1. yep..whole package for me. I couldn't have any kit that I didn't rate... ideally..and it would have to be visually and audio-ally satifisying as well. Then comes build..etc etc...so the whole package, really. Right or wrong, I don't care much..but it is how I view pretty every major purchase, certainly houses, cars and bass stuff.
2. A good post. It is good that a few unknown makees..to our market.. are brought to our attention. Since you raised the Glockenglang comparison, they look similar and suitably germanic..?? Not so sure about the styling myself from the pictures.. but there you go. Thanks for the info
3. A DB210 and a DB212...is a 350 and 600watt coupling which doesn't make a great deal of sense to me, but I guess it would work, no problems. I use 2xDB210 and the sound is earth shaking and as loud as my uses go and don't see the need to add 12" into the mix. I think if you like 12's then pair them up.. I prefer my 10's to my 12's as the sound is livelier all round, IMO.
4. A silly or useless generalisation from me would be that I'd expect the Barts to more subtle and a sound you'd grow to really appreciate in certains sitautions..recording, being an obvious one, and the EMG's being more immediately in your face and aggressive and having their uses live. Barts would be up there for me... but I don't think therre can be an defintive answer for your style until YOU power them up. Typically..I never get why people want really pokey pickups at the expense of say, character in the sound. If you want more poke, use the amp. Simplistic, admittedly, but a more powerful pickup isn't obviously a better sounding one, far from it, IME
5. I can just about watch him live...but that is courtesy of a decent band and a great back catalogue. I can fully understand kids of today not knowing or wanting know anything about him though, but sooner or later, if you are relatively serious about music, you will come across his stuff. Personally, I thought it was the Beatles and all downhill from there, but who cares..? Obviously, not many younger kids..they have their own heroes, for good or bad. We have this kind of debate every year.. and I don't see why he MUST be relevant. He either is or he isn't to certain people
6. Horror stories..... We have said it many times before, if the other band does not have the courtesy of advance notice..ie the bass player calls you personally to ask..and therefore you gauge from that contact what you want to do..., then it is not your fault he arrives at a gig unable to fulfil his duties.... Also, I think you should be telling the promoter who you want on the bill..ideally
7. Groove metal..??? good luck on both counts. But if you have put in the work, then there isn't much else you can do.. maybe you need to connect with them personally but that will depdnd if you can like the guys. Just be yourself and do your best As I said, best of luck
8.
Would be interested in hearing how you get on with the NEO 210. I remember you saying how great the Eden was with the Reidmar so if the Neo 210 is a winner then it must be good. My Classic 112 with the Reidmar sounds awsome, still blown away with it. Keep us posted.
It that with 1 or 2 112 cabs? have to say..looks the DB's in the pics
9. agree..that you have to look VERY closely. And I did look pretty closely at the Sadowsky and I remain shocked. If I am right about it being a stick-on..and I'm 95% sure I am, then that is not on on a nearly £2000 bass..!! Black blocks are harder to determine, as well, admittedly.
10. DR do HI Beams witha tapered B.... can't recall about the E. Newtone will do custom winds on anything ...but default B and E to T-core. La Bella do Super steps that are tapered on all strings.
11. hmmm... no. I wouldn't want stick-ons myself. I recall seeing a Sadowsky in gtr/gtr with black stick-ons .... horrible. Not a fan of the black blocks anyway...but that shocked me..!!
12. Depends what sort of sound you are after... Basically, expect the MTD to sound more modern and the Jazz...obviously, to sound the more traditional. Also, I'd expect the MTD to have more sound variation between models/configs so you will need to know and like that variation. I did the modern tone thing and thankfully went back to the J sound. It depends what you play and want to play..IMO.
13. I would not like to take your own monitors as the P.A co can get a bit liberal with what they put through them if they can't provide to a decent spec, I don't know why you would use them as a company, personally As regards Thessalonika...I hope their stagecraft is better than my last time there... Anything out of Athens can be a bit hit and miss, IME..!! I'd insist on a full technical rider if at all possible.
14. I think 4 mixes is good... it is whether the boxes can take what is required. This is why you still need your bigger rig as per the stage size UNLESS you know the company can deliver. I always have a wry smile when I see the bass rock up with a single 12 or combo... and then finds out his sound can't cover the stage sound and the monitors will always sacrifice bass first. I let them fight it out as I know I can flood the stages I play on..if I have to.
15.
We're very low key
us too...we have had to pull out of Faversham completely... say hi to Bob F if you see him. He said he would call me about a gig ha ha !! bless him
16.
All these have happened to me recently: The singer's buggered off to Bulgaria to sell timeshare apartments without telling anybody The porn studio next door has complained about the noise The drummer's headbutted the tailgate of his car and has had to go to A&E The rehearsal barn has nesting bats and we can't disturb them The lead guitarist has injured himself taking down some shelves What has everybody else had to put up with? Steve
classic
17.
I saw Caravan playing in a school hall (when I say school, I mean The King's School - it's old) last Autumn. The line-up is frontman Pye Hastings who's been there forever, Geoffrey Richardson on viola, guitar, spoons etc who's a long-time member. Original drummer Richard Coughlan has had to retire recently due to poor health to be replaced by Mark Walker (also can be seen in Rolf Harris's touring band); Jan Schelhaas and Jim Leverton on keys and bass are relative newcomers (ie within the last 10-20 years) They're doing another Canterbury gig very soon: see http://www.caravan-i...rockweekend2012 There's some great pubs in the area as well
Thanks I knew Richard was inactive as you hardly see him in the pub these days. JL and JR are out and about Don't know the other guys.
18.
I'm using Ken Smith TCRML-5's (Taper Core-Medium Light .044 .063 .080T .102T .125T). Also hex core strings tend to feel tighter / stiffer I find.
NIce strings ... To the OP... give Newtone a call and see what they suggest. Very helpful and make custom sets altho there is a wating list. Best strings for me atm....and I've tried most...recently, as well. I would also suggest that it is not a given that a Fender would have a good B anyway... so it may be that strings can only help so far. If the problem is tension, you might get round it...if it is tone/resonance, you may not..!!
19.
There is a current Canterbury scene also
So, when you playing next? Must admit, Canterbury has always seemed out on a limb regarding gigs round here. Hardly ever get to play it. As far as I know...CAravan had some dates lined up but a few stalwarts aren't/can't do them, so not sure who the band line-up is. I guess I should visit a few pubs round there
20. I tend to find some of the cheaeper plastic cases warp a tad... not enough to be unusable...just that they aren't that great a product, IMO. Cheap Chinese tat that does a job...just..!!
21. I know/knew of a place selling a TE210 combo and a Ashdown115 combo..both around £250...in Kent as well, last time I looked. ext cab and they would produce 300w plus, IIRC.. I can't make out why they are still there.
22. It ain't happening... no gig, no work-thro...once I'd stopped laughing..!! I'd have had to tell him within the first 5 mins that this was not going to work and wish him the best of luck with it.
23. It cross my mind to do this song. This and 'dude' can be a slamming song... gone off the idea now..!! would only fit one or two types of gig anyway
24. I have to say...why would people put up with a sound that they couldn't really hear or defines anything...? If it is mud to you, then you can be pretty sure it is even more mush outfront. I just don't get that at all... if your playing is unclean, you'd want to know..!! You can dirty something up easily...you can't do it the other way round..IME. And that playback solo'd in the studio will be a REAL nasty shock...!!!
25. If they are not for you, they are not for you. No one has the defintive lines on these sorts of things... it is all a preferene. I say that as a confirmed Aguilar user atm. Personally, the GS has too much bass for me and I have to dial in some snap. The DB is much more harder hitting for my tastes...but I think their product line..tmk..is pretty rounded and they make very good cabs,.
