I think you can teach it to a point. It's easy to teach the notes and the rhythms, the problem comes with the interpretation. If you've never at least listened to a style it is unlikely that you will be able to cop the feel,at least initially. It's the same with any style.
This is true Doddy...i was rubbish at Reggae playing...dont listen to it and it doesnt inspire me...still like it though..
Space is important. I hear kids play at warp speed and am tempted to say: 'Try that at half speed.' I think that's where Marcus excels - he can groove at a slow(er) tempo. Playing a slow funk groove is difficult.
i agree with this totally Pete..nothing worse than funk too fast!! that and a bassist with a Burberry cap on..

it can be taught but there are certain aspects of touch, and dynamics that come naturally to a funk style of playing and a good funk bassist...that cant be taught..IMO
Damn, computer only working on one speaker and sound reproduction is awful - sounds like it could be something special. Thanks once again B for all your great posts.
Ive been waiting for this new album...they always come through for me...the usual slick jazz soul, and great production...they got Chaka on board too. there is a track called "Everything that we are" on the album and its f***ing amazing...tis what i love about Incognito.. Boz Scaggs's classic with Mario Biondi and Chaka Khan...this is a gem.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mcV5JWrO5Q Tis very Cog this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7OGzkYNZwM dont get me wrong i love incognito..but sometimes i wish there was something more...still love it..reminds me of living in Kensington in the summer.. cant beat em with Chaka too!!!!!!!! by the way the album is called Transatlantic RPM..
Seen Billy last year, along with Hadrien Feraud.. Wasn't gobsmacked by Billie's stuff, but, Hadrien.. He was a few steps higher, than other musos on the stage..
to be honest im really not keen on Hadrian Feraud...the stuff ive seen is of his is noodle city...especially the Gospelchops DVD...what he was doing on there i will never know..maybe i havent seen the best of him
-
Hitchy, every one will say what they like... but what sort of tone are you looking for?? vintage, modern,? do you want silent pups, single coils.. unless we know, we cant help..
Resurrecting a thread that hasn't been updated since April with a video I recorded last night? Well that's what I've just done. It was good practice for alleviating my 'red light syndrome', but I still can't seem to shake the nerves and really get into it till the outro. Oh yeah, in case you can't tell I'm so into Louis 'Thunder Thumbs' Johnson right now.
Respect to you Huwberry...that was solid bass playing...love the tune and you did it justice...that slap was SPOT ON!!! what a tone from that SR4
