1. Met Jim and Phil Capaldi in a pub in Worcester. Some friends of mine had a bloke knock on their door looking for a dentist, turned out it was Robert Plant.
2. I can't remember exactly what it said on the card but it implied that it was one of Nicks basses at some time. There is/was a Fender P bass in a Middlesbrough shop that I was told was used by the guy from the Levellers.
3. I use a bees wax based balm on my stingray neck, brings it up a treat.
4. Saw it today, It's a Corvette Standard 5 string. Didn't look close enough to see if it was active or passive. There was a pic of Nick holding said bass. 799 quid.
5. Yea I had looked at them. I had a BB414 last year, well made and easy to get on with. It will probably go on the short list.
6. I'm looking for a second band to gig with. I'm in a punky covers band and the guitarist plays in other bands and does solo stuff so I couldn't see it being a problem. As things stand we are doing open mic nights and informal gigs so its more like a part time band. The only problem I can see is rehearsal times more than gigs.
7. You should have said, "didn't I see you in that film, you know the one with Burt Reynolds, Deliverence wasn't it".
8. I like it! I was this close to buying a P bass in sunset orange.
9.
It'll buff right out
It'll go streight onto my fire, still that split will make it easier to break up . Expensive kindling wood.
10. Thanks for the offers Nick,KT. I'm in the process of hinting to the missus that another bass might turn up. She thought that buying me a Stingray would cure my GAS forever. If I knew that I could get along with a 5 string I could sell/chop in the Stingray and get one. Playing one in a shop is one thing, (yea you can see what they sound like and the build quality etc) but playing one in a rehearsal or live can be another. Unfortunatly all the bass players I know use a 4 so I can't even borrow one. Thats why I'm going to get a budget 5 to start with. At the mo I tune to D as it's easier for the singer, but I want to be able to go lower and still have the highs of a 4 string.
11.
well known "Guitarx2" shop in Newcastle
Ha! When I went there last they had a sunburst Marcus Miller hanging on the wall. There was a note wedged between the strings which said something along the lines of " feel me play me but if you break me you'll pay for me". I'm sorry but if that was a half arsed attempt at a disclaimer to get people to pay for damages it failed. Firstly the shop should have some sort of insurance for damages/breakages and Second if your going to have a sign it has to be a certain size in plain english placed where everyone can see it, preferably on the door as you walk in. So I don't think a riddle writen in felt tip on a postcard would stand up in court (if it got that far).
12. Another thing, if it's an informal band what is the probem if your not up to speed?. Obviosly I don't know any of you, but from what you've written it sounds like your guitarist is suffering delusions of grandeur. Perhaps he wants to leave and doesn't want to get on the wrong side of the boss thus blaming someone else (you) for the split. You could suggest if he wants to leave he can but you are willing to keep playing. I would still look for another group of people to jam with though.
13.
Roland Cube 30's often come up on ebay, pretty bulletproof and some cool FX. Like it was mentioned earlier they won't keep up with a guitar and drums but are small, light and with a reasonable sound
+1 I have a Cube30 around £160 new good array of sounds, headphone socket and input for cd/mps/minidisc player. I use it mostly with headphones and find it good for learning songs. I also have an SWR Workingmans 15 (160w or 200w @ 40hms) £175 2nd hand off ebay. This also has a headphone socket and I can plug my minidisc player into one of the inputs to play along to. It's quite light too, about the same as my peavy 15" cab. Its really swings and roundabouts, buy new and get some sort of guarantee on it or buy 2nd hand save some cash but make sure it hasn't been abused.
14. I like the Jazz 5 and the douglas with the though neck. What are they like to order from, costs etc?.
15. I'm looking for a budget 5 string, not too fussed how it sounds as strings, P'ups etc can be replaced. I'm more interested in construction and quality. The only one I've played so far is a OLP MM3 and rated it quite highly for the money. Others I've seen on the net and Ebay are Peavy, Squier, ESP LTD, Ibanez. There are some others on Ebay for less than £100 but as people say "you get what you pay for" and it would probably go straight out of the box onto the fire (I've got a real fire for it to go on). Oh yea, not too fussed what it looks like either. So does anyone own one, any comments welcome. Thanks, Marky.
16. I'd look for another band personally. I've been in similar position and just didn't have time for people being picky about how I interpreted a bass line. Don't get me wrong constructive critasisum can be a good thing, we do it all the time. When someone starts slating you it becomes personal and unprofessional. If you do leave you could say it's down to the guitarists attitude towards you. As you all work together you could find it spilling over into the work place, which could have other implications. Either way just practice hard, maybe get a tutor (if you havn't already). A couple songs to try are:- Out in the fields- Gary Moore Fairly basic bass line but it does drive the song whilst the guitar does all the noodling and a very good solo. Rock 'n' roll- Led Zep Again a driving almost 12 bar blues bass line and the guitar is very busy.
17. What amp were you playing the bass through?. Have you taken the pickguard off yet?, it would be interesting to see what pots etc they have used. Good review.

19.
Hi there, Two reasons, the winner couldn't pay he was a young ebayer who was worried about letting me down but he covered the listing costs. The other was that I had used an account I have just to sell to the uk but I had emails asking if I would send to the USA and Europe which I've decided to do hence I'm using this one (you need so many successful transactions to sell abroad)
The listing has now been removed. Why leave positive feedback saying quick payment or what ever when he hasn't bought it?. Without harping on too much the winning bidder has had the account since 2005 and has been buying car parts, so with the evidence shown I don't think he's a young ebayer.
20. I have used many different brands of string over the years (Fender, Elite, Trace Elliott, Rotosound, Picato, Dadi, Ernie Ball, Roberts). Until the Roberts I had never had a problem with strings, having 4 duff E strings in 4 sets is unacceptable. I havn't the time to keep sending strings back until I get a good set. It also costs money, money that could be spent on a deicent set.
21. Someone should send him a message saying that it can't be that rare as others have been sold on ebay recently, and oldy enough had the trem arm missing.
22. I have not tried them yet but the two models I'm interested in are the Imola (looks a bit like the bass Jah Wobble used), and the Rimini (if you squint youur eyes looks a bit like Mani,s Ric).
23. When I spoke to a guy at Middlesbrough Music Centre he told me that the Rockinbetter were made by Tokai. Also Purple Turle sell the Rockinbetter and the title says Tokai. I agree about the bridge and P/U cover. The Indie doesn't have a cover and as far as I can remember it had a P/J bass bridge.
24. I havn't read all 13 pages of this thread so sorry if this has already been mentioned, but has anyone seen the Indie Ric copy. There is one in a local music shop, I think it was priced over £500!. Also what are the Tokai copies like?. I have not long bought a Stingray so can't really afford a proper Ric (unless I chop the ray in or sell it).
