3. I don't know if this is old news or not even news at all, but Windows music shop in Newcastle have some SX basses and guitars in stock. They have a black scorpion jazz copy and a metallic red jazz copy both £169.
4. I was going to start a topic on gig volume a few days ago, a mate at work is currenty deaf in one ear after going to a gig. Some bands and some venues crank it up far too loud. I went to a mates party last year and the band were so loud you couldn't hear what they were trying to play. However if you stood outside the levels were ok and you could actually start enjoy the music. So it's not just the musicians and bar staff who are at risk from damaged hearing, it's the audience also. When I started out all those years ago the PA was used for vocals only. These days some bands put everything through the PA drums and all, no matter what size the venue is. I agree that using a PA can give you more control over the sound levels but this only works if the back line is set to a sensable volume. These laws may seem silly and a bit of a killjoy but at the end of the day you need to protect your hearing and that of others.
5. I think there early stuff was better. Pablo Honey was great and so was The Bends, I just can't get my head around the newer stuff.
6.
Id go for an RBX series YAMMY i think if you wanted a 5 string
I have one (RBX765), the neck as nice. 44mm at the nut, 65mm at the 12th fret, 77mm at the 24th and has 19mm string spacing (center to center) at the bridge. I can get a rather raw, barky P'bass sort of tone using the neck pickup. I don't know if you can still get one new but they do pop up 2nd hand, I paid £110 for mine. There is also the RBX 375, but I don't know if the dimensions are the same.
7. Nice one. I fitted one of those to a Cort bass I had and I will be getting a 5 string version for the Yamaha. My story of a shop setup was that I was promised a free setup after playing it in. I could cope with paying for new strings even though they were overpriced (IMO). But charging me £5 for fitting them I felt was taking the mick. I also asked if they would keep the old strings for spares but on collection was told they had cut them off.
8. I used to get a good slap tone out of my Laney, It had a 15" speaker and a horn. I used to have the bass up slightly the low mid and trebble flat and the high mids turned right up.
9. It's quite satisfying doing your own set up's and mod's.
10.
There are no rules whatsoever, not even of thumb
I agree, even new prices vary so wildly these days. What with internet prices, imports, highstreet prices and ebay. I've seen 2nd hand basses go on ebay for more than what I could pay for a new one, whilst some others go for less than half price. Everyone has their own idea of what price they are willing to buy and sell at.
11. I've seen a Joe Strummer Tele in the local shop which I am sort of gassing for but can't afford.
12. f***in ek thats not a bass it's a harp. Excuse the profanity.
13. They have one of the Richwood basses in a shop in Darlington. I havn't played it but I'm not keen on all the inlays etc. My question would be, is it £500 worth of bass or is it priced at £500 because of the add on's? (i.e a gold plated turd). The Aria on the other hand I have tried (well a 5 string version). Very nice bass well worth the money.
14. John Deacon Phil Lynott JJ Burnel John Paul Jones Bruce Foxton Not in any particular order
15. I got my 2nd hand Yamaha last week and within an hour I had smacked it against the corner of a wall. It already had a few scratches on the back. I had it resting on the arm of the sofa whilst re-stringing it. I picked it up and sort of swung it around at the same time, bang off the corner of the wall. Now there is a nice ding on the headstock.
16.
The Awakening is originally by The Reddings...
Thanks for that, I noticed that Primus do short snippits of covers. Master of Puppets is one I can think of, there is a Youtube video of it.
17. Is a singer a musician? Anyone can sing, they might not know it but they can. I can sing and play bass, a mate of mine plays drums and sings so where does that put us on that chart. (Its my birthday humor me).
18. +1 for Rhythm Stick I think it's an amazing bass line. I can play the first 2 bars and thats it. I also like doing slap, although not to well. I'd like to learn Tommy the Cat or The Awakenings by Les Claypool.
19. I missed Norman last year when he played at Carmel RC school in Darlington with Wilko Johnson. I found out the Wednsday afer the gig when I found an advert the size of a postage stamp in the local rag. Boy was I pissed off.
20. Thanks for the pointer Rich. I'll be looking for a bridge and tuners to upgrade in the non too distamt future. Cheers
21. I think most shipping costs involve insurance of somekind. On an expensive instrument the insurance could be quite high. If I was having a grand's worth of bass shipped I would want it insured and well packaged (hard case flight case etc) which would add to the weight. However, our friend is selling a bass worth IRO £150-180. In my opinion he/she can't be arsed with the rigmarol off posting so has w@nked £60 on for postage probably to put people off getting it posted.
22. I had been looking for a cheap 5 string for a few weeks and after being out bid a few times the Yamaha popped up on ebay. I have always been a bit cautious about buying on-line let alone ebay. I prefer to play a bass before buying it as one mans very good condition could be anothers adverage. The bass came on with bids starting at £80 or a "buy it now" of £110 with £20 P&P. I thought about it for about 20 mins, found some on-line reviews etc, threw caution to the wind and hit "buy it now". After unwrapping the bass the first thing I noticed was how dirty it was. It looked like someone had eaten their dinner off it the Elite strings had rust spots as did the gold coloured hardware. The description said "very good condition as hardly used" but I would say well used in adverage condition needs a clean and set up. Despite this I think I got the bass for a good price. On cleaning I found out how thin the gold colour is on the hardware and even with a little polish I was soon through to the silver underneath. I unscrewed the neck and cleaned it up, lightly sanding the back then applying some beeswax polish front and back. Whilst the neck was off I noticed a shimm (2 thin strips of plastic 5mm X 50mm) in the neck pocket, so I took them out. I could always put a shimm back in if required. With everything clean and back together I fitted some new Elite Stadiums, gave it a good set up and fitted a new battery. Now I can finally play the bass. First impressions the neck is sweet, at the nut it's not much wider than my Stingray and the string spacing at the bridge is about the same as the Ray. The neck I find easy, its not too wide like some I have played. On other 5 string basses a narrow neck sometimes means narrow string spacing but in my opinion Yamaha have got it spot on. The bass balances well on the strap. The longish top horn means that it sits back so you are closer to the nut. This and the contoured body make it a comfortable bass to play. Soundwise it has a read beafy low end. Bridge pickup only, has a slight naisal sound but still has plenty of bottom. Both together and I get a similar sound to the Stingray. Neck only, gives you a P'bass sound and the 2 band eq lets you fine tune. The cortrols are master volume, pan pot with a centre click to have either pickup or a blend of the two. The other two controls are bass and treble which also have the centre click. All in all I think I've found a great bass I'd give it an 8/10 overall. The only thing letting it down is the quality of the gold finish on the hardware, but I can live with that. Even the translucent green isn't as gareish as it looked in the photos and it has a nice grain in the veneer top. The other problem I'm having is putting it down, I can't stop playing. I will be taking it to the open mic night on Monday night to play it in anger and see how well it copes and cuts through. I will try and get some photos up later and give an update after playing it live. Cheers.
