I recommend Rufus Reid's The Evolving Bassist as it starts you off reading open strings on minims and takes you from there The secret of learning to read is to learn where the notes are on the stave, learn to read rhythms and the JUST DO IT - again and again and again and again and again....... It is a skill you develop by endless repetition. There are loads of transcriptions on here (look under Theory and Technique) and on the net so no excuses. Start simple and build otherwise you will get frustrated (although frustration goes with the territory in this case)
Bilbo (or anyone else) do you find its a skill you have to keep up all the time to keep sharp?

im not a total newbie when it comes to the language of music., just want a site that i can progress in a steady way...also it would be nice to have notation to (some) music and also have the ability to play the song also?
-
Ok im going to learn to read..i should have started years ago but oh well...ive decide i want to take my playing to more of a pro level and maybe get paid for it... Im going to teach myself(i guess this is a no brainer??) so does anyone have any tips, websites that i can tap into...where is the best place to get bass clef notation, from simple stuff to maybe more advanced..there is an article in BGM about it but its on lesson 13 so ive erm...missed a few lessons..any ideas, tips, thoughts?? thankyou..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs18E0SWHm8 was funny the guy who was on the guitar (who was superb) was playing a Squire strat..

maybe this should be in theory and teq...but i was just wondering how many of us play slap but.. in a musical way?..i often just thumb my way through George Benson's "Shiver"( anyone know this killer 80s track)???? and let the notes ring with the tone rolled off on the JB.. and other tracks that are soo not slap... slap doesnt have to be about a regimented rock, funk, pop, line. but....in my humble opinion thats what some miss from what slap can be...im not saying thats whats slap and pop is all about, but its a good perspective of good slap playing.. i love L42 and MM but the best slap ive ever heard is in the context of a great tune that doesnt involve erm...slap..or at least the hearing point of the music..see below!! i like to thumb, what i would play fingerstyle..IMHO forget strict slap lines from books vids...its a great way to get your dexterity but it dont train your musical mind... its fantastic practice for a musical way of slapping...imo the best way to approach it sometimes..just think of it a fingerstyle but with more attack.. im sorry if im being very music specific when im explaining this but its transferable for sure... a fantastic example of this is Randy "Hope" Taylor's playing on this track from a very Bluey "Inner Shade" album...OK he pops, but most of its thumb..the track is smokin...very musical..he thumbs his way through some amazing lines.... like i said im sure as hell you guys/girls are on top of this and got a heel on me excuse my arrogance.. ..just my thoughts see... Check out Randy Taylor on this killer track with Chris Ballin vocals...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ytQLBqIHak

when jimi hendrix plays and when someone playing hendrix, is very different....thats the difference...thats not true funk... but thats enough for me to notice..

Have you ever gone from a super amazing active bass....then played a passive bass and been underwelmed... i get this when i play the Sei then switch to the Fender... then i come round and realise with a bit of tweaking how good a jazz bass can be!!...why is a passive jazz bass so much better than active electronics can seem to muster...??(i dont have the redeemer circuit anymore) dont get me wrong i love the sound of the Sei jazz...but when a Fender jazz does its thing, there is nothing that can touch it.!!!!!! nothing cuts through...no where near.!! apart from a p bass...but it different. ..i play the jazz and think, no wonder this is a classic, there are so many clones, its such a masterpiece of musical instrument design...i got a lot of love for a good P Bass aswell..i played an old 72 of my sisters husbands and it blew my socks off...amazing tone with the Labella flats on... i think in my old age i love a passive instrument, but as long as its good one.. excuse my waffle i got a bit to get off my chest tonight..
No matter how good the bass solo, they always fill me with a sense of indifference!
there must be a solo that brings you out of that middle ground?
-
Im with HJ on this..new gear is not the answer.. you got to ask yourself why you feel your in a rut...i doubt its because you dont like the instrument anymore...you need some inspiration from some source...it may be a new direction in your practice, a new band, focus on something you cant play... i started to learn the piano, and my perspective of electric bass has changed...its made me excited about the instrument again, like i had when i first started playing.. there are so many avenues to take to refresh your interest in bass..you just have to look...

i think a great test is show some one a funk bass line..ok they could prob play it note for note, and get the feel bang on... then there is funk playing where you have to improvise... thats different....
I still think you can teach "feel". Anyone seen Gareth Malone in his various BBC programmes teaching a bunch of no hopers to sing Opera? To me there's as much "feel" in that as there is in Funk. Sure, it's not all in the dots, but I think it is all about inspiring and coaching. It's not that some people were born with it and some not.
some people were born with a certain touch...im so sure of this!!
