1.
I could never get into Incognito. I liked Galliano a lot, but never thought Incognito came across very well on record. Same with JTQ - their records always seemed a bit flat. Have to give them another go.
??
2. For me Tribes Vibes and scribes, Beneath the surface, Positivity, are there best,,Tales from the Beach is awsome too..
3. Thanks for the opinion's guys..im reall leaning toward's Celinder...I hear so many good things about them...I wish Eubassix's old Meshell Celinder was available!!!! Also, anyone played a Sukop..?
4. By some good fortune, i have 4 grand, and was thinking about spending it on a bass....Was wondering what are the top 5 super jazz basses on the market. or anything else for that money????.i would love to try a Low End jazz...Dont get me started on AC's....Im GASing over a new 5 or 4 string. so whats in my ball park? tis not a jazz, but I was thinking about a Sukop.. i have heard one and it sounded awsome!!!...I know there mega bucks though.. Im still searching for a bass that ticks all the right boxes..the only one that i really love is the Ostinato...i played it live on thursday and it was sooo good..The tone is awsome when playing gently, but when you dig in through the Aguilar its got the most amazing growl and punchy tone..There was a guy in another band playing the same night, with a HH stingray..and he played the Ostinato and said it was in a different league... Ive come to the thought that, although i love the passive sound, i dig the well amplified bass..the EMG's are superb on the Ostinato..Any suggestions on a new bass??
5. Just wondered if anyone knew what fretless Randy play's on Tribes Vibes and Scribes..this has been my holy grail album for a long time, i know he has played Moons, Sei's, Jazzez, Fender's etc. But would love to know what fretless he plays here....Magnificent playing anyway.. I was lucky enough to talk to Bluey about a month ago with Jim Mullen (a fantastic scottish jazz guitar man from the Citrus Sun album) and they said Randy was the best bass player (in terms of a bass players musical vision), they had ever played with....I asked them what he played these days, and the said he was playing a Stingray 5 the last time they saw him play... The solo (if you like this stuff) on Magnetic Ocean is , IMHO,better than any Julian Crampton, Meshell, Marcus Miller, Victor, or any musical bass playing solo ive ever heard...obviously Randy had to think this bass line over, ..but what an amazing piece of playing..He really is the most musical bass player ive ever heard...i love his slide double stops and his digging in is so tastefull, in this tune.......If you love fretless bass playing of any genre..!!!, this i so cool.. may seem dated to some, but this is the music i spent my youth listening to and Randy is the man. Im gonna say he's playing a custom of some kind? Even if you dont love Jazz/funk/Groove etc.l...You need to listen to this album for the bass.its supreme...the best fretless bass ive ever heard...Up there and beyond with Pino for pure groove and timing.. Sorry i cant bring up a link..look it up. 'Need to Know' is a masterclass in JazzFunk bass playing..Awsome..
6. i have often wondered (being a jazz fan) if its worth buying a 60's/70's jazz?.. I have heard you can either get a peach or a turkey.. and not all vintage jazzez are good..i may take the plunge and sell the sadowsky and 75 RI to get one..or are custom shop's a better bet?
7. Rich you have a text!
8. Man i love that Shuker Throughneck!! this is the only bass i have seen for a while that i have seriously considered buying...Must resist!!!!! i would need to sell a bass or two to justify this purchase...If only you would trade
9.
The peaks on uncompressed bass can be quite tough on monitors but if you're sensible there shouldn't be a problem. Exactly what sort of buzz? Alex
A low frequency buzz..its only coming from one speaker, which worries me!
10.
Yes, the saddles on the bridge of my MIJ '75 RI Jazz have that tendency too. I'm thinking of upgrading that too. Don't know about those custom shop '62 pickups, but there are Fender USA pickups in my MIJ too (it comes stock with Fender USA '75 RI pickups) and they're absolutely GREAT. The MIJ '75 RI is not an entirely accurate replication of a '75 Jazz, the bridge pickup is not in the '70's location, but still it mimics that bright and punchy tone very well. Great bass, definitely not my last MIJ Fender! They also produce a very wide range of lefthanded instruments (even a 5-string) whereas Fender USA only offers some standard models, in a very limited colour range (American Standard P and J, in black with a white guard and sunbust with a tortoise guard only, and only with a rosewood board ). So I've come to like Fender Japan a lot
Not a 75 bridge pup position on the MIJ? really.. im sure it is on the USA..i could be wrong...I cant see Fender getting that wrong on a reissue..like i said ICBW.. The customshop' are a better pup than the USA's for sure..
11.
I was surprised at how bright they were - they've got a real punch in the mids to them too. It's a shame they've got that annoying sharpness to the pole piece edges so many j bass pickups have - just a pet peeve of mine ;P The lakland pickups in my DJ5 are a lot darker in comparison - although I didn't compare the pot/cap values
Yeah Russ, i really noticed the lovely punch in the mids on the 62.. a really nice passive tone to them... A super low flat action on the TRB, glad you like it!!
12. Custom shop Jazz + SVT
13. Not really a bass issue but here goes..I have an annoying buzz coming from my monitors when i play bass through them..Anyone know who might be able to look at them? There MAudio monitors and i dont want to send them back and all that hassle!! I play bass through them, so im not sure if this is the cause...i dont play loud at all, but im not sure if this can damage monitors?
14. Though i may get more replies here.... This may be sacrlidge, but im thinking about (temporarily) swapping the neck from my 75 RI to the 62 RI...Im loving the Customshop pickups on the 62, but love the neck and FB on the 75.. My Q is, will the neck pocket fit..Also how will this affect the sound..the 62 being Rosewood and very trebbly.. and the 75 being maple...If the holes do not line up or(seeing as the 75 only has three holes) will i have to drill a pilot hole for the forth screw? Anything else to watch out for?? Thanks..
15. This may be sacrlidge, but im thinking about (temporarily) swapping the neck from my 75 RI to the 62 RI...Im loving the Customshop pickups on the 62, but love the neck and FB on the 75.. 16. Im thinking abput trying some EMG's i have in another bass, in my 75..Is there anything i should watch out for, putting Active pups in a passive bass..Im doing the soldering myself!!! Has anyone done this??
17. Hey were not that tough ...plenty of begginers on here who might buy this bass!!!
18. Donalds 'Night Fly' Can anyone explain the bass notes in this song, in relation to the main chord progression.. I may be wrong but is Miller using Inversions alot...He seems to at the start of the song... Can anyone explain in simple talk?? I love Miller's playing in this by the way, its one of his best IMHO...... bloody awsome that guy is!!!!!!
19. Three new additions to the collection..I can honestly say that all these basses are truelly greats... Stingray 5 I believe this to be the best mass produced 5 string on the market today..the best B string ive ever heard..Flawless construction..Solid..A real working pro's bass..I can see why Randy H Taylor plays one...I was lucky enough to buy this bass from Martthe Bass, who not only packed it well, but sent me a set of Slinkies and a kind letter. He was a pleasure to deal with!!! Everyone should try one of these basses.. Lakland 55-01 with Glockenklang pre, and Nordy PUPS I bought this bass from Platypus..Just awsome, it has wear on the upper finger b which i love, its been played this one..The tone is something special..just as good as the Sadowsky, but without the growl..I just LOVE playing it...a real quality active punch....im taking this to record with a funky house band in june..they love the tone.. Fender CIJ 62 RI withcustom shop PUPS.. This thing has the best unamplified tone ive ever heard...Just phenominal punch and growl..the funkiest, rudest bass i own...Very trebley, so i roll that off a tad and its perfect..I cant believe for the money you can buy a bass like this!!! In the right hands this bass could blow you away......To a funk gig, i would take this over the 75 MIA anytime... You know the rest...Fantastic basses..I can honestly say like my children (if i had any) i love them all the same..Apart from the Sadowsky, which stands out above everything..Roger and his team really do know how to make instruments..Im no luthier, but it seems they are so much further ahead then any other maker for the money of a Metro...Im sure Metros are in the reach of Alleva's, Celinders, Fodera's..for tone, build quality, and playability..Like the SR, everyone should try (even if you cant buy) a Sadowsky...I know why Chris likes them so much... The Ostinato is a strange one(in a good way).. Beautifull bass,i lovely tulip wood top,(it looks your looking at the wood through a magnifiying glass??) birdseye maple neck and head stock...Doesnt really sound like a jazz, (maybe a little) but is more precision like... But when you dig in, it has an awsome hifi growl. especially soloing on the higher frets... The one i always go to though is the 75,.. it seems to do everything..i really feel comfortable with taking it to any style music rehearsal..There is something about a jazz that just fits... i once couldnt afford new strings for my Vintage Bubinga 4 string, so I consider myself very lucky to own these basses..i will prob never sell any of them... I have got gass for a Modulus J4 or a FBass studio though...damn gas hey..
20. I was wondering why bass players like either passive or active basses.. Two very different basses i own are a Lakland 55-01 with a Glock pre and Nordies and the other is a 62 RI,... i love the Lakland, its got such an amazing punchy powerfull tone, with a lovely hifi tone to it, but on the other hand the 62 has this raw Jazz growl with nothing but its wood and pick ups i suppose.. Im not i can decide what sounds better? What does every one prefer...Active or Passive??
21. Not long ago i swapped my TRB6II for a CIJ 62 RI Jazz with Mr Russ..I played it in a funk outfit im dabbling with tonight and it is simply AWESOME!!!!!.. (for the money i really cant say that my USA 75 RI is that much better)...Its has the sweetest tone when i role off the treble, then when you dig in a little out comes this amazing growl.. Pure funk..I was laughing when i heard this thing through the Aguilar.. I will say it does have custom shop pickups in it so russ told me...how much of difference this makes i dont know??? Then comes the bridge pick up honk..full on Meshell on a Celinder!!! This is my go to bass from now on..Sooooo easy to play! The only thing that i would like is a satin finish to the neck, gloss can get a little sticky for me..Would it be wrong to sand the neck down??? Anyone got a CIJ/MIJ 62 RI..What do you think?? Thanks MR Russ!!!!
22. Blimey...You ok Rich?
23. A Focus...Love it, perfect for the job!!!
