1. £1000 is no given that you'll get a good bass. You can do it for that..certainly second hand, but you have to be careful. No way would I spend £1k online without seeing and playing it... so I'd trawl the specialist bass shops like the Gallery and BassGear and also keep an eye on what shops like GAK do on trade-ins. I'd be on a few mailing lists if you have anything specific in mind
2. Might be a question of tension in the strings, but assuming the bass has a decent neck I think it should be easy to set up with a low action. Don't know what your technique is like but the quieter and more precise it is, the easier it is to get away with a low action.
3. Just ordered DXR12s and DSR12 subs. I think it will be ok for small medium gigs with a loud band with keys and kick in it.
4. I think they are infinitely better than off the shelf plugs, but not sure where they get a £160 price tag justification, myself. Simple moulds, simple attentuator ...??
5. No pics..??
6.
Which brand(s)?
I'm using Aguilar DB cabs.... I think they are fine sounding cabs and speak very well. I am not sure the chassis' are anything too special on paper but I think they don't need to be. I also think they have gone up in price recently.. not sure why that is but not an issue in so far as I don't plan to sell them soon. I far prefer these cabs to Berg AE112 which I also have. More likely to sell them sooner...
7. I am currently in favour of a 212 and 210 on top. I run the 212 at 4 and the 210 at 8..but can add another 210 if I want/need to.. and I haven't so far. This rig will produce around 800/950w but I doubt I'll get aware near that and the cabs fill so that is a lot of bass to control. I like the slamming element of the 212 plus the cut of the 210.. I'll have the horns on at least half and I'll be hearing some back through the monitors and P.A but the size of the rig means it will do most of the work for me. Various fills will spread it around abit but I don't need big bass through the monitors and the Sound guys appreciate that... A very common mistake I hear time and time again ( so often it is ridiculous ) is that the bass is loud enough but doesn't drive the band at all. I can pin this down to the basses they use and how they EQ them, but the bottom line is bass should underpin the band and people are so concerned with cutting through the mix... the forget that they should actually have the whole mix sitting on their foundations..and it really shouldn't be mush.. This is why small cabs can run out of steam... in that you EQ them to be heard rather than do the job they really should be for. If you are a powerful band and drums will probably determine this, then you'll need your cab to reach the other side of the stage so your band can hear it..and feel it .and play to it.. and not have a honky squalk.. A decent soundman will not mind power, he will mind any problems that come with it...so this is why you want a loud cab which is there, but not too much THERE that he can't control it. But, it is easier for him to have the bass player playing through a tin can as he doesn't have to deal with that and it wont get out front which is what he mostly cares about. Doesn't always help the band tho.... The default stance tends to be if the band don't know what they are doing... the soundman will make it easy for himself at least and little boxes suit him fine. Most drummers now want a 'kicker' on any sort of stage as it helps them get the whole band stage vibe... and if you hear/feel better, you'll more than likely play better.
8. We have tried a few cheaper subs and they didn't sound very good. The Mackie Thump was big heavy and just plain awful... indistinct mush sound. But then we didn't rate K subs much for the money either... For a budget, look at e bay EV or RCF... but as with all these things, you'll want to hear it. And you better sell the idea to the gtr as there aren't many cheap, small and light subs around.. so if you buy cheap, they aren't going to be small and light... Maybe there are a few DIY subs around from BFM which might be good value..?? Ask mrcat..??
9.
Can you post your current typical set so we can see how 'different' a successful gigging band can be?
It is more how you play the set and we are a 5 piece with Keys but here are a few Woodcutters son. Life During Wartime. Middle of the Road Good Souls.. Grounds for Divorce More well known. Sympathy for the Devil 5:15 Human

JBL 612 passives are pretty good. HK pro 15 at £288 per cab seem a starting point reference altho HK aren't the name they were and I've heard lots of issues with various models based around the horn and x-over plate.. Just a cheapy design subject to a few breakages... We tried the 12pro and didn't like it but we had other issues with the P.A so unfair to put all the balme on the way we used the monitor.. but a active Wharfedale which are also cheap as chips, performed far better.. I think at a certain pricepoint, then warranty becomes more of a factor as wel so be careful where you get them and where you may have to send them back...
11. Just to muddle the waters a bit more... I ran a DB212 plus DB210 with a 750 last night and it reconfirmed my opinion that this is a great modular rig. The 212 carries the big bass and the 210 adds bite at a nice height level. The 210 carries that peakiness into the stage area for the rest of the band as well. Loved it and the carry is ok for non crewed gigs as well. Bonus.
12.
Mid 90s? most cover bands haven't even got to the 90s yet!
yes.... agree, A bit lame really, same same same...
13.
Thanks, we get enough gigs and don't really need a lot more promo material. It's to catalogue the work we have done.
A good live gig recording works for me best in this regard altho we have a studio booked for originals but the budget isn't the issue, it is time... The bass and drums will be live within a band context and then they can come in and brush up their parts ... but only to re-do a solo maybe, or fine-tune BV's. I expect to be done in half a day and that suits me. I get more satisfaction from a Zoom recording at a live gig when we are cooking, tbh
14. I might have missed this... but what is the point of the recording..?? If an album to sell at gigs..then yes, consider embellishing it so it is something different from what people hear at gigs. It really helps if you freshen up tracks like that and it is hard work to change things around if you play the same numbers all the time. We revise numbers or leave them out so long that when we come back to them...they sound different because we aren't concerned how we used to do them or have even forgotten how... so we basically have to relearn them. Doesn't work well if the band plays by numbers though... If the album is to get gigs, then I am not much a fan of a produced set of songs that bear no relation to how you will sound live. We keep recorded versions on our website to a minimum and only the originals are 'produced'.. Generally, I don't think it is a good idea to let people loose in a recording studio and certainly not left to their own devices..and certainly not vain gtrs...
15. I thought it was ok at the time... and a decent song for a female to try and sing as her voice wasn't too bad over a bluesy vibe..... but not a song for now. Scraping the barrel with songs like this and there is plenty of other stuff to do.. Its only appeal was a female song in a barren field but not that great or classic a song for any sort of discerning set..IMO. Big yawnsville..... get some imagination..there is no excuse.
16.
The iem systems of any tour will be specced with the PA/desk. Very few, if any bands bother buying them. Take a look at the price tag of a psm1000 and an antenna combiner (plus external aerials) and on top of that the license costs for each venue (assuming they aren't running on 38). Bands aren't interested in all that. Unlikely you'll give the plugs back since every pro player using in ear monitors will have has them custom made to their ears. Virtually no, if any, resale value. Yes, some you could get reshelled.... but really? Is it worth it? Would you want somebody's ex in ear monitors?
Well, he doesn't have them anymore as they asked for them back. Major tour, big act and he said they were weren't going to give away £3-4ks worth of IEM's. The rest of the band were/are regular but the drum stool was more fluid.
17. Yep...not a good advert at all, is it?
18. ok... thought you meant Jaco and the like... which is passive, bridge pickup, pluck hard and muted...and roll off the presense. Pretty much Jazz bass territory..
19. Not played the 412's but I have played 2x112 in both GS and DB and find the DB's constantly better. The voicing is indeed shaped and whilst I like GS212's I can only use one with new strings as then the sound is nicely spikey and peaky. The DB212 has less lows..but it has enough, and the better mid voicing so more forgiving to a tweak of EQ should you need it. FWIW, my best DB config is a DB212 plus DB210 and I think I'd prefer that to an 810. I like a single 212 more than 2x210 but am thinking 412 would be too much .. probably too dark..?? Not exactly what you asked for tho'..best I could do
20. I don't get the P Bass doing that sound, tbh... totally wrong config unless you have a rear J pickup.
21.
Oh, that's a bit disappointing. With or without the other singer?
Just guesswork.... as I thought they were back on the road next year...mind you, so might be Phil Collins
22. Whoever it is, that man is a Tw*** that looks a mighty beast in the picture and I just can't for the life of me see what is so great about shooting an animal for sport. They shoot poachers in Africa... according to my mate who was a 'ranger'..and this seems little different. I can understand culling ...just about, but on what planet is that sport.??????
23.
Re Glastonbury 2015, Eavis said "We've got three headliners already – and that's without Prince. We've got some good headliners. We had an agent [for a band] yesterday on the platform by the stage watching Metallica with me, saying, 'My band want to do it next year'. I can't tell you who it was but that was done on the platform watching Metallica. It it a British artist? He's definitely British, but the band are not British any more." Who's that then. Genesis?
Fleetwood Mac..
24.
Has anyone else noticed how Ellie Goulding is getting increasingly desperate in trying to turn herself into some kind of credible "alternative " artist a la Florence And The Machine? I watched her yesterday evening and I thought she was going to do herself some kind of a mischief.
I agree her performances do look rather desperate and contrived these days... but fair play to her for letting the backing girl singer onto the same stage.
25.
I didn't watch Metallica on purpose because someone sent me a photograph taken fairly recently of James Hetfield proudly standing next to the carcass of a large grizzly bear he had just murdered for sport. ..................
I saw that and assumed it was actually true..as I couldn't recognise him etc etc ... so I turned over as soon as I could. I'd far rather see Brian Ferry on the sort of form his band were on anyway... but I really didn't want to watch Metallica on principle either.
