1.
They don't sound right either!
Neither does the Firebird! What is Gibson playing at? I recently bought a red Firebird VII, knowing that the pups were way overwound compared to the '60s models. Does not make sense, reissuing kit if they're not gonna do it right.
2. Yeh, some guy, Holger: the Jazz bass and the white gloves! Started getting into them a few years back watching YouTube footage. FAL gear - jeez, I remember them when I was young. Loadsa bands seem to have at least one of them (amp head) with some equally non-descript cab. You never saw them in 'real' muso shops but often in those that sold crappy DJ gear and disco-truss!
3. Yeh, the resistors, in the original circuit, prevented tonal loss on one pup affecting the other. Plus, there's an output drop. This is the main reason that Jaco converted his original Jazz to VVT and also why the '62 RI did away with them as well. Matter of fact, I bought a set of Luxe resistors last year and meant to fit 'em to one my old Stackers. Will give it a go and post back at some point.
4.
OHMs law ? I have a degree in Murphys law.
Beamish, for me, though you hardly see it this side of Dublin.
5.
Well then Breman educate me on why I can't hear the difference between a pot at 634K and one at 250K but can if I turn a pot down? Tell me why wire, the thing that carries the electric that comes in all sorts of different specifications has absolutely no bearing on the current that goes through it? But yet as we all know the higher the resistance the harder it is for the electric to flow through it. But that doesn't make a difference does it?
Just leave it, man. He's got a Law degree to do........
6. This is starting to become like the Hartley Peavey/Aspen Pitman BS session on valves back in the early '90s..... Seriously, guys. At the end of the day, listen to your ears. If you don't, some **** is taking up your time and making money out of it! Cyaz.
7.
did you watch the vid ou7shined linked to?
No. Whilst I appreciate his posting the vid, my life is too short. Waay too short! Man, this new Firebird I've just bought sounds great!
8. Popular T-shirt seen in Edinburgh a few years ago....
9. I avoid it like the plague. Only ever relented to get dragged to see Johnny Vegas (early days) and Guy Pratt. Saw the latter twice: first time - great fun, entertaining with a touch of bass playing; second time - sh*t.
10. Gentlemen!! I said I wouldn't post again on this contentious topic but aren't we forgetting something? Our EARS! They are enough: they are what makes us choose between a Rick, a Fender Jazz, a Precision or an Alembic. And what we choose to shove them through, pedal-wise, rack-wise, amp-wise. You like what you hear and you can tell everyone else to go to Hell!
11. Ok, those were the only parts of my argument on this topic so I'll bow out and just observe. Good discussion!
12.
Highly pertinent, good man that Ethan. Also: the quality of wire between pickup and jack does NOT have an effect on the sound (unless you know you've replaced 'inferior' wire with 'superior' wire). I believe there's a $1000000 dollar prize for anyone that can prove it does. Been on offer for years now and no-one's dared claim it.
Perhaps I should have said 'gauge' rather than quality. Surely there's a contributing factor?
13. My tuppenth worth, here: the quality of the hook-up wire used between pots and the quality of the solder (and soldering technique) used are significant contributing factors to how a harness performs.
14. Bump for my fav type of bass. Great price, too!
15.
sorry for being an idiot... but why does it matter what it will be worth? You will never be able to prove more than hearsay what it is or isn't- it may be a fender- it may not be. So that given- what matters is what the thing is like to play, is it a amazing bass? is it worth 800 or more even now? If it is then why not get it and get something special at a good price. But it would be fraudulent to buy, refinish and sell as an original and you don't have a clue- so the question is- if I got this, and refinished it would Bass + refinish < sale price if I wanted to move it on? For info there was a jazz that a guy sold on here last year that he sold as a bitsa with possibly some old fender parts on it. Dead honest, and it looked like it possibly was real old parts- but again couldn't prove more than he had a good jazz bass. I think it went for £550 or so
Proving a Fender is '60s Fender is getting harder and harder, these days, even if the pups n pots seem to be correct. I'd reckon a '63 to go for upwards of £5k and even then basses from that era seems to have components altered/replaced. Also, since the emergence of Nash, etc, a good repairman (or luthier) can knock up a vintage piece if he takes his time. Now, is this the bass Luke is talking about or is it a genuine '60-'61 Fender Jazz Bass??
16.
Rick Astley looks like Jedward's dad.
No, Max Bygraves!
17. Who is/was les nemes? What is the point of this thread?
18. I recall JJB being interviewed about 'the Barracuda bass sound'. He also said that a lot of it had to do with that green-glo P-bass and how, looking for a back-up, he'd tried dozens before he found one that sounded close to it.. Must go visit Rattus Norvegicus just to here that tone as I remember it!
19. Ok, coupling aside, I'd still stand by my guess that what they OP is experiencing is due to his proximity to his rig. In part.
20. Yes, i know that. But where am I #completely wrong'?
21. So, if physics is not involved, what is? Hocus-pocus? Magic? You made a statement that I was 'cmpletely wrong' so explain yourself.
22. come on....
23.
No it isn't. You're completely wrong.
Really? I'm always willing to learn, so why don't you explain where I'm 'completely wrong'? looks like physics to me.
24.
Truly weird science!
Yeh, isn't it? Physics, to be pricise.
