More or less what they said. Work out the chords yourself but also see if you can hum a bass part along to each tune that really works.
Humming thats a good one...i often do that, but never thought of putting it together as a bass line....sems the most natural thing to do..

Slap bass is a technique like any other...im not a big believer that it should overtake someones playing...its an aggressive style that can be used to accentuate a line or passage, depending on your touch... but IMHO although i love MM, it is a technique that should be used wisely..Marcus Miller happens to do it very musically, unlike other pointless ego maniacs who do it for there own gain and showboating....thats the worst kind of bass player
Point taken - but is that 'something special' worth that thousands of pounds price tag?
I think so, but it opens up the world of GAS, and its dark world of temptation and human deprevation... try the forbidden fruit and thee shall see..

this really is a subjective thing...the phrase 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' is also true for bass tone... the tone of my Sei is not a placebo, but its only my opinion that it sounds good...... i also loved a fender 24 that i had which was a lower priced bass..its how you play it....for want of a better word budget or lower priced instruments can give sooo much if your happy thats cool!!

Just a quick Q.. I have recently joined a band..the guitarist/vocalist doesnt know his theory...now i usually work around a chord structure, but this guy doesnt know his chord names..and i dont play the Git..ar.i could work them out on piano but it will take too long... he has given me 20 original songs to learn but ive got to do it by ear..now this is not a problem but i much prefer to know what chord structure or progression i have to work with im curious to know what you guys/girls would do in this situation...im not one for sticking with roots(unless its required) as i feel you can give the song some better support knowing the chords... any ideas?
Hey peeps I know this thread doesn't get updated much - but when it does... Just check this new arrival out - I'm sorry I don't know the owner though I did see this bass in production, but this is what Seis are all about - sheer jaw dropping craftsmanship and attention to detail - and they sound and play amazong too: That thing is sick... I hoped I wouldn't see another Sei that would make me think about getting another - fact is I simply can't afford it - Martin and John strike again... And here's a vid of some Sei Single cut noodling I made recently Cheers guys Mike
That i possibly the most stunninglt detailed bass ive ever seen...he really is a master..
meh. for the sake of not being an anti-social prick I have really tried and tried to listen to stuff like this, but by the end I always feel unmoved and uninspired. I then look to stuff like this in complete awe: the dynamics of the drums, the way the bass is completely locked in and the way everyone's feeling what they play really does move and inspire me. and that's only a video I found the other day.. I know stuff like that isn't appreciated by the masses, but I listened to stuff like that before I started studying music and it really ponders the question why other people won't spend some time to appreciate what these guys are doing compared to people like Britney. over producing music like that just takes anyway any "life" the music had, and to me just sounds as dull as the drone of a refrigerator. sorry for the angry tone, just giving my honest opinion.
WOW, that bass playing was immense..love the honk too... do you know who the bassist is DP?
I would say Ray Charles has gotta be in there somewhere. Zappa I have no problem with. Another I'd say has to be getting pretty close is John Paul Jones. I also hate to say it, 'cos I've hated much of his stuff (although I've grudgingly actually quite liked a couple of others), but another is Gary Barlow. And right out of left field, for me a vote goes to Mark E. Smith.
sorry but i know i said genius is in the eye of the beholder but 'Gary Barlow'???? this is getting silly..how far can you travel from the word.. i may add i do like some of his songs...
true.., but most of your other suggestions were groups of people rather than individuals, and as for shakin' stevens, well you must know something i don't.
i dont think Pete specified single artists or groups..most of which were single artists anyways...ok i was jesting with SS..
