12 generalisation. -
Ooof, even for an 'IME' that's a sweeping generalisation and to use the term 'slay'! I've owned and tried some very good 2x10 cabs and I've also owned and tried similarly good 1x12 cabs and I'd not be so confident in making that statement; there are 1x12 cabs available that are easily the equal of the 2x10 cabs.
And I'll be trying to find them... but my 2x210's walk all over the 2x112's. I wouldn't use them singularly and I love the footprint of the 12's..and also need that at times...and the low end is better, or rather bigger, but that isn't something I need in the context of the band. And I wouldn't say the 2x210's are light in that area anyway..just the 12's are probably bordering on excessive. Where the 10's score massivley is the precision and cut in the higher mids. The 12's don't have this clout..and I'll need to EQ it in..whereas the 10's don't need it..at all. I'll continue to search for single 12's and use them paired and see if I can close the gap, but IMO, it is a BIG gap. Also, to get the kind of bite I want, the 12's can only compete when with a new set of strings..and then the sound is very pleasing..but I can't be doing with liveing up a pr of cabs with strings changes all the time It isn't the low-end that is the problem it is the clarity and definition higher up and both have tweeters as well. . The 2x210 is my fave config..and as close to the 410 sound I prefer without the weight. I consider 2x12 the compromise. One that can work, of course, but a compromise all the same, Basically, I think if you tune the cab too low you suffer elsewhere. -
Precision vs Jazz vs Warwick vs other Precision
JTUK replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Bass Guitars
I think the Jazz sounded better in that track... nothing really gets me about the rest, tbh. I think if you swapped around with the playing style, you'd really have to go to work on a sound/bass that could cover both..or swap basses for those respective styles. I guess what I am trying to say, if you play pick AND fingers, the J is the most versatile..which is what we'd all expect anyway.
