1. they turned Rufus's/ Chakas track into super cool soul imo. they had a serious amount of soul in there funk. you can hear Alans very tasteful slap playing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHf-fQUF9yk
2.
One of my favourite bands, seen them many times. Great basslines in their stuff, always economical but just 'right' for the song etc. 'If I ever lose this heaven', 'Work to do' and 'Atlantic Avenue' amongst some of my faves.
ive always loved Alans bass playing. super funky. super tight, just right.
3. i was playing this record loud in my house, my girlfriend is not really into funk but even she was boppin her head. always loved there music. i can safely say that they are up there with soul funk greats.. 4.
You mean because I should know already? It's certainly not obvious to me what makes him 'great'.
well i meant bass players generally, but of course. music is very subjective.
5.
Yeah of course! I'm just curious to see why bass players regard him so highly. I've met a lot of bass players who love his style.
i dont think you need to be curious to see why bass players regard Marcus Miller so highly. ? im no fan boy, but i think Marcus Miller gets caught up in the "hes just another slap bassist" but to me hes much more innovative than that. its not just his playing that is great, its all there to hear. i think hes gone past having a flawless sound and technique many years ago. its about his music. why cant people look past his slap.? there are lots of stuff hes played on that arent slap. there is so much stuff hes done over the years as a session bassist. even if you dont like his music, i cant see why anyone wouldnt at least acknowledge him as one of the greats. i dont like Elvis i still think he was great.
6. Yeah i really dug that album and im not really into solo bass albums. Jekyl and Hyde is a killer fingerstyle groove. a great allround productionm and some great music.. of course some of the bass playing is incredible.!
7. oh how different we are , i so dig Stuarts playing on that track, hes got a real groove but Mr X's fills and general traveling around the bass line is way more inventive, its alot more laid back as a track but man is the bass line more busy, in the best way. this is not taking anything away from Zenders bass line because its awsome, the difference is Stuarts bass line keeps me in the groove, Mr X's does that, but takes me on a journey. there is a huge difference for me.
8. Damn this is funky. awsome drumming from Phil Collins. he holds that down, with the amazing George Duke on keys. dont get much better funk than this.. not many vids do i see with these guys together...
9. love that song. great band.
10. this bass playing from mr X is just amazing.. i still think its Randy HOPE Taylor from Incognito. just sounds so much like him. im prob totally wrong mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRYVODHgKY0
11. good call Fionn. really classic stuff. i remember when i first heard Too Young to Die, was in a club in Cheltenham. naive as he was back then, him and his band made some killer records.. great drumming, great percussion, and some great bass playing from Stuart. hes a fantastic bassist. Mr X's bass playing on the 12' space cowboy is still way better than stuarts mind. just imo.
12. thankyou Dingus.! i so enjoyed that..
13. Love this record, the album is fantastic. the lyrics say it all. totally.!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mljFfAyWVL0&list=FLzVUqeF1SLjxa78y2gd03dQ&index=3
14. you gotta love this.. cant say i will ever love 2 basses playing at the same time but it these two I heard on the grapevine that Mark has been playing with Princes band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKIbcWEErrU
15. Im sure ive posted this before in the past but was reminded of it by a friend. so f*** it its great. A great musician who went solo from the band ToniToniTone, (i think i spelt that right) i have every album hes ever recorded and there all great. hes no virtuoso on the bass but hes a great musician from what ive heard. 6.00 mins in this track really is superb.! the vocals from the guy on the keys at the end are really really great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDsHJW5E1zk
16. They take the Fender design and make them better.
17.
I think it was nstarted as a kind of joke by a DJ, but turned into a bit of a riot. To be honest, amongst the really good stuff was some total dross.
as was any other genre Pete. when it was bad it was just like any other, when it was good it was epic dance music that will last forever.. For me Disco came from something amazing and turned into something amazing. it was just a blend of soul music. just someone put a stupid name on it. its like some idiot called Jazz Funk 'Acid Jazz' .. moron
18. i think Disco was hatted by rockers because Disco at the time was seen as a hedonistic lifestyle, and talking about "Good Times", at a time when America was financially in trouble. not for a second do i think that these rioters were knocking the talent that goes into some of the classic disco record, i think they were just pissed off, that times were hard and people were having a good one.
19. i dont say this lightly. but there is not much else i can say but, just wonderful. easily one of the most musical bass players alive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVab_CbwecE
20. ive owned a Sei 5 string jazz and they are really amazing. you have to play one to realise how special they feel. i so want another.!
21. one of the best keys man who has ever lived, as well as one of the best all round musicians. a true all rounder was George. im not going to be sad though because he left me so much amazing music to listen to.. i think thats the best way to look at him and his music.
22. im not knocking Wal basses but when i played one a few years ago, the tone was a very uninspiring thud. it was beautifully made but apart from that i really couldnt see the appeal from the tone. but the feel of the bass was amazing
23. They are killer basses, the necks are really nice. very versatile. good buy.
24. I was listening to some Steely Dan yesterday, there is so much material that is not so popular but. they really are one of those bands that always have some hidden magic. profound music that really stays with you. there is no way i cant tap my foot to this SD funk. there are so many more. i will never tire of these guys.
