1. Well done Garry , I think those beetles are playing leapfrog , at least they are if the daughter wants to get involved this month
2.
I'm not saying which letter my mix is, but I think I'm missing some vocal parts too. We're some stems added later on or all together at the same time?
the stems were all together , but the main vocal was split over at least a couple of tracks IIRC
3. I too noticed some parts were missing completely from a few of the mixes, but had terrific sections in them , it will be good to hear the reasoning at the end of the comp.
4.
From a guitarists perspective, as mentioned above, it makes sense to have your less dextrous hand on the fretboard because that's doing the simpler task - it's on / off basically. The note is either fretted or not. The more dextrous hand then has the challenge of creating the "feel" of the piece. Without that you might as well get a robot to play it. Like this:
or engineers Try playing in a blues band with engineers , they know where the notes are , they know what order to play them in , but somehow , something is missing , maybe the soul/feel/life of the piece is in there somewhere but it hasn't been specified correctly
5. Top effort Steve , I know I mentioned it needed a tweak or two , but respect for giving it the third degree I might shout up for another go now
6.
I find it takes me a lot longer to sit down and learn someone else's line than it does to dream up one of my own and play it along to a song what I have wrote. Or even someone else's song that i am playing bass on. That's particularly easy as the artist will pretty much tell me what they want played, and then i play it. Beats all that rewinding and trying to make out the indistinct thumpy thumpy thump of a recorded bass line.
Ah yes Dave , but it can easily fall down when all the band have to learn it , remember it , and reproduce it consistently to empty rooms while trying to enjoy it , to ensure building a following . sometimes it works , sometimes folks just don't have the energy, desire or need to do it .
This thread should be retitled "justify why you are in a covers band"
I don't seek justification for what I do from anyone, but I suppose the landlords and party organisers will pass judgement on whether what we do provides suitable entertainment for their guests, and that is all that matters .
7. A difficult one to work out and it is brilliant playing it blind, that must be a heck of a lot of work Si , many thanks , especially when there are some obvious slow learners in there Voted
8. Thanks , I think Though the shirt is not a sh*teshirt it was bought with intention of being a bit different , and it made a great pirate tunic at a fancy dress gig a while ago , and to be honest , my spector is green and the Baton was purple , so I needed a shirt that would compliment both extremes of the spectrum , one just has to make the effort But yes , a sh*teshirt is on the list, I will make the effort at some point and actually get one
9. I have scrawled my mark on the voting sheet , some great stuff as usual .
10. I had never written a note until last Christmas when I saw the composition competition on here and it gave me the kick to have a go , then I had to learn DAW, audio interfaces and mixing , I still don't know much about any of it , but I have had 2 entries and got a vote on both , what a buzz that was, to see someone liked it, fantastic But I am in a cover band because I fell in with a bunch of like minded guys and love playing the stuff we do, to the people we do , it is an easier route than original stuff , both in learning to play and getting a crowd , but we can slip on or two of our own in as and when the opportunity arises.
11. Great pictures Steve , I will bounce a few reminders out in the morning Jim .
12. One of my faves is Elvis ................Costello , pump it up , I found it very awkward to pick out some of the detail , but you'll love it , nail it , record it , post it and hey, I get to see it done properly . Happy birthday , enjoy your passion for the day .
13.
So just goes to show, always do your best, you may get better rewards than you expect.
^ Always this , though sometimes playing your best is reward in itself...............anyway ......... We played our bass relay gig tonight to a birthday party in a pub , and boy were they ready to party , a top night all round , rhythm guitar reckoned it was his most enjoyable gig ever , and he has done some work . We had 2 good party enquiries at top dollar , met 2 fellow BC'ers who came along and we raise a few pennies for the Relay charity , that makes it a win, win, win, win scenario The only problem is sleep won't happen, and I have a couple of customers to see in the morning
14. Cheers Steve , you're very kind , the crowd were really up for it and that helps everything move along nicely. I was well pleased to see you and Vinny , it is brilliant when you come and introduce yourselves . I think that this relay is fantastic , a truly inspired idea from JIm and I feel honoured to be a part of it . I am not sure how much went in the tins but I am hoping for a few donations on the website , I will check it out and send a few nudges if needed . Good luck with your go Steve and Vinny. Kev
15. On the plus side , its all plus , on the minus , I am also gigging on the 13th so won't be able to come and enjoy the craic young Vinny- my-lad , ah well , as a mr green once said . the party is still on tommorrow night for y'all .
16.
if you have a daytime job then you should do it for free!!! or enough to cover your petrol and sandwich because you enjoy it, and you have a source of income and leave the paid gigs to us guys who NEED the money, who do this to pay the bills and put roof over head
I am not sure how doing a wedding for free will provide more paid work for you guys who need the money
17.
Apparently, I'll be playing Sweet Home Alabama....
Doesn't everybody , I am letting Vinny make the call as I offered it to him before I logged in today , I have Emailed aswell so should firm it up later this evening either way .
18. Excellent news ,we have people queing for it now Latest from me is that Vinny has been in contact and will happily take it on next and I have tentatively given him the OK ,though I am not sure he can attend on thursday, or what his gig diary is like, but I will point him to the thread now and get his input with regard the other kind offer from Steve . Kev
19. Rushbo has an upside down neck but strung correctly , it is an object of some confusion , it looks like an upside down lefty but isn't .
20. Is there any interest locally to get involved ? I have emailed the 3 closest on the contacts list , Runcorn , Middlewich and Flint , and had no response , come one boys and girls , there are definately a few gigging players around Chester , Wirral and N Wales , step up and take it on , be a part of it, there will be no relay without players to pass it on to. There are Jam nights to play at if thats all you can get to , it doesn't matter , just play a song and pass it on .
21.
Your playing hand is doing two jobs - it's pulling a single string (dexterity) with an appropriate amount of strength to make the note ring clear and true.
pulling a single string is one job , whats the other is it for pulling something else I often thought that as I am right handed I should be fretting with the right hand , but I guess that at the end of the day it doesn't matter and is purely a question of practice whichever way you do it . Ed ...to add smut
22. OK , I'm in , I got a vocal of a fashion done in the end , its deliberately low(ish) in the mix , but Its there link
23.
Don't forget photos too
Ian has the hand over photo , it took ages to get the studio set up looking just right , I am sure he will post as and when .
24. and on we go , Cheers Ian , The Golden Eagle in Chester city centre on Thursday (28th March) come on down ed to add map update
