1. Welcome Jack
2. Popular fashions aside I have always had an unhealthy interest in the 1970s. For me owning a 70s Fender is about buying into my childhood in a way. I love my 70s Fenders and they are genuinely good basses. I own a couple of modern basses (reissues - just my tastes) as well but my musical tastes are very much with older acts. I like retro stylings, be it genuine or recreated.
They're considered "vintage" now because enough time has passed?
Vintage technically is 25yrs which frightenly means 1986 is keeping it old school. Don't sound right does it?
Enormous weight has become fashionable again?
Whilst I strongly suspect the comment is meant in a fairly lighthearted way, Basschat does seem to struggle having a thread on 70s Fenders without somebody popping up to say something like "watch the weights". The cynic in me wonders if there must have been a couple of occasions when the comment has been made by people who haven't actually ever played one in the same way that some people can talk for hours at parties about the clutch on a Ford Fiesta having never actually driven one! (& HJ I know you know your stuff more than that so just make the point - please don't think I'm having a pop at you personally). For the record I've owned 4 70s Fenders and played a fair few more. Only one of mine is a tad on the heavy side, all the others have been medium to fairly lightweight. Perhaps I've been lucky which leads me onto my next point...
Of course, the usual caveat applies: There's dogs and diamonds in any era.
Absolutely
3. In a way though it offers a band credibility when it's fan footage. We had a couple of videos that I just looked for but the fan has removed us... must have lost our credibility!?
4. I think it depends on the QC set by each individual band. We only use the better venues we play and our camera is pretty good. Others set the bar lower (some granted really go all out with multi camera angles etc which we've always stopped short at).
5.
So what was the main reason you moved it on ?
It was a casualty of a stage in my life where I started branching out onto other instruments. Suddenly I wasn't playing bass very much so started selling kit off. It was the last bass to go and one of only a couple that I occasionally regret.
6. Iloved mine but did sell it on a few years ago. I was used to Precisions but did learn to adapt
i found it got more of it's 'own sound' when i strung it with flatwounds.
I wish I'd tried this back when I had mine
7. I expect they're not players so easily forgiven
8. No, it's not in the distance! Certainly sounds up close!
9. Sounds nice enough but a little too much of a twist on the traditional for my tastes. I do like the big logo though
10. Looking good I do like the 4005's
11. Awesome clip! I must get some Argent. I loved The Zombies & nice to see John Denver introducing this
12. Welcome
13. I too have used both OBBM and the Chord Company. Whatever you decide cables are not something players should ever skimp on. If you spend all your hard earned on a decent bass and amp, it is quite simply absurd to then connect them with a £3 cable. And yet people do!?!
14. Welcome
15. Welcome
16. Nice one Wayne. I'm amazed we don't all do this more. My old 57RI P-bass had been redundant for years so I put a 62RI neck on it and now it gets gigged a lot more. As for the neck from the 57RI, I stuck that on some old 70s parts and that was my number one gigging bass all through 2010. We forget the Fenders were designed for the necks to be easily switched.
17. Nitro Mors is a strong paint stripper. Not for indoor use really (unless you have a well ventilated area) and you can get it from any hardware DIY store. I wouldn't say I made a "massive" mess anymore than if I'd have been using power tools. Obviously you get your body free of the neck and all hardware and then just paint it in Nitro Mors. You leave it for 1) they say 20 mins or 2) I say a couple of hours and then use a stripping tool / stripping knife to peel the paint off. The first application should take about 85% of it clean off and it literally falls off in a chemically mess. So you then repeat on the stubborn areas. I was interested to see a thread the other day on a stripped bass where somebody commented that the stripping had been a "professional job". It looked about as good a job as mine so I figured I must have got something right!
18. Welcome
19. It's not the best one though. I've seen this one before and just tried it again. My MIJ 51RI which is circa 2008 is according to that site 1994. It really isn't though. It's a guide but I think the Japanese ones tend to confuse the system a bit
20. Hoping to go on the 12th but certainly put an appearance in on one of the days.
21. Buy from a music shop or if you go second hand buy from a player - a badly set up (i.e. not actually set up at all) bass can really put you off. So avoid Argos! Personally I'd go for a Squier too. It's what I started on & the resale value is excellent.
22.
It doesn't have that much intrinsic value now, I know, but I love basses that have been well played in like this one.
Very cool & I think I'd have done similar. I'm not massively interested in value & I do like something that is playable

Hi

Welcome
24.
Not a combo, but the Orange Terror Bass and SP210 (or 212) makes a pretty compact package and should give you all the dirt you can handle. May be a bit above your budget though.
It's loud & light. I love mine
