Well, of the famous ones, probably Diana Krall, Judith Owen, Belinda Carlisle & Jane Weidlin. But my personal faves are one of the singers who works for me from time to time, Nicki Allan from Leeds (Have a listen to her at www.myspace.com/outtoplayjazz ) & Anita Wardell. Look up Anita on myspace or iTunes. Her scatting voice is something else! The bass player in both cases, from time to time has been me
You said it ...Diana Krall...she is very good... .....For me Anita Baker, Barbera Striesand.(i know i spelt that wrong) Maysa Leak, Randy Crawford, Kate Bush, are superb!!! But i think there are not many better than (depending on your taste of styles) Aretha.. For voice power and control.. she is awsome...No doubt IMHO,, she is the power house of female vocals who has ever lived.. Also my love of music altogether,, Chaka Khan..probably the most talented musician/singer of our time...She also plays bass...Have you seen her?? she rocks on a jazz bass fingerstyle!!! you got to love Chaka.. One thing i never understood, is why people thought Janis Joplin had a good voice..I guess im missing something...??

Its my bday so im up later than usual. Just wanted to post some great clips you may or may not appreciate..These for me, although not all bass related, are just the best music ive ever heard! The first is a gospel outfit called New Direction..Just amazing!! I cant imagine what its like to play bass in this band... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA2lwHQXYKo Steely Dan..Donald and Walter live recently..I love this so much.I could watch this all day long..The horns are so Incognito!!!.Just fantastic muscians doing there stuff..Cant work out what jazz hes playing though? Mike Lull??? I would kill to be in this band..The lyrics are great "clean this mess up else well all end up in jail, those test tubes and scales, get it out of here well all end up in jail.theres gas in the car...theres some desparation in his voice to get out of there, that tells the story so well... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylr2D4Pwn58 I have nothing to say about this apart from his Clav playing..his high note placement with the lower chordal stuff always gets me.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDZFf0pm0SE Stevie on a drum solo....You got to see this!!!!This just says everything thing about Stevie Wonder, he is pure music.....Just incredible!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBA4vWQRBA0 Marus miller with Herbie Hancock, Poogie Baell, Wayne Shorter..Its Marcus's show but what a band!!!and what intro playing by the man...Marcus for me is the best technical player out there who has also got soul, and plays from it// http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHf7DvVpeiU
I like Jazz basses, but I want a bound and blocked rosewood board and - tricky bit - a 24-fret neck with good access to the dusty end. So I suppose that means a shorter Jazz body (which would suit me anyway because I'm scrawny, and big bass bodies look silly on me). And I might want it to be a 5. I haven't quite decided. I've seen Fender sell a 24-fret Jazz but from what I can gather they're Korean and not very good. Does anyone else make one or am I looking at a custom bass?
Woah....... i would first say that the Fender Jazz 24 fret (ok i know they have quality issues) is a great bass..I love that bass, was my second bass, and it blew me away.... great looking, great pups, good hardwear, and has got an awesome bridge pick up honk, like i cant get from any of my other jazz basses..Stick a sadowsky preamp in that baby and im sure the tone would be supreme!!! That aside, i cant think of a stock 24 fretter 5 string Jazz that has a bound neck and blocks? If you decide to go the custom route, for me John Shuker seems to build basses that i have heard are awsome to a modest amount of cash.. I do think that a bound, blocked neck is going to add alot of squids to what you may pay out though, and im not sure if John has 24 fret jazz basses in his inventory..Any makers from the states like Mike Lull, Sadowsky, who do 24 fret basses will hammer you on the £.And you will have a long wait.. There is a maker from Europe who makes awsome Jazz basses at a very good price, the name is Maruszczyk.. A chap on here called AREA can point you in the right direction Whats your budget, if you dont mind me asking??

Singing and Playing..Do you find this hard/easy???
bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Snap. Not sure why really, I guess it's the rhythm...
I think i know why..With the guitar, you form your hand position and hold it there, then sing a part..With a bass you are moving around that chord all the time with single notes..so requires more concentration.. its more difficult to play the bass and sing than guitar IMHO....The guitar is very in tune rythmically to vocals ( unless your finger picking) so is easier..the Bass requires( not always) A different route through the song so is alot harder to sing against.. -
Does anyone find this very difficult, or does it come naturally??...Was discussing this with a bass player recently..He said he cant sing and play.. I do believe that this is something that either comes naturally or doesnt....However!.. The mind is a muscle like any other, and in being that, it may take time to train that muscle to do things that dont come naturally..There are some fingerings on the bass that i hate doing and feel very awkward..But i force myself to master them..(avoiding injury of course) hopefully making me a more agile player.. My point is, i seem to hear alot of people who say they have tried to sing/play but cant, but dont seem to have spent a lot of time practising this technique... I dont find it easy, but if i get to know the bassline, then work out the singing parts, my mind slots them in to the appropriate parts..Im trying to practice soloing on the bass, then singing a different line and its bloody hard...I feel the burn with that one...Its like a mind dead lift, while im doing a mind bench press, coupled with a mind tricep press. Any thoughts on this??

Thanks D, WOW i love the Tordoff!!!! I do love the look of Koa...
-
Paul i erm...cant find the site? Am i being stupid?
-
Well there are 5 screws in all..4 holdin down the bass of the key to the wood, and one holding the cog to the body of the key..These are all tight... Its the tuning peg that wobbles inside the shaft....this should surely be fairly tight and smooth with no play!
-
Hey People.. I have recently aquired a CIJ 62 Jazz..Its a great bass but the tuning key are very wobbly, and go out of tune very easily.. Is there any way i can stiffen them up, i can literally spin them around...I know there are small plastic washers in some tuning keys..Could these have worn?? If i cant fix these i would like to replace them..but at £80 squids a pop, they aint cheap.. Where is the best place to get the 62 keys as i know they are a slightly different shape to the later tuning keys..(more rounded) Also did the 62 Jazz require you to take the neck off to adjust the action..It a real pain to have to do this!!! Thanks
Damn those commercialised people stopping us from... making money. I'm not sure I followed your post, really.
I think she means the sound i commercialised??
-
It depends on what music scene you follow..If its popular music like all the 'haircut bands' as i heard someone say on here, its allways bored me...they all sound the same....Its why i HATE Radio 1, and love Radio 2, Smooth FM, ETC There are people/bands out there bringing out superb albums that are not in the press..you just have to find them.. etc

Sadowsky RV5 Burst/Tort/Rosewood: SOLD SUBJECT TO APPROVAL
bubinga5 replied to Brother Jones's topic in Basses For Sale
Much as I hate to split up my pair of Sadowskys, one has to go and I can't help but be more of a four string guy. I bought this about 18 months ago from a bass tutor in Surrey. He'd just brought it back from New York where he'd bought it new from Sadowsky. Tonally and playability wise it's the best 5 I've touched. The spacing is spot on (for me at least) and the tone is very punchy and even across the board. Body wood is alder with a Brazilian rosewood board. Condition wise it has a small dint in the back of the headstock, but is otherwise mint, not even any buckle rash. Ungigged - just used for noodling around. Comes with its original Sadowsky semi-hard case. I don't drive, but can meet up in central London. Price is a pretty firm £1200. Not really interested in trades as need cash for engagement ring...
UHHH.. Im a little confused why you have a Pic of my Sadowsky in your advert. Thats my couch.?? I dont mind you using the pic, but it may be a bit misleading as its not the bass your selling! Second Pic from left... -
I played my basses against each other this evening over the same loop... and ive come to the conclusion that the bass that stands above everything else is the Sadowsky.. The fender 75 is a class act, and the StingRay5 is awsome, the Lakland is great, the Ostinato is just pure funk,, but nothing touches this bass for amazing across the FB tone.. Its like a tone of butter and chocolate thats got the most incredible punch..i defy any bass to sound as good as my RV5..( a matter of opinion of course) I really do think Roger has the art of Electric Bass making down.....The Preamp is a masterpiece IMHO....coupled with the amazing quality..I think, if you can, everyone should try out a Sadowsky..if you like the tone , you will never look back... I just wanted to share my love. Surely Alleva's cant be that much better? Where's Chris?

I relation to the bridge pickup which seems low on the G string side, compared to the E string side, looks wonky to me, hope it's the pics. Steve.
got me that...might be the saddles and shadow off the pups that throw u off? awsome looking J..love the colour..what are the pups on it? is it passive/active

bubinga5 replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
Just out of interest...does anybody know what other jazz-style basses are made with a natural finish, with maple neck, black scratchplates and black blocks ? (Tell me if this is OT, OP ?)
Maybe Sandberg.....Alot of the custom makers will do this...Shuker for one... -
Fender Jazz American 1975 Re-Issue and Darryl Jones Skyline
bubinga5 replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
Just thinking about my perfect jazz bass and I have always loved the look of the Fender Jazz American 75 re-issue in natural with block inlays and its kind of the bass I would work up to owning oneday if the need for a good jazz was required. However, I am hearing great things about the Lakland Darryl Jones Jazz bass and wondering how they compare. Having played OBBM's one, it felt and sounded great. Plus, being a Lakland Duck Dunn owner, I am very impressed with the quality and customer service from them. Can anyone shed any light on these two basses, especially the Fender. I currently own a Fender Classic Jazz Mexican 70's re-issue which is a superb bass and this would go if I got one of the other basses. However, how much better is the Fender Amercian 75 RI Jazz and how does it all compare to the Darryl Jones. Just interested in opinions and thoughts really.
Hey Linus.. Well i have the USA 75 RI, and to really honest for the money you can pay less and get a MIJ/CIJ 75 RI,, IMHO they are just as good...I love my 75 but i wasnt blown away by the quality of it.(it is very solid though) .Although the tone is very very good..I just dont think the USA is worth anywhere near twice as much as its MIJ?CIJ counterpart!!!!!! I have a CIJ 62 RI and its just as good, if not better than the USA 75 quality wise.. I havent played the DJ, (made in Japan i think, not sure) but have heard the quality is more consistent with Lakland basses... I personally think mass produced basses made in Japan are SO well made....There attitude towards consistent quality is great...This is why Roger Sadowsky goes to them for his Metro series! Hope this helps.. -

Donald Fagan's new album..(well new to me)
bubinga5 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Darn, for a minute I thought there was a new Fagen album out. "Morph" is from 2006. Quality album though, great arrangements and grooves. BTW - the bass player is Freddie Washington (not Jackson).
Ahh, right you are, that will be the erm...beer last night -
Anyone heard the new/ish album 'Morph The Cat'... i have always loved this guy..his voice is not what i love in a voice but i love it all the same, i would recognise his voice anywhere..for me his attention to detail is sublime. he is a true master of his craft!! the way he plays that fender organ is so cool. Kamakiriad and Night Fly are superb, and this album is not far off..my favorites being 'Security Joan', 'Morph the Cat', The amazing 'H Gang'. and my favorite Brite Nitegown..this is amazing stuff IMHO.. Everything about this album, as usual, has Fagans trademark master arranging qualities.. Freddie Jackson on bass, is supremely laid back. i would like to see Pino all over this..Awesome guitar work too.. If you like Fagan, buy this. I would kill to play on this stuff!!!
