STEINBERGER XL-5W ('Wide 5') RARER THAN A VERY RARE THING!
Stacker replied to lowregisterhead's topic in Basses For Sale
I once tried to sell my XL2 on basschat for silly low money (1200 I think?) and did not get a single breadcrumb of interest. Not one enquiry. It did surprise me as they do have such a good rep. They are amazing basses and I kick myself for finally selling mine through gumtree. Dub paradise! They look unique but feel and sound great...killer necks, loads of sustain and a pure warm tone that isn't 'graphitey' in a sterile way. Those fiver XL2s are also very rare indeed... But in the end basschat is by far the best place to buy and sell good basses from good people. given time someone might pop up but pricing is always going to be difficult for Steinies.
Gumtree? Can I ask you how much you let it go for, without being nosey? Well, I AM, actually! -
Agree with the above! The more I look at gear on here, the more I realise that I don't like or need ebay. It is just too open to corruption and manipulation. Yes, there can be some great deals, but they are becoming increasingly rare. It seems far more common now that people end up paying over the odds for poor stuff...
And don't forget the lies and disinformation going around. Won't apologise for being so neg about ebay but it is actually getting worse, guys. Anyway, these original XL units are pretty rare and I'm sure that if the OP sticks it out and keeps this item high profile (Talkbass, maybe?) he'll get the sale he wants. -
I did try posting on the Yahoo Steinberger group, but didn't get much of a response, and this from supposed Steinberger nuts. Perhaps I'm just destined to keep it for now...
Funny enough, I had the same thing with my 4001CS Yahoo group! That group started to get spammed by Russian tarts so I gave up. -
Yeah, I had another guy enquire by pm as to why the bass sounded so dark. I tend to roll off most of the tone knob to get that sound. The Nash is capable of lot of twang though! N
rear pup and tone off, yeh. Nice. Will b in my hands on Saturday.
Just received an e-mail about this jazz bass on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...3#ht_1911wt_941 Not sure if it is genuine or not - what do all you Fender experts think? Mark
ur link is to a Musicground auction? Mind u, they're well dodgy!

Ebay, for me, is getting more and more dodgy. with people breaking payment instructions, doing unwarranted chargebacks on PayPal (cos they've decided they don't like the item or had a spat with the seller) and maliciously getting auctions taken down. I'm seriosuly thinking about not using it for selling any longer. Shill bidding - as the Seppos call it - is becoming rife over here, too, and I've been on the end of that. Incidentally, when I finally got my old XL2A back in my hands via ebay, I noticed that the only guy that was bidding against me in the last few minutes turned out to be a guy would bought and sold mobile phones and software; not once did he buy a guitar or bass! Go figure! Anyway, I digress. Much better to have a forum like this to trade on. Have you also tried the Steinbgrger goup on Yahoo? ? -
I've had three of them and let them go very quickly thus I'm not a fan. Can't put my finger on it ('scuse intentional pun) but it may have something to do with the split-pup sound.
Hi, At the risk of "earning your undying hatred" - and casting an eye at your avatar - I think I'll just drool over the pictures on this one... Seriously though, what a beautiful bass. I just love that translucent finish. A combination of Tort s/plate and a bound-pearl neck in either r/wood or maple and Fender would sell truckloads. But then again its rarity is what sets it apart in the first place. Good luck with the sale - but then again you can't loose either way with that bass! All the best, Sean
I've got a Strat like that. Mary Kaye finish, I believe it's called. And, yeh, it has a tort plate - a really red one - that sets it off. Nice bass.

Anybody tried the Tokai version? Or the Dean Demonator?

Thanks for the Ashbory and I must say I've never seen an instrument packed with such care. Cheers, Owain!
Unlined is the way to go. Looks "uncluttered" AND requires a bit of graft to get the intonation right.... Both of which are virtuous!
+1 to that!
so whats a nice smooth bright 40,s bass string set, i also put a set of rotosound nickel on but found they where just like 45,s ( off fleebay again).. I HAV,NT played for a good few years and have put the old strings back on.. (1976 P.bass)....
Though I am a Roto man, I can recommend D'addario Pro Steels or Warwick Reds. I prefer steels; don't like the feel of nickel on a bass.

Elites are the worst strings I have ever played. Used them once back in the '90s and never again.
And here's a bit of the bass pure DI'd in the clip I put up when I sold it to Richardd. It has super thick tone, that's for sure - the neck isn't a slim one, maybe that's why it sounds better? Interesting... Cairo www.youtube.com/sharkpuss
Is that you playing Clarky's Nash, Cairo? Nice Jaco tones, mate! I didn't think those DiMArzios would sound like that!
Nice Blade B2 on t'Bay here........ Clickhere BB
That's a non-original Badass bridge. The original - whilst looking oure '80s - is fairly heavy duty and good for sustain so I can't imagin why there's a Badass on this.
I have this bass but a bit more battered and CAR. I've never seen another one. Bump for an awesome, rare jazz and a good price. Where did you get the plate from? I want a red tortie for mine
The tort that was on it was non-orig. I didn't like it and got the mint green one from off ebay from some crowd in Belgium,

Testing the water with this non-export Jap Jazz. Original finish with dot and bound neck and Fender-only logo. Black hardware (Hipshot lollipop tuners) and Wilkinson bridge with brass barrels. Mint green scratchplate. The hardware and 'guard are aftermarket, non-original. One thing that the Japs have done that shouldn't be there on a bass of that era is the grounding strip. A few surface sractches on the back and maybe one or two wee dings but no major dents. Anyway, this one came from Ishiibashi last year and these are pretty difficult to find. Importing a new one will cost you around £800, I reckon, and you can have this for a good bit less. Looking for £560 OVNO. Comes with gig bag.

The Blade, every time! You won't regret it! But, as Bob says, they're freakin' heavy. I sold one years ago and regretted it and bought another one as soon as I could.
