You've sold a bass to finance a new car? With me, over the years, it's been the other way about! I find myself picking the fretless fellas up more than the fretted guys. Practising intonation without looking at the fingerboard is something I find rather focussing.
-
Yeh, I know, William. I was just toying with the idea of a soft-v on this fella. It's a really good non Fender stacker Jazz but the neck profile is a bit too 'C' for me so if I was gonna take it back to vintage profile I was thinking about shaping a soft-v just for the hell of it.
-
So, I've got a really good relic'd Jazz but I'm not happy withe the profile; it's not period correct. Finally gonna re-shape it but then thought about a soft-V Jazz neck. Some of the '50s P-basses had both soft and hard V but on a Jazz? Any ideas before I get the scrapers out??

Fender 3-bolt neck and micro-tilt adjustment. Evil or genius?
Stacker replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
I used to detest the 3-bolt neck but the bolt at the apex of the plate is like a stove bolt and has its own threaded socket, therefore once the 'tilt' is setand the rear bolt re-tightened the contact will be stable. I have lost count of the times I've gotten a 2nd-hand bass and had to find the shim 'sweet spot' by trial and error, removing the neck several time in the process. From that point of view a tilt system has its benefits over 4-bolt. Interstingly, anyone want to comment about the 6-bolt neck? -

I can empathise with you: these small practice amps are usually underpowered and sound awful. My fav pet hate was a Trace Elliot Boxer which I encountered in a rehearsal room years ago. We could not get our usual room and were offered another, in which lay this POS. TE shoulda renamed it the 'Boxy', cos that's what it sounded like: a wooly, wooden sound and any use of volume would make the thing rattle like mad. You mention financial restraint but if I were you I'd get rid of that thing right now and wait until you can afford something decent.
Used Roto's for the first few years of playing. They sound pretty good, but I stopped using them because the brightness fell off very quickly.
Same here - though I used 'em for decades - and I switched to Warwick Reds around four years back. The RS66 has, purportedly, been improved upon to keep the zing but I've yet to experience this. I tried that .030-.090 Funkmaster set back in the mid '80s and found them useless in that they were waay too light and gave no definition whatsoever. I went back to .035s and, eventually, up to .040-.095 where I have stayed to this day. I know this is a cliche, but I liked their earlier stuff, up to and including (parts of) True Colours. Anythign after that, i can't handle. Saw 'em on the World Machine tour with a (literally) blinding lightshow and knew I was over 'em. Wish MK all the best, though. Like him or not, he did push slap-bass into the mainstream. Unfortunately, that also included muso shops on a Saturday affy.

LEFTY JAZZ BASS 1960 FOR 65 000 dollars...what do you think?
Stacker replied to rocker19's topic in Bass Guitars
Look at the 'board and the fret ends. Wouldn't you expect to see some shrinkage in the 'board edges over the decades? And the rear pup cover is hiding the rear pup: that pup should be partially in view. Maybe the cover holes were drilled to far fwd. Maybe I'm just being cynical and skeptical, which you have to be when considering instruments of such vintage. It's nice, but $65K? -

Yep, had Clarky/Cairobill's red fella and that was a beauty. The 2-tone I sold to Pete on here had a slimmer neck but identical sounds, prob cos of the DiMArzios and a good neck/body contact. Can't fault 'em myself, other than mabe the retail price.

Don't hit thgigging high spots any more but try the Cafe Royal (West Register Street, opposite the Balmoral Hotel) and the Bow Bar on Victoria Street, off George IV Bridge.

+1 to Stevo's shop. And Deano at DM might be able to help,. -
I have to admire your skill, here. I would have left that Badass out, but that's just me. The finish is stunning and you shoulda matched it on the headstock! Kudos!

Overwater owners. Is this truss rod broken? (Photo included)

How on earth has that become sheared? The 'board is gonna have to come off. -

They're good basses, not great, and have their unique sound, whether with flats or rounds. I always played them with a pick, resting on the horsie and playing above the front pup. Their QC is pants and they are overpriced. Try getting a Jap copy, first.
