I have quite a few studio albums by various artists, but the ones i enjoy most are the live ones...they have so much more atmosphere... albums that spring to mind are Donny Hathaways 'these songs for you' LIVE...this is prob me and my sisters favorite album of all time...you only have to listen to hear how good this band are with Willie....never mind Donny's voice..IMO the best soul voice ever recorded...true gospel power and control..as a song writer Stevie is the man, but when it comes to voice Donny Blows him away IMO..who knows what Donny would have come to had he lived past his age of unfortunate death....wonderful talent... the best bass playing ive ever heard....Willie Weeks reminds me of James Jamerson here..behold Willies playing....man does he play this soo well..he bounces around this song like a magician..on a P too.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogNnJk3xOh0 The other is Maxwell's Live and Unplugged...friggin love it....he really is the father of street soul.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJbNJJNDdUU The last is what im listening to now...Erica Badu Live...i love this album so much..from cover's of Roy Ayers's 'Searchin' to the wonderfull 'Tyrone'....check out her lyrics....the best track is the Heatwave's Boogie Night's.that turns into Jones Girls classic....the walking bass is great but when it kicks in it's f***in cool.. Tyrone live... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVSIPHQdQT0 any one got any other live albums to check..soul funk or not..

What do you want from your Fender clones?
In terms of sound, I've been far more impressed with Laklands than I have with the Fenders I've tried. Lakland have managed to nail a really nice, growly, warm, consistent sound from their instruments. I was seriously considering switching to Laklands before I spotted my beat up Celinder Update J ('Ol No. 2).
would you say your more of an active guy CK?... -

dont be modest bro..For me simple grooves are where the best bass playing is played...i see so many gospel players that make me feel inadequate, but as you know, the beauty of electric bass is in its simplicity, in the context of a song... i personally think Fender will make ground financially just by the look of the new deluxe range, although if the preamp isnt cooking, the masses will buy one then put in Low End, Aguilar, JE pre's .... i agree JTUK, my Sei J5 is superb and surely awsome....why i put it for trade i dont know..the feel of the instrument is something else...silky smooth J bass..just gotta get it out of a studio.. -
thanks for posting..sounds as good as it looks..i got gas for that bass

What do you want from your Fender clones?
bubinga5 replied to karlthebassist's topic in Bass Guitars
Surely that specialness comes from the player.there only instruments for a purpose.. no matter what you got....tis always great to be unique i know.. i used to think that i wouldnt own a Fender for that reason but i played one and fell in love with the sound. i turned up with the Sei J at a rehearsal ive been going to and they wanted the Fender back..better for there sound i guess.. -

yes lets see what the new deluxe preamp is like..if it aint its a shame but cats will swap them out for better anyway.....they should do a limited run of sexy tops to shake things up IMO...they could steal sooooo much of the market if they just got exciting!! they just dont seem to look at bass guitar making like the other clones...but maybe thats the point.. i would hate to see Fender loose that vibe they have...and feel they want to retain that to a degree also seems to me that Fender Japan are way more exciting in the colour etc dep -
ok these arent mine damn them!! but oh i love em...the sunburst Vintage is just jaw dropping!!!!!

Usually the pre amp, although Fender clones arent always active... also the quality of Celinder's etc are usually far superior to a Fender..(not that i care that much)...My Fender Jazz kicks ass and is built very well, but it is a Custom Shop.. They maybe offer a bit more than a Fender in different aspects of the instrument, but do you need it....thats personal... you only have to look at a vid of Sharay Reed playing a Fender 5 to see! -
the only solo album's i buy...his playing is superb although any solo bass album can be a little predictable...prefer his side man stuff with Meshell, Chaka Khan etc.... Tom Jenkinson is V clever

Yeah witnesed that on TB once...
Just looked at his biog - basically he has done virtually every film session going in LA! As you were... Yep, b5 - I've been a big fan of mr 'knightmayorz', from the youtube clip on your first post. Absolutely effortless playing, never a note out of place. Don't know how he does it.
Jonny, cool you play horn's..would love to...you just cannot beat a good horn section...tis like a brass section on steroids!!
The music starts at just over 4 mins if you don't want to listen to the interviews. The amazing thing for me is their sense of time...it's so perfect. Also, I really think Vic excels here. I can't imagine this working without his impeccable technique and groove skills. It's not everybody's cup of tea, but I just wanted to show an example of how powerful and versatile the bass can be.
yeah the timing is what i find so astonishing ...perfection from 30 years of playing!!
I have to say that religion is re-heally not my thing, but that's besides the point here -- I love the music, I love the atmosphere and I'd love to play in a band like that! It looks how being a musician should be! Fantastic stuff, love it!
i have my own personal feeling's about religion...but that aside, i think its the religion and there faith that makes the music so good...the power of gospel blows me away more than most music i listen to..
-
that was great...was great to hear Clark's opinions on various things..i really dont buy the fret w***ery thing Pete..what i mean is if its done well i love listening to it.. period...guitarist do it and its ok..this is what makes the electric bass so versatile...much more so than the guitar. i may be shot for saying this and i did enjoy it and it did work very well... but i cant help thinking there are to many basses playing...and im not sure if it would work as an album i would enjoy listening to like others i have....very very clever though.. the playing is undeniably phenomenal...Marcus all the way for me, just dig his style and he plays the best bass IMO ...!!
-
i like buying second hand...new basses are going to get dings etc..dings just dont bother me when there there already, the bass is for playing not to look at...i would hate to have (i say hate but) a brand new Alleva or Ritter...i would worry too much... i use dunlop polish and a fretboard cleaner...the basses are always out lets face it relics arent suppose to fool you, there to tell the audience you have been on the road for 20 years..i dont mind em,wouldnt buy one because of it... love the Nash's though
I think I was at that gig - did you get George Duke in between Perri & Anita? We had front row seats (the stage was 'in the round') and at one point Anita came right over to the front & blew a kiss at me - I nearly fainted!
Ha ha yeah that was it....how strange..think you were closer than me though damn you Barrie! tiny woman huge voice..
