1. Ok i was thinking about this as soon as i got up this morning, ok its been on my mind for many years...but seriously , about jazz basses... as we know there are so many copies of the original jazz bass, prob more than any other bass...seems to me the line has been blurred for a long time...i see so many so called jazz basses with MM pickups, soap bar pickups, Pbass width necks, 7 string jazz basses, a multitude of preamp options, rear routed.. im not saying i dont love all of these options... so IYO what makes a jazz bass a jazz bass...has it come down to just the shape...then again ive seen a non jazz bass shape with JJ pickups called a jazz bass...ive heard jazz basses that dont sound anything like a jazz bass...they got the shape the jj pickups but no growl, snap, cutting punch... what is the jazz bass? no matter how many innovations that have brilliantly been brought to the instrument, is a true jazz bass still a Fender
2.
I don't know about that, because when I played an NYC bass it was privately owned. I suppose a large part of my disappointment was that I was sitting down with a "Sadowsky", a name that has some much weight attached. And at the end of the day, when it's just a jazz bass and not a particularly outstanding one at that, you're bound to be left feeling disapppointed. I like jazz basses just as much as the next bloke, but for the same cash you could have a Sei or a Wal!
This may have been because you just didnt like the feel of a Sadowsky...that doesnt mean anything, apart from you didnt like it...doesnt mean that Sadowsky doesnt carry much weight...Ok you may be able to get a Sei or a Wal for the same money but i f you dont like those two there prob gonna feel rubbish in your eyes also.. Jazzes are so different from one maker to the next..To me my Fender CS is the best jazz bass ive played but it dont mean nothing to anyone else... i am also confused as to why you can get a Skyline for so much less than you can get a Metro...i know what i would buy...
3. Bump...would trade for Lakland 55-01/02

7. i should have put this in Petes thread but i forgot.. yes anoher of B5's music thread..this is worth the watch though i promise... this is one of my all time favorite jazz funk bands since i was very young...Johann's bass playing, aswell as the rest of the band, is so spot on...that Sadowsky sounds immense!! you couldnt get a rizla paper in between there groove... check out the drummer playing on Johann's bass...and the expressions on Johann's face...very funny.... awsome groove.... for me the bass playing is perfect.. there like Incognito and Fourplay mixed??!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc4oPqmCbFA More Mezzo!! 10.
I can highly recommend the dingwall super J. Here is a pic of the bass just to demonstrate that it looks good too!
thats one bass i would love to check out...
11. Mate its up to you but i would def give it longer...you got to give your hands and mind, time to get used to that extra string...Rome wasnt built in a day...good luck with sale though
12. think you need to sort your pics out matey....
13. WOW just WOW!!!!
14. I dont care for loads of technique..i can play it but i dont feel i want to... i do love good note choices and feel.... i do love some of the amazing things that people do on bass but...my question is.....do you prefer alota feel for someone who just blows you away technically ....or what would you prefer, a total groove from someone who ( i feel ) is playing in the groove..( keep in mind im talking about these vids) and doing the finger style thing??? my judgment is in my avatar.. i cant get away from the fact that Meshell's groove is so much better...but different.....maybe i just said it? Tamas Barabas...FCleff 5 string http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nMrTj6o_6Q Meshell Ndegocello..Sonic Tonic.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VeqnL9IO-0 im always interested in the opinions from you guy/girls on BC so i would like your opinion, on the difference between the two styles....
15.
Lakland DJ with EMG's I assume... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or8M3C6GuCs...feature=related
Blimey reverb city.... i dont know Victors playing enough to comment...are you saying his licks are from V's or just his bass/body language Pete?
16.
Playing some V Wooten and Jacoish licks? Doesn't do it for me..
Hes spotlighting, everyone pulls out a lick from someone else now and again, thats how we all learn, and an off the cuff occasion like that, i dont see no wrong.....i cant see anything wrong with his playing, apart from hes messing around...?
17. this is nice..smokin basses.... has GR stopped production??
18. i would say your talking to the right man to advise you if you want J Shuker to build you a bass, he will know what pickups you need to achieve the sound you want.... why not just ask him, thats what your paying him for....the guy knows his sh*t like the best in the world... IMO there are too many options to choose from unless you have tried them all in lots of basses like a luthier has..
19. take it they are custom basses Tino??...any idea where from...i love these unknown luthiers/company's...im a nerd like that.. where is your info from?
20. im not one for hating basses because i can get used to most and personally wouldnt want to offend ... but could imagine, in only but one way i may like this bass..is the tone.....the rest i would poss not get on with..... looks, string capacity, looks, weight, and the fact that it looks like something Merlin played and then traded it to King Arthur, then he couldnt get on with it and traded it to Gollum..he couldnt get on with it for obvious reasons.. imagine taking this to a rehearsal... i guess its a studio or showroom piece...
21.
TBH, I'm a bit tired of the counter arguments that go "Everyone's different, we all have opinions, if we were all the same it would be boring", yadayadayada. What's wrong with healthy disagreement and slagging of some stuff.
Ha..i didnt mean to pull 2 posts of yours silddx but i was looking through and that did make me laugh...!
22.
Anything with more than four strings, big ugly single cuts, any Burns bass. And someone mentioned the Warwick Nobby Headless - it is indeed one of the most ridiculous looking things in the world. EDIT: I forgot Pedulla, a horrible, horrible cartoon of a bass design.
+1 i agree with all of these apart from the pedulla...incredible fretless...
23. Nice playing from Uriah Duffy from Whitesnake on a stock Fender jazz..dont suppose he plays like this in that band?? good god that jazz sounds nice... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aImxqgMzbg
