If you've been playing for any amount of time or are any kind of decent musician you will know the Level 42's records are musically and technically superior to RHCH just by listening.
this is nonsense.... oldslapper is spot on....ive been playing bass for a long time and im a decent bas player..and i dont agree with that bold statement... you need to stand back from your love of L42 and see a bigger picture....im betting you just mean bass...do you play drums, guitar, etc...because for you to know if L42's music is far superior you would have to know these instruments inside out also... As a bass player you could say that MK is more technical (and although i love MK's playing) it doesnt make it better... Meshell Ndegeocello is not a technical player but for groove (which is vital) she could blow both of them away...but this is just my taste not fact!

This has got to be a joke...he says its a refin from back in 1964?...the price is stupid... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...B:WNAFP:GB:1123
Doesn't do anything for me. I'm not an upright player but on the second vid he can't swing for sh*t. To me it's just another Jaco Jazz clone, technical ability or not. His touch is heavy handed and he rakes almost everything going down the strings. And get away from that bridge pickup! To those that say they could never reach this standard, or couldn't hope to play that well - all he did was woodshed technique and licks. Anyone can do it if they put the practice in.
he would prob be horrified to hear that..like i said its only a vid, and possible just a section of his playing..hes prob a monster player otherwise.... ive seen Marlowe Dk do this sort of messing/noodling...says it all -
+1 He's a really good bassist, who in a band/live context would (hopefully) be great, the 'musical content' of this vid is a bit disembodied as he's neither playing a tune as a solo piece or over some form of backing - his lines are extremely well executed and his slap and tap are solid... but since when does playing 'triplets' make anyone a dickhead?
Playing triplets in themselves doesnt make anyone a dickhead, but overdoing them does...IMO any flashy technique over played is not in the interest of the listener...i can play triplets in slap or finger, but in a song or bass line i would prob play one once,.. if that..its a feature... like i said this guy is prob different in a band situation and holds down the groove like mofo, and its only a vid, its not his whole musical repertoire... there are many ways of looking at bass playing and music, IMHO.. two of which i seem to disagree/agree with..the former is someone who see's bass playing as his/her platform to show what he/she can do..nowt wrong with it, we all like to show off what we can do. but lets see if you have a musical sensibility.. The latter is someone who is a little shy.. (no not there personality) they are very capable of runs and awsome slap but will only let it out when really needed...when you only hear a wicked phrase, run or triplet once, it makes it so much more special IMO.. i feel so much more respect from this type of player.. people like Victor Wooten are both of these...especially Marcus Miller...trouble is we dont get to hear or see it much excuse the waffle just my mind spilling out on Mac.. -
I hear you..i bought a Ray 5 from Marthebass..this bass was a stonker and i wish i hadnt have sold it....He sent the bass which was immaculate for what i paid, it really was like brand new. he packed it superbly ..A new set of Slinky's, and a really nice letter...Wonderful...!! you dont get that from the gallery.. every BC'er ive bought from has been great... After three years on BC i cant say how nice the people are on here...well they are bassist's
I can't believe this thread has run to 8 pages!!!
Not the first and wont be the last.... its like arguing that my girlfriend is better looking than your girlfriend......it purely subjective no matter how technically superior, one is to the other..technical ability doesnt mean musical ability.. My personal opinion is Flea is overated but thats not his fault....ive listened to more of his playing and hes very good but different to MK.....Mark King unfortunatley may be a little out of fashion and i think his rep as a slapper hasnt done him any favours.....His slapping is formidible though and his fingerstyle (IMO) is wonderful.... There both good in there own style and music...Neither is better than the other.. Competition doesnt belong in music..it all about sharing
I've always liked the look of em - I remember seeing a purple one with a dark fretboard (can't remember wood) and it was one of the most lovely looking things I'd ever seen. Though I have heard about the thin finish. This been addressed yet?
Oh how i like that cat in your picture..bloody funny
I don't like the way people assume low notes to be a strictly "heavy metal" thing. In fact the idea of lower notes has existed in genres such as jazz and funk for a long time before it was thought of in metal music. I've heard about doing this. It's a nice idea if you don't generally use the lower notes. However, i not only use the lower notes frequently, but i have actually done exactly the opposite with my 5 string, well in a way. I got some heavier strings and strung it ADGCF because that way i can use the extra Bb and A notes. In fact, if i want i can actually tune the A down to G, although i do have to adjust the neck in that case. I've recently started playing bass with the minimum use of open notes, because as some of you may know i was thinking of joining a cover band and i figure if i can play songs in this manner then it offers several advantages, namely not having to adjust tunings, being able to learn songs more quickly and also being able to simply adjust the position of the notes should the key of the song be adjusted at any point.
your right...there is not alot of modern soul funk gospel without a low B....for me the low B is essential in the sound of a 5 string...IMHO why would you want to lose the low down bass power for high notes?? your a bass player not a guitarist..

He's got good technique, but his problem is he doesn't seem to have any musical ideas. spot on..im thinking though that under the showcase he is good bass player...but stop the techniques and play the groove.. -
Ok i get bass GAS from time to time...well ok most of the time..but by steady counselling ive got it under control... .anyway by and large im happy with the basses i have, they fit me like a glove now, although i am saving for something really special from the world of Nordstrand.. But i just dont get the Amp/rig GAS thing...i played my old Ostinato through an Aguilar 500sc and 212 cab and loved it...my amp and cab is the same i have had for a long time, and i love Aguilar stuff.the warmth is lovely...and to be honest i havent tried much else apart from a HUGE Trace Elliot amp and cab in a pub....am i missing something? i feel i know quite alot about instruments and i know what i want, but when it comes to amplification im a bit naive Maybe my ear isnt that fussy or maybe i need to check out some other gear..ive heard great things about Mark Bass and Bergantino...but does my wallet need more GAS...i think not.. maybe i got lucky and bought right for my ear first time... also with the U Retro on the Sei there is so much i can dial in its just silly any thoughts on what im missing
-
Chris you got the same rig as mine and it kicks asss...lovely warmth and punch.....is Bergantino THAT good?
-
No...but its one bass i do really want to try...ive heard they are very versatile, but some say are a little polite..ive heard a few and i cant see it..real growl... i dont usually like blue basses but that is just!! this one does it for me...very expensive new but would like to get good used one.. WOW i wonder if George has sorted the thin finishes that wore quite quickly on previous basses..

he he i wish i could here you say that, i do love the scot accent..do you mean the avatar? its Erykah Badu
No doubt he's a player and all that and I'm sure we can all noodle to a certain degree, but what does it sound like with some chordal accompaniment, that's when it will make sense and also where the musicality will shine.
+1..im sure this is a showcase for his talent, and im sure he would slow down with music behind him -

some of it was great from 1.00 to 1.30 ish...but some was just pointless scale runs and chords...didnt like the slapping..too many stupid triplets..i cant stand bassists that over do triplets......just stop it!!!!
