1. I can normally tell in an instant whether I'll like the drummer... a single roll is normally enough for me, IME.
2. You get gigs because you are a known entity in yourself, I think. The band leader needs to like you and they may like what you both bring if they consider you a unit... but sometimes I doubt they can be so picky. They take the date and then fit a band round it and who is available....
3. You can spread this thread a little further. When looking for deps do you go for the one with a first class degree or do you want to know what they actually can do. I find you can't necessarily take the qualifications as meaning anything really tangible, ...so you go with who you know or who recommended them... and then if you trust that reference...??
4. Why don't you just ask them to supply it in the rider.. you aren't taking a cab are you?
5. All of the above bar tapes....
6. Guy Pratt is a member here...ask him..??
7. We want to replace KW12 with DXR10 plus a DSR112 and this is for carry as much as anything else..plus we want kick and keys thru it which the KW's could handle in smaller places.
8. Lots of yes's... If the Gtr wants a sub he can carry it... that will possibly negate him turning up too late to do any of the chores. You could be kind to him and get him a lighter weight one.. I'd look at the EV range... they do some pokey 12"... The Yam DSR112 or 115 are good. But if you are only using one...be reasonable what you expect from it... If you want to put the band through it.. you'll need a good 15 or pref 18... but if you want just a bit of heft/support then a quality pokey 12 might just help with seperation..
9. You'd have to try yours with bass in it... but I'd be guessing they'd be pretty useless for that if they are on par with the Mackie ..
10. I think the Mackie is a Behringer or vice versa... and this also applies to some of their other kit at this price point, IMO but..... we use the Mackie version and they do ok. You could say cheap and nasty but we had ours repaired under warranty so they remain in use and do an ok job for Vox only. We drive them in line with powered floor mons when space is an issue and they are very directional which is to be expected. Good for vox monitors...and nothing else, but they do it ok...
11. Don't worry about it as a break can be a good thing. I stopped for about 18 months and didn't miss it at all...but I didn't sell any of my gear. I just stored it properly and got on with other things. When I got my enthusiasm back, ( which I didn't know if I would ) I worked out that I was burnt out taking all sorts of crap gigs so I decided I wouldn't do that again.. I am now back stronger and better and I realised how much I was coasting back then.. I don't get into situations like that again that can lead me to the same conclusion.. It's a set back... but you'll play or not, when you want to..
12. No.... plenty of groups on FB that seem to do ok ... so if people you know don't know of anyone, I go a bit wider...
13.
wonder what drummers say about bass players?
It helps if they rate you.....
14. [sup]Liked Bryan Ferry who can rock it. [/sup] [sup]If you are going to have Douggie up on stage, lets hear him and we sure did.[/sup] [sup]Mind you, needed two Ashdowns ( 1 spare ) [/sup] [sup]No Andy Newmark tho... [/sup] [sup]Enjoyed it...[/sup]
15. Depends who is asking.... I like the magic of one nighters but then they want to do them again and you never know the line-up. It is better to have that one sorted band to get away from the cliches..??
16. Am surprised but reading the 3 weeks rehearsal and go from there thing suggests that they need to know how it may work...or not..!! I guess he doesn't need the money so its fun and it works or not..?? I was watching his Soul revue gig and that was pretty painful... but then that stuff really does expose any weaknesses in a voice, IMO
17. The reason is because people don't have a collective band sound..they have their sounds and then hit the brick wall of sound. Far better to mix everyone and find where you can settle rather than push.... You should be able to hear the dynamic range of a bass as much as any other instrument...IMO. You don't want to be burying anything...but you need the others to let you have that space.. and often they don't... either thru ignorance or arrogance.
18. Tbf, Debbie Harry never had a voice to lose but her inability to sing the songs has worsened these last few years. At least someone like Phil Collins realised and had enough money to pull the plug...
19. I've always needed power as I don't put much input into the signal compared to most... This way I don't have to drive/cane the amp andway/anyhow just to get level and my sound has improved immensely.
20.
Spot on JT. I`d also add to this the ability to do all that at the volume that`s right for the stage/room. Some can only play at the same volume no matter where they are. Destroys them in my view, being over-loud with no ability to rectify the situation.
I do have some sympathy with level tho, Lozz as some players are used to stages or studio where constant level of strike is paramount and they don't/didn't have to cram into tiny places where the volume can't escape. We are never going to be a quiet band but we always try to have a balance and a mix so I'll come upto the drummer and the rest play to me. That does rule out a few places but then they are too small for other reasons as well.
21. See, I don't go along with that.... as long as he can play them and make them sound good then I don't mind a larger kit. Of course, getting them into the Dog and Duck takes a bit of common sense about what is required, but as long as the guy is musical..and therefore that is the REAL crunch, IMO, he can take in what he wants, We have a guy who will change round his cymbal set-up as it keeps him on his toes, but then he has super hand speed and this is just something to change things up... doesn't make a bit of difference to musicality in the songs. He can basically hit what he wants anyway, anyhow, anytime...
22. Local 'legends' round here have Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, AC/DC, Texas, Take That and a gazillion others on their CV's so there is no chance that one of them wouldn't fit your bill...
23. Paulino N...good show. Enjoyed most tonight and will probably stay in for the rest...
24. Time, tempo, groove and killer chops... and the nous to know when to do it.
25.
Undisputed champ so far is the lady from Haim.
yep...quite laughable. Totally destroys them, IMO
