1.
='ambient' But for something to be perfect, which is highly subjective anyway, you have t realise that you may be wrong MB1. I agree the more money you throw at something doesn't necessarily make it better I often think the Steelys still haven't found what they're looking for though? ...When was the last time you saw them smiling?
i reckon there very comfortable. the thing is with Steely Dan they were never a band you could put a label on because they crossed musicals genres. that maybe gives people the impression that there not a grounded band. for me i love Donald's dry sense of humour. you only have to listen to some of there lyrics to get how much humour they have.
2.
There are some writers out there that virtually hear the completed song in their head, and if what they are actually hearing doesn't sound like that, then, to them it sounds wrong. Don't know if that is the case with SD, but it's their baby, they call the shots. If I've heard about SD's reputation, you can be sure all the US session guys know about it. In which case, if you don't like it, don't take the gig. IAC Their reputation, and how a record was made, really shouldn't make any difference to anyon'e enjoyment of the end product.
yeah for sure.Prince is one of them. i dont think there is any excuse for arrogance, but im sure Donald and Walter wouldnt mean any bad feelings. ive seen an interview with Donald and he says he digs the slap line that Chuck played. was very recent. anyway what they say goes, wether it be right or wrong. lets face it they have the proof that what they do works.
3. why did you think they were dicks? just interested.
4. Does anyone else play.? i had an old Yamaha M06 and too be honest it wasnt for me. went out and tried this and it is superb. its a Yamaha P35b. the weighted keys are very close to the real thing. and Yamaha's grand piano sounds are really great. The Rhodes is nice, can also use it as a controller board. 88 Keys, 10 voices, reverb and other effects, nice and simple. and came witha really posh stand unit and padded bag. what i really wanted was a Nord but i canny afford it
5. thanks for that. seems a shame they dont use the 'bit of 2 by 4' as the neck, suspending the body for painting. Fender just dont get the fact that bassists like to take the pick guard off.
6. seems strange that MIJ Fender Jazz bodies have no routing at all. i just think its something to do with the tooling a certain factory is using.? interested to find out though
7. Yeah im lost too. i know one thing. identification is not why they have holes.
8. imo, this is one of the best Chic productions they ever did. Bernard on bass, his bass playing is fantastic on this record. really great groove playing. Nile on guitar. its a cracker with Fonzi Thornton on vocals. not very well known, but a really cool record. this sort of stuff gets me up in the morning
9. pitty i couldnt find Peg because its a cracker. but Josie is a good one. the drum solo is of the wall.not sure if its Peter Erskine or Dennis Chambers. ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTA3fXbCpYw
10. Alot of live Steely Dan live albums i dont care for. but Alive in America is a cracker. was listening to it today, the playing and general sound is fantastic. Tom's bass playing is always on the money. the all Sax horn section on this track is fantastic also. i love Walters vocals on The Book of Liars. such a great record.
11. Rotosound.. awful. last as long as a week. i will never buy another string but DR's.. expensive, but imo they are easily the best on the market.
12. these are cracking basses. more evidence that Japan is one of the worlds best bass makers.
13. you mention DJ Zebra.!!!! a favorite of mine, i think these 2 songs are seamlessly put together by DJ Zebra. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kMHL8PW-EM
14. cool to hear these thoughts. but im wondering if you actually watched the vid.? very confusing
15. i love this guy. he is a master of what he does. love to hear peoples thoughts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkffTM7vy6o
16. This guy smokes. just love his style, i saw him once in London playing for Incognito. his drumming style i really dig. here he is with some hip hop suspects.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_x1jfGM1BY hes played with Incognito, Omar, but this vid is great, sorry i posted this before. his great solo playing is at 5.50 onwards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izR1EbgZf7M
17. im now bored of there sound. i can hear some fantastic stuff in there covers, awsome technical ability, driven by a good song.. but this music doesnt do it for me. i think there showing there colours. thats not a bad thing. its just not for me. and for me, there is no soul or character in this record
18. i bet he talks of ghost notes.
19. that is cherry burst maybe?. its a stunner.!
20. shiver my pigging timbers.! that is fantastic. i thought my old Modulus J4 had a good quilt top, the finest quilted maple i have ever seen. best looking jazz bass on BC for a long time. i quiver in the corner thinking about how good that bass sounds.
21.
Willie Weeks on Bass i believe.....correct me if i'm wrong.....never the less Beautifull.
yes Willie Weeks on this live album. my opinions are subjective of course. there a great band on this album. "Little Ghetto Boy" is some of the best bass playing ive ever heard, not just from Willie but from any bassist ever. oh f*** it, here it is. his playing is just wonderfully musical.
22. For as long as i can remember Donny Hathaway's voice has been in my memory. i personally think as subjective as this subject is, he has the best voice ever to be recorded. he has power, control, subtlety, he never EVER, misses a note, or goes off key. pure perfection.. and this recording is live. to think this man threw himself out of a building and killed himself from depression.?
23. maybe not when you were a nipper Jack, but guys like the Who when they were that young, would smash them into oblivion. they are fantastic all the same.
