1.
Quite. In the UK some clubs will only book through an agent but bar/pub gigs at the lower level are done band to landlord. The instance I'm quoting is an agent who approached us last minute for a private party. The O/P is talking about a promoter. Traditionally these are very shady characters full of promises and lacking in delivery. There are good ones though.
Strangely enough, around here, there are quite a few agents doing a few pub gigs. I don't see it myself, but I've had a few calls...and I just give them the price to the band.
2. Cadavers.. ?? FFS..only saw two tracks and they were pretty woeful..
3. BBC2 ... Thought the Johnny Cage band had something. Only seen a couple of the bands..so haven't really seen what they are after.
4. The whole band should have walked and called out the shambles... I wasn't there but people like this shouldn't be in business. If you are desperate to play gigs and put up with this..expect a queue of like minded people lining up to do the same. Things don't get better if this is the standard of the way people work..IMO. I'd be wanting to know what the others guys were thinking... and wanting an explaination.
5. Tend to plan and pace the set... so two from the same artist would be kept apart...and if playing 2 sets, 1 in each. Where they went in that set would then depend on how we wanted to pace that set. We wouldn't just pluck them out of thin air or memory. If you do gigs that are not in pubs, this is even more important... which is why we get in the regime of pacing the whole thing. Obviously there are certain songs you pick to do as they are starters, middle songs and closers etc etc
6.
No. The whole band should have left.
This....
7. I'd look at the Aguilar line-up because I think their tone bias on the amps is not too toppy...and if they carry that into a brand concept for the pickups then they'll be worth a look. There is a pretty good you tube link which showcases 4 Aguilar J pickups
8. Only 2 by the same artist in the entire gig and never together.
9. No, but if you like these cabs, I think you'd like the TKS S112's better...or at least put them in the equation. BassGear would have both, I reckon.
10.
Less variables, less chance my other effects reacting strangely to the PA, more likely the tone that suits the band will cut through. less mucking around time trying to get the amp sounding just right. Lots of reasons.
But how would you know if the P.A wasn't engr'd... and even if it was... how would you know he didn't alter your send? The only way you'd really know is if you had spec'd the sound and the Engr knew exactly what you wanted.. and had good reason to stick that brief..?
11.
I think you may be missing the point of preamp pedals. The preamp pedal is set the same, for all occasions. The amp? Well that is adjusted to suit it's purpose in the situation it is in, similarly a PA would be adjusted if you went amp less. The core tone of your sound comes from the always on preamp pedal, which remains a constant in all situations. It's similar to your active basses. Certainly for me, the settings on my basses are not altered, I will alter the preamp usually. I find a setting I like and stick to it.
Why would you change the amp ...I can't recall the last time I've altered the amp EQ on gig... so therefore it does the same job as the pre-amp. My amps produce a better signal than a lot of pedals, I'm pretty sure, the DI is better and/or you use a didicated DI box. So, from my point of view and in answer to the OP, I would not want a pre amp pedal on all the time.... and I really wouldn't want one at all. If I wanted a high quality signal into a desk, I'd either go DI stage box and get a mon mix back to me if the stage had a Mon engr, or I'd have a good quality rack type pre amp. But thats just me..
12.
But as I've said and others have said, using the same amp every gig and rehearsal isn't possible for every one. If you want the exact same tone hitting foh wherever you play then a preamp pedal is an easy way to do it. Seems logical to me.
And how would you control what came out of FOH..because if you can't do that...what is the point of giving them exact same tone..? And if you were that particular, why would you use a pedal... because most are on the cheaper side of things?
13.
What brings you to that conclusion? It seems quite reasonable to me to have one on all the time.
Because you have an amp for that and any decent should be able to outperform a pedal
14.
What a difference the band makes. . . . . . .
Indeed.... rescues it, IMO.
15. If that rig doesn't sound absolutely monstrous, you'll need butt***** Great amps from yesteryear but like classic Eden's, will still do the job AND some. ( One of the best rigs I've come across these last few years was an Eden WT and XLT cabs. which might have been nearly 20 years old in design but still was the mutt's..) And TKS cabs..well, IMO..the guy has a very educated ear and knows what he wants out of his designs. Good call, nice rig.
16. The part is not a very disciplined part .... so pick up a few key sections and riff it to death. You'll not likely find one version the same as the other anyway so as long as you stay in key, you'll be fine. Oh.. and as is good practice, IMO.. avoid open strings as much as poss
17. I'm of the opinion you've got it wrong if you have a pre amp patched in 'on' full time. Having said that, my basses have onboard pre amps and I have default settings on all.... plus I hardly ever ever touch the amp apart from volume. I tend to keep it simple and clean and work on hand position for the variations I'm looking for.
18. I was hoping this would be an onboard...but I've bought a Glock instead now anyway.
19. Tone is one thing, gain is another so as long as you have enough gain in hand, I'm not a fan of pushing EQ..and certainly not from a graphic type set up. IIRC, on my amps, all controls are between 10-2 as per a clock dial, with bass at 10, and treble andmids betweek 1 and 2. This could be regarded as very peaky and bright and it probably is...but that depends on the amp. What I practice at home with wont likely survive at a gig, but it wont be that far off.. and I enjoy the 'discipline'
20. If it is not working, fix it, If you don't or can't fix it..and poor players arent fixable, IMO then move on. You don't have to fall out with people you would rather not play with. They'll probably know anyway. You can word these things politely. Worst situation is not knowing what is wrong in the first place..or not really caring.
21.
....................... Did you really have to start another Barefaced thread though
22. Being a mechanical action, I'd say they have a life... which tends to be why I don't really want bespoke chassis'. Having said that 20 years should be easily acheivable if temp changes weren't in the equation.
23.
So many good basses in that price point from Yamaha, Fender, Ibanez and more recently Maruszcyk (I think that's right) I'd probably get a custom from Maruszcyk or a couple of Classic Vibe Squires if I needed more than one and have some change left over
You'd have to know whay you wanted from a bass, and you'd really need to be a fender guy, but I'd check out Maruszcyk for a little over your top budget.
24.
Also - the frets are officially medium-jumbo, going by the Fender website.
Will have nothing to do with it, IMO. Clack is because you are putting too much into the string for the action of the bass. A more refined touch will deal with that .... but if you don't want that..then the way to tidy that up is to raise the action.
25.
I think its a risk of the newer text/messaging culture - you just assume people have read/seen the message and can't be bothered to get in touch. I'm pretty certain that anyone who's living depends on selling anything would be pretty hot on following things through...... i gave my 12year old lad a roasting the other day for not replying to a text from me (just one about collecting him from school) - he insisted he hadn't received it and it came through as we were talking - he genuinely hadn't received it. You can't beat the old school method of actually talking to people....
In this day of comms, people forget to talk. If it is really important, I'd be on the phone. Every day at work will tell you that, IMO. Having said that, if the shop has poor comms, get down to BassDirect if you are north of Birmingham.
